17:00 hydrajump in for instance dnsmasq.conf you can do the following: address=/youtube.com/<some_ip_address>
17:00 hydrajump is this referred to as "DNS spoofing" or "DNS overriding" or something else. Intent is not malicious
17:19 dotplus for the common case where <some_ip_address> is localhost or other non-valid location, organizations doing that would call it a DNS blackhole, their clients might call it "breaking DNS" or "DNS spoofing":)
17:19 dotplus it's the DNS equivalent of what the network community calls "null routing"
17:24 dotplus hydrajump: if <some_ip_address> *is* valid, then I suppose you could consider it "caching" (assuming it is kept up to date and always valid). But it smells bad. What do you mean by "not malicious"?
17:36 hydrajump dotplus: a use case I've seen is to bypass geoblocking. Configure dnsmasq to answer DNS requests for youtube.com replying with the IP address of a proxy that is located in the same geographic location as the service that is geoblocking you. In this case youtube.com
17:36 hydrajump is that a "non-valid location"?
17:50 dotplus heh. depends on perspective. Probably from the perspective of youtube.com: "yes", from the perspective of the users who want not to be geoblocked "no, it works so it's valid"
17:53 dotplus I'm tempted to say that the controller of the zone (should) get to decide what is valid. And those who wish to use/provide DNS results different from what is provided/configured by the controller of the zone have to admit that they are spoofing. Whether it's acceptable to spoof or not is another question, IMHO, there are circumstances when it's acceptable.
18:02 hydrajump dotplus: at least I know how to refer to it now ;) thanks
