00:00 abrody i.e. the `require_auth()`decorator?
00:02 Ryan_Lane abrody: yep
00:03 abrody OK that's helpful, I'll think about approaches to testing, will let you know if I run into roadblocks in trying it out
00:07 Ryan_Lane abrody: cool. yeah. please do. :)
00:13 lyftbot [angusfretwell] Hey! Would anyone be able to help me configure a DynamoDB table for confidant? The docs are pretty vague :(
00:16 abrody yeah I also found the DynamoDB docs a little bit unclear
00:16 abrody for example I didn't realize that the index name is significant
00:33 abrody but in general it was pretty straightforward
00:41 abrody evidently dynamo docs are issue #44:  https://github.com/lyft/confidant/issues/44
00:43 abrody also @Ryan_Lane I'm curious if you've written anything for Confidant in a docker / container world
00:44 abrody I'm thinking about different approaches to pulling things down to containers, whether through an assumeRole or a EC2 metadata service proxy or whatever
00:44 Ryan_Lane angusfretwell: yeah, unfortunately I need to cleanup the docs to make the terminology the same between the aws console and the docs
00:45 Ryan_Lane abrody: yeah. we're actually doing this now
00:45 Ryan_Lane there's something we need to open source to make this easier
00:45 Ryan_Lane but....
00:46 Ryan_Lane abrody: https://github.com/dump247/ec2metaproxy
00:46 Ryan_Lane that may solve your problems
00:46 Ryan_Lane we're going to open source something that's a combination of https://github.com/dump247/ec2metaproxy and https://github.com/dump247/aws-mock-metadata
00:46 abrody ah awesome
00:47 Ryan_Lane ours is fully written in python and can be used inside or outside of aws
00:47 Ryan_Lane but works basically the exact same way at ec2metaproxy
00:47 Ryan_Lane *as
00:48 Ryan_Lane angusfretwell: if you're still around, I can probably help you through the process with the dynamo table
00:48 Ryan_Lane angusfretwell: I'm not sure if this will help or make things more confusing: https://github.com/lyft/confidant/blob/master/salt/orchestration/confidant.sls#L14-L39
00:49 Ryan_Lane (I've never created a dynamo table through the console)
00:54 abrody I can possibly provide some screenshots for the dynamodb table creation, since I just did it
00:54 Ryan_Lane that would be great if you could
00:54 Ryan_Lane then I can update the docs and include the screenshots

02:40 angusfretwell Ryan_Lane: hnn, the irc messages don't come through to gitter
02:41 angusfretwell mainly, i was confused with what range_key and hash_key refer to
02:45 angusfretwell also, i'm attempting to run confidant on a non-aws server; is this possible?

04:03 woodrow angusfretwell: http://docs.aws.amazon.com/amazondynamodb/latest/developerguide/HowItWorks.CoreComponents.html#HowItWorks.CoreComponents.PrimaryKey
04:03 angusfretwell thanks woodrow
04:04 angusfretwell for some reason i'm now getting "TableDoesNotExist: Table does not exist: `Requested resource not found: Table: confidant not found`" :'(
04:04 woodrow might need to create it first?
04:05 woodrow also, to your other question, i think it should be possible to run confidant outside of AWS, though it’ll be much more difficult (and potentially less useful) because you can’t take advantage of IAM roles
04:05 woodrow er, to be more specific, iam instance profiles where instances are granted an iam role whose credentials are managed automatically by aws
04:07 angusfretwell OK, thanks, I'll just spin up an EC2 instance then! I really don't understand IAM roles, haha
04:08 angusfretwell Oh, is it better to use ECS?
04:09 woodrow angusfretwell: that i don’t know
04:09 woodrow if you just want to kick the tires you don’t need to use aws
04:09 angusfretwell nah, intending to use it
04:10 woodrow but the power/scalability comes from the IAM roles and instance profiles
04:10 angusfretwell ok, cool, thank you for your help!
04:11 angusfretwell oh, one last thing, when creating an IAM role, what "role type" should i select?
04:44 woodrow angusfretwell: what do you mean?
04:44 woodrow is this something in the aws console?
04:44 angusfretwell yeah
04:45 woodrow what are your choices? is aws asking you about a managed policy or something by chance?

04:47 angusfretwell i'm not sure if its significant?

04:51 woodrow got it
04:54 woodrow angusfretwell: when you come back/if you look at the logs, you should try and skip that as you’ll want to configure your role policy manually
04:54 angusfretwell joined #confidant
04:56 angusfretwell woodrow: yeah, that was what i thought; but there doesn't seem to be a way to skip it. i THINK what you select there just reccomends some policies... i have been able to create them manually and apply them to a role, though
04:56 woodrow angusfretwell: you may have to create one and then immediately change the policy on it
