17:24 pdurbin Ok, I'm not sure how coherent this is but I just submitted this to the bottom of an Apple support page:
17:24 pdurbin "How do I connect with Thunderbolt 3 only? I have a new iMac with Thunderbolt 3 and using Command-F2 doesn't do anything. I have it connected to my new Macbook that only has Thunderbolt 3 using an expensive cable I bought for this purpose."
17:24 pdurbin This support page: Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592
17:26 pdurbin Even before I clicked "no" next to "helpful?" it said only 46% of people found the article helpful.
17:27 pdurbin Am I doing something wrong? I'm supposed to hit Command-F2 on the iMac, right? That's what the article says
17:27 pdurbin Hmm, under the table that says "iMac models you can use as a display" it says "iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and later iMac models can't be used as Target Display Mode displays.
17:29 pdurbin Does this mean that there's no solution? Does this mean that if you buy a new iMac and a new Macbook and an expensive Thunderbolt 3 cable to connected them that there's no way to use the iMac as an external monitor for the Macbook?
17:30 pdurbin If so the guy at the Apple store shouldn't have sold me this expensive Thunderbolt 3 cable.
17:32 pdurbin He said it would work.
18:32 bene you didn't say which model of imac you are using
18:33 bene and it does sound like it doesn't work on the new imacs

21:08 pdurbin The iMac is an iMac18,3 (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017): https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201634
21:08 pdurbin The MacBook is a MacBook10,1 (Retina, 12-inch, 2017): https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201608
21:14 pdurbin "an Apple spokesperson told AppleInsider that 2017 iMacs are not designed to support Target Display Mode, and clarified that the feature is not planned to ever reappear" http://appleinsider.com/articles/17/06/15/2017-4k-5k-imacs-wont-support-target-display-mode-despite-thunderbolt-3
21:15 pdurbin Sounds like there's an awful hack to use "vnc://..." described at http://www.ajaydivakaran.com/imac-retina-and-target-display-mode/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6jVQhyMDJU . In that video the dude concludes that he's going to sell his iMac retina 5K.
21:16 pdurbin https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/153894/can-you-use-imac-retina-5k-as-external-monitor-for-a-macbook-pro
21:18 pdurbin Heh. That question was asked by Joel Spolsky. :)
21:21 pdurbin That Apple Insider article explains that Target Display Mode has been around since late 2009 but it's no longer around. I guess that's what the support article says too, now that I'm slowly grokking all of this. Bummer. And I'm still mad at the guy at the genius bar for telling me it works. >:(
21:21 pdurbin First world problems.
