14:34 hydrajump ^^ HTTP load testing tool and library
15:27 pdurbin hydrajump: interesting
15:28 pdurbin probably not the perfect tool for the problem that's top of mind for me though
15:29 pdurbin Let's say your users (your spouse and kids) are complaining that the internet connection is kind of crappy. It's slow sometimes. Doesn't seem to work well generally. Especially in the evening.
15:30 pdurbin How would you measure this? How would you monitor it? What numbers or metrics could you point at to argue that it's fixed now? (After you've made a change I mean. After you've switched ISPs or changed the router or whatever.)
15:31 pdurbin Or is it impossible to measure? Do you just ask them, "Is it better now?"
17:43 bene_ smokeping
17:44 * pdurbin looks at http://oss.oetiker.ch/smokeping/
17:45 bene_ https://www.dropbox.com/s/zpu96pvrj3xnoe1/Screenshot%202015-11-14%2012.45.02.png?dl=0 <- first IP hop on my outbound path
17:52 pdurbin bene_: what happened back in Jan/Feb?
17:53 hydrajump bene_: you've deployed smokeping on your home LAN and it pings some external servers to provide those graphs of your internet connection stats?
17:57 pdurbin hydrajump: bene_ is a geek's geek
18:45 bene_ yeah, i have a linux box in the basement
18:45 bene_ my first 3 IP hops to get out of RCN's network are always the same
18:46 bene_ so i graph the latency/loss to those IPs
18:46 bene_ and then there's a handful of other machines on the net that i access regularly that i also graph
18:51 hydrajump bene_: how frequently do you ping those 3 IPs?
18:52 bene_ i think it's 20 pings every 5 minutes
18:52 bene_ but it's tunable in the config iirc
20:04 pdurbin bene_: and you find the data useful. When your network feels crappy you can look at your data and say, "Yep! Crappy!"?
