00:00 carandraug deafferret, bio-biblio is just an easy thing to get me the feeling of the project. My real itches are SeqIO and EUtils
00:00 deafferret your chunk you're pulling out can use whatever you want as long as it has tests and a consistent-looking user API with the rest of bioperl (IMHO)
00:00 deafferret carandraug: ya, great! go for it! the first one is always the hardest :)
00:00 deafferret computer problems are often trivial once you've solved them once.... teehee
00:01 carandraug deafferret, shouldn't we try to keep the same direction? 6 or moose. So that devs from the other distributions can join into the others easily
00:02 deafferret well, I would argue the point of distributions is to allow flexibility in implementation since each is encapsulated
00:03 deafferret consistency is only important inside any given dist, imo
00:03 deafferret you can't do perl6 in CPAN anyway, I don't think. there's a separate thing for that, and that code doesn't integrate with 5 afaik
00:04 deafferret http://modules.perl6.org
00:05 deafferret (I don't do 6. I always use Moose.)
00:05 carandraug deafferret, I like consistency all around. What I see as the advantage of smaller distributions is that makes much easier to prepare releases so they are rolled out faster. You mentioned that whoever takes care of the CPAN work burns out. This should make things easier. And a project that moves faster should attract more users and devs, and gain inertia again.
00:06 carandraug so a new user comes around, and can take on his own hands a subset of bioperl-live. He can make the release and gets more attached to it. At least that's how I see it
00:06 deafferret yup, I would think so. for example, Catalyst is split into lots of repos http://git.shadowcat.co.uk/gitweb/gitweb.cgi
00:07 deafferret DBIx::Class too
00:07 deafferret MooseX
00:08 deafferret I love Moose. If I was splitting out Bio::Foo I'd use Moose. If the bioperl-l list didn't like that I'd (1) develop it for Biome instead of bioperl-live, or (2) develop it in some other language
00:09 deafferret that's just me, my bias. you can do what you like :)
00:09 deafferret https://metacpan.org/module/HKCLARK/Catalyst-Manual-5.9006/lib/Catalyst/Manual/DevelopmentProcess.pod
00:12 carandraug I saw a repo of that already. There's not much of a focus. Are you going to do the bioperl sucks is great talk? Which side are you on?
00:13 deafferret ha, theoretically I'm giving the "is great!" side of that talk. I haven't submitted it yet. A PhD co-worker of mine is doing the "sucks" bit
00:13 deafferret if I submit it
00:13 deafferret been busy
00:15 carandraug deafferret, no one else writes code on my department. But the 2 people I know on the bioinformatics department and use perl, also don't use bioperl
00:16 deafferret genehack: ^ carandraug has heard about that talk we're supposedly giving :)
00:18 carandraug genehack, if bioperl sucks, what does blow?
00:21 genehack carandraug: no idea 8^)
00:21 genehack i thought we were going with a rules/drools set up, myself
00:23 carandraug genehack, so bioperl sucks but there's still no better alternative?
00:23 genehack carandraug: none that i know of, but i'm not the person to ask, really
00:23 genehack i haven't done bioinformatics in anger for a decade
00:25 carandraug genehack, i thought you ewre going to say anything non perl :p
00:25 dnewkirk_ O.o *wonders how genehack has survived*

18:44 carandraug I'm reading on Moose now because of the BioPerl plugin for Dist::Zilla. Not bad!
20:17 deafferret carandraug: :)
20:17 deafferret there's a bioperl plugin for dzil?
20:17 deafferret sexy
20:43 rbuels not as sexy as kale and turnips
20:43 rbuels or kale and rutabagas!
20:44 carandraug deafferret, yes there is. It was written 2 years ago but needs some fixes
20:45 carandraug I'm trying to make it write the POD sections of Feedback. But the plugin bundle is written in Moose which I had never used before.
21:01 deafferret "Build your distributions like Bioperl does" LOL  LOL  lol   lol   https://metacpan.org/module/Dist::Zilla::PluginBundle::Bioperl
21:02 deafferret rbuels: you sir are a marketing geneyus
21:02 * rbuels chuckles
21:02 rbuels i didn't even think about that
21:03 rbuels deafferret: https://metacpan.org/module/Dist::Zilla::PluginBundle::FLORA, https://metacpan.org/module/Dist::Zilla::PluginBundle::RBUELS
21:03 deafferret :)  ya, looking at this I realize I need to spend more dzil time
21:03 rbuels deafferret: just find/replace
21:03 deafferret ya, looks very cool. dzil++
21:04 rbuels dzil is really good, i use it for just about every cpan dist
21:04 rbuels not that i do a lot of perl anymore
21:06 deafferret mostly java now?
21:06 rbuels deafferret: erm, javascript
21:06 rbuels not the same, heh
21:06 * deafferret nods
21:07 deafferret rbuels: you goin'? http://dcbpw.org/dcbpw2013/
21:09 rbuels deafferret: nah, no travel budget
21:10 deafferret you can't bike to DC?
21:10 rbuels heh probably could ...
21:10 * rbuels checks google maps
21:10 rbuels deafferret: 45 hours of biking apparently
21:11 * deafferret mails his fitbit to rbuels
21:11 rbuels i think my butt would probably fall off
