09:54 kai rbuels: I actually think javascript is pretty neat for a language made up in like two weeks
09:54 kai it's just that usually web designers write stuff in it, not programmers
09:55 kai that really can ruin your reputation as a language..
09:55 kai *cough*PHP*cough*
09:56 kai I'm pretty sure a well-designed BioJS library would be great to build web-apps

13:42 rbuels jhannah: well, the benefits of using JS server side is that you can have a unified codebase that runs both sides, a benefit that outweighs the crappiness of the language itself.
13:43 rbuels kai: yes, it's quite good for a language made up in two weeks.
13:43 rbuels kai: and sure, there's a lot of horrible javascript out there.
13:44 rbuels kai: but i challenge you to look at *good* javascript, and tell me that it's nice
13:44 * rbuels chuckles
13:46 kai rbuels: OO in javascript is less hacky than in perl, IMO
13:46 rbuels kai: here's some good javascript: https://github.com/dojo/dojo/blob/master/_base/connect.js
13:46 rbuels kai: you say that oo is not hacky?
13:46 rbuels it *does* have builtin 'this' keyword, which is a plus
13:47 rbuels *but*, its implementation of 'this' has some real bugs that are a pain to work around
13:47 kai the thing to realize with OO in javascript is that it's plain OO, not class-based OO
13:47 kai which is a surprise if all you've seen before in OO is class-based
13:51 jhannah i don't know what OO means without classes

15:31 kai jhannah: you've got an object, that has members. but you don't have a meta-object that tracks whatever the object should look like
15:31 kai so usually you define a generator function that builds up similar objects the same way
15:54 jhannah "members"? uh, nevermind. I withdraw my question due to lack on mental capacity  :)
15:58 kai jhannah: read "things that the object has"
15:58 kai like functions and variables

18:15 ricardo_ Hi there. Any problems with DB::GenBank connection?
18:15 ricardo_ trying to get coordinates for exon start /end and it just takes forever
18:16 ricardo_ Yesterday it was fine
18:16 ricardo_ anyone else with similar issues?
18:17 * rbuels wouldn't be surprised if genbank was having problems
18:18 rbuels ricardo_: it's not uncommon for them to have server downtime and slowdowns
18:18 ricardo_ oh, I see. Im new to this, so it could be it.
18:18 ricardo_ Well, thanks, I will wait till tomorrow then
18:19 rbuels ricardo_: well, it might sort itself out sooner than that.
18:20 rbuels (unless you're on your way home now anyway)
18:22 ricardo_ haha im on my way home indeed.
18:22 ricardo_ thanks rbuels
