15:00 mhayden pdurbin: decent response -> https://www.happyassassin.net/2016/06/16/on-snappy-and-flatpak-business-as-usual-in-the-canonical-propaganda-department/
15:12 pdurbin mhayden: wow, thanks. Great post.
15:12 mhayden yeah, i'm on the fence
15:13 mhayden this seems like another canonical-driven tech that will fall flat
15:13 mhayden and they're not defaulting to open on some of it -- which scares me a bit
15:21 bene yeah
15:22 bene canonical's track record on some of the community stuff is not that great
15:22 bene i don't really have an opinion
15:22 bene or maybe it's "safe to ignore for now"
15:22 bene "check again in 6-12 months"
15:24 bene the articles i've read without actually playing with it make it sound like a cross between docker and nix packaging
15:24 bene nix is in the same camp for me i guess
15:24 bene i read the nix guy's thesis 7-8 years ago and nix packaging sounds pretty neat
15:25 bene i just don't anticipate ever using it
15:31 pdurbin mhayden: the thing about the server end being closed source is a bit troubling but the project seems fairly open to me. Public mailing list archive at https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/snapcraft/ and I just linked to the article in the #snappy channel, which is logged at https://irclogs.ubuntu.com
15:42 pdurbin huh, Snappy was mentioned at https://gitlab.com/dustyweb/talks/blob/master/guix/libreplanet_2016/libreplanet_guix.pdf but it didn't really register with me I guess.
15:43 pdurbin bene: I'm still fuzzy on what the connection is between guix and nix: http://irclog.perlgeek.de/crimsonfu/2016-03-19
16:25 bene my jaded tech self says the guix stuff is a GNU NIH project
16:26 bene but i don't know for sure
16:26 bene there does seem to be a lot of overlap
19:08 pdurbin yeah
19:09 pdurbin no discussion at https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2016/06/20/%23snappy.html#t15:23 . oh well :)
