15:42 agoddard ohai!
15:42 pdurbin hey stranger
15:42 agoddard how's the new gig?
15:43 pdurbin doin' fun stuff - Dataverse Network - Documentation #1188: Move from Subversion to GitHub - Project Management at IQSS, Harvard University - https://redmine.hmdc.harvard.edu/issues/1188 :)
15:44 pdurbin sjoeboo_: i'm totally cribbing from your post: Moving Puppet From Subversion to GIT in 15 Minutes While Adding Dynamic Environments - Coffee & Beer - http://sjoeboo.github.com/blog/2012/02/08/moving-puppet-from-subversion-to-git-in-15-minutes-while-adding-dynamic-environments/
15:47 agoddard pdurbin: nice! I rememebr svn -> git migrations ;)
15:47 agoddard anyone here have experience with Amazon's Route53 DNS?'
15:47 pdurbin i don't have sjoeboo_ here to do it for me ;)
15:47 pdurbin agoddard: hmm
15:47 pdurbin whorka: do you? amazon thing ^^
15:48 pdurbin semiosis: i bet you do
15:52 agoddard I'm looking at a quote from dynect for $3-4k for managed DNS, and route53 seems way cheaper and just as good for what we need..
15:52 blondbaron i'm really happy with dynect
15:56 agoddard I'm sure we would be too, but it might come at the expense of some CDN performance gains, 'cause our budget is lacking a bit :(
15:57 pdurbin agoddard: the main reason not to run dns yourself is performance?
15:57 agoddard Our current DNS (DYN's 'standard' tier) has gone down 4 or 5 times this year, so I'm pretty sure any other offering (including DYN's enterprise stuff) is gonna be better.
15:58 agoddard pdurbin: ya, I guess performance, reliability and cost/benefit - if it's $300 a year, then not having to think about whether the DNS boxes are up is nice..
15:59 whorka haven't done any Amazon DNS pdurbin
16:08 semiosis agoddard: i'm all up in that r53... whats up?
16:10 agoddard semiosis: recommend it? We do around 30m queries/month, though we also run the gauntlet of DNS worst practices in our legacy DNS, so this move will be to clear that up too.
16:11 semiosis yeah i've been happy with it
16:13 pdurbin stackoverflow stopped hosting their own dns: New DNS Provider « Blog – Stack Exchange - http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2009/09/new-dns-provider/ ... no idea what they're doing now
16:13 pdurbin whorka: ack
16:58 jgtimmer pdurbin: an interesting podcast I just learned about: http://www.rce-cast.com/

17:01 pdurbin crimsonfubot: lucky /dev/hell podcast
17:02 crimsonfubot pdurbin: http://devhell.info/
17:02 jgtimmer hmm. it's not down, just not reachable from uni network :-s
17:02 pdurbin that one's pretty entertaining (/dev/hell). it's a bit php-oriented but the guys are open to many technologies
17:02 pdurbin crimsonfubot: lucky hypercritical podcast

17:03 larsks joined #crimsonfu
17:03 pdurbin i've been falling behind of hypercritical but it's great. very technical. a bit too mac-oriented for me but he had a great episode about filesystems... xfs... btrfs

17:04 crimsonfubot pdurbin: http://twit.tv/twig
17:04 pdurbin i've been falling behind on TWiG too but it's good. more about people and technology. smart people on it
17:06 jgtimmer wow, thankx

21:20 pdurbin sjoeboo_: i'm wondering if you set up an authors file when you ran svn2git... it's choking on my authors file... i don't see you using one here: http://sjoeboo.github.com/blog/2012/02/08/moving-puppet-from-subversion-to-git-in-15-minutes-while-adding-dynamic-environments/
21:22 pdurbin when i use --authors ~/authors.txt or set up ~/.svn2git/authors i get... command failed: git svn fetch
21:23 pdurbin er, i get this... command failed: 2>&1 git svn fetch
21:26 pdurbin hmm, finding some stuff here - command failed: 2>&1 git svn fetch · Issue #69 · nirvdrum/svn2git · GitHub - https://github.com/nirvdrum/svn2git/issues/69
21:34 sjoeboo_ pdurbin: no, no authors file was ever usd
21:34 pdurbin :(
21:34 sjoeboo_ never had one in svn
21:43 semiosis poll: what shell do you use?  and, briefly, why?
21:43 pdurbin bash because i like defaults
21:43 semiosis bash -- because it's everywhere
21:44 spilth bash -- i am a sheep
21:44 semiosis pdurbin: yay defaults :)
21:46 sjoeboo_ late to the game, but bash
21:48 pdurbin like perl, bash is good enough :)
21:50 pdurbin ah. so svn2git is choking on missing authors. kind of makes sense. i'm running `git svn fetch` to find them. here's my repo: https://github.com/dvn/dvn-sourceforge2github
21:51 pdurbin it's funny though... these authors don't appear in the output from this: svn log --quiet https://dvn.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/dvn/dvn-app/trunk | grep -E "r[0-9]+ \| .+ \|" | awk '{print $3}' | sort | uniq
21:52 pdurbin which is recommended from https://github.com/nirvdrum/svn2git
21:52 pdurbin semiosis: am i ruining your survey? sorry :)
21:58 Itkovian joined #crimsonfu
22:00 ironcamel ... | perl -lane 'print $F[2] if /r\d+ | .+ /' | sort | uniq
22:00 pdurbin ironcamel: heh. i just copied and pasted from that page. i'm sure there's a better way
22:13 pdurbin ironcamel: you can send that guy a pull request :)
22:29 pdurbin so, the svn2git conversion worked once i added the three missing authors... which again i tracked down by running `git svn fetch` after getting that error from `svn2git file:///Users/pdurbin/github/dvn/dvn-sf-rsync --trunk dvn-app/trunk --branches dvn-app/branches`
22:54 semiosis pdurbin: what survey?
22:54 semiosis hehehe
22:54 semiosis had to go afk to drop some kung fu on a dev's javascript
22:55 semiosis crazy safari on ios submitting a form by get when all other browsers were doing post like they should
22:57 pdurbin speaking of odd mobile browsers, i forget if i sent this along... i know i did in #ilbot - disappearing ilbot logs - YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TriSozFkA-Y
22:58 pdurbin those are my kids making noise in the background. such is my life
23:00 pdurbin the discussion in #ilbot: http://irclog.perlgeek.de/ilbot/2012-12-02#i_6204065
