00:09 bene_ surprisingly compelling reading from a post-mortem/human factors/complex systems/dynamic failure modes POV
00:09 bene_ it definitely helps if you're a bit of an aviation geek
00:12 pdurbin there's a nice postmortems community on google+
00:12 bene_ github does good ones too
00:12 bene_ we're considering instituting a formal policy at work
00:32 pdurbin we just had one today. our first, I guess
00:34 pdurbin combined with this presentation (more or less): http://huit.harvard.edu/presentations/process-communication-practical-guide-project-managers
00:34 pdurbin it was good. we should probably make postmortems a regular thing
00:35 pdurbin bene_: how often do you do them?

13:45 bene_ we don't do them currently
13:45 bene_ we have incident reports
13:45 bene_ but they are more reports for stakeholders about what happened
13:46 bene_ rather than an in-depth analysis of the failure modes at each step of the system development and steps we can take to head them off in the future
15:41 pdurbin ah, I'm not using postmortem in the sense of a failure. maybe "retrospective" is a better word. just a review of the release and how it went. lessons learned, etc.
15:57 bene_ yeah, the dev teams here are "agile" and would call that a retro
16:18 pdurbin gotcha
16:42 bene_ http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/sof/5299339737.html <- sbgrid is hiring someone to run/extend their databank thing

16:56 pdurbin codex larsks bene_: tell your friends!
16:56 pdurbin everyone else: tell your Boston friends! :)
16:56 bene_ that job description is meh
16:57 bene_ they're not running dataverse now, are they?
16:57 bene_ their in-house stuff is all python+django
16:57 bene_ dvn is java and requisite sysadmin to make it all run?
16:58 bene_ i wonder how much sysadmin is required
16:59 pdurbin bene_: how do you know so much? :)
17:01 bene_ i have no idea what you're talking about :P
17:01 bene_ are you referencing my former employment with them?
17:03 pdurbin heh
