11:46 shevy hey linnea
11:46 shevy any news?
15:36 linnea shevy: not really, but I think I start to work again with my code today
15:37 linnea shevy: storing and reading data is hard :)
15:37 shevy use yaml!
15:37 linnea 'm thinking should I just do to different hashes
15:37 linnea yeah I read yesterday about yaml
15:37 shevy it's the simplest way in my opinion
15:37 linnea was thinking could that be usable
15:37 linnea ok!
15:37 shevy I use yaml files for my configuration files
15:37 shevy editor: vim
15:38 linnea i'm more like nano person :D
15:38 shevy in my diamond shell, I do stuff like
15:38 shevy editor = bluefish
15:38 shevy save config
15:38 shevy and it saves this config into yaml files
15:38 shevy linnea, well that was just to illustrate
15:38 shevy on startup of the shell, those files are read (if they exist and can be found)
15:38 shevy you can load a yaml file via
15:38 shevy data = YAML.load_file("location_to_it_here.yml")
15:39 shevy saving is a tiny bit more complicated, usually you use yaml dump
15:39 shevy http://corelib.rubyonrails.org/classes/YAML.html#M002014
15:39 shevy sorry
15:39 shevy ruby on rails specific ...
15:39 shevy hash = {
15:40 shevy :name => 'ruby',
15:40 shevy :uses => [ 'scripting', 'web', 'testing', 'etc' ]
15:40 shevy }
15:40 shevy File.open(YOUR_YAML_FILE, "w") {|f| YAML.dump(hash, f)}
15:40 shevy that's it kinda
15:40 shevy where hash is the datastructure you want to save
15:40 shevy and YOUR_YAML_FILE the location of the file where you wanna put it
15:40 shevy like
15:40 shevy File.open('/test.yml', "w") {|f| YAML.dump(hash, f)}
15:45 linnea "YAML(tm) (rhymes with ‘camel’)"
15:45 linnea hmmm I don't recall how you say camel :D
15:45 linnea hey what is your native language?
16:17 shevy german
17:15 linnea cool
18:12 shevy joined #bioruby
