00:18 sm byorgey: I think I see a stale darcs transfer-mode process that appeared in the last hour.. if you have any more info on what happened, I'd be glad to know

09:03 gal_bolle hi all
09:03 gal_bolle argh, i'm entering cabal hell
10:36 dixie is there also cabal heaven ? :)
10:45 gal_bolle there's a cabal nirvana where you realise all packages are vain anyway, and you just do Typed tagless-final interpretations in your head
11:07 gh_ joined #darcs
11:09 gh_ gal_bolle, try using cabal-dev
11:09 gal_bolle thanks for the tip

12:18 MasseR How come no-one ever seem to recommend virthualenv?
12:21 favonia joined #darcs
12:37 gh_ MasseR, go ahead and sell it to us
12:38 MasseR Virtual environment, ghc-pkg and the rest of the tools work as if they just have a smaller subset of packages
12:46 gh_ what's the difference with cabal-dev?
13:06 MasseR Cabal-dev wraps cabal
13:06 MasseR Whereas virthualenv sets package directory to local
13:06 MasseR IIRC opening ghci with cabal-dev is 'cabal-dev ghci'
13:06 MasseR Whereas with virthualenv it's 'ghci'
13:06 MasseR The same for gh
13:06 MasseR *ghc

13:44 markstos Good day #darcs.   "darcs help" doesn't mention the existence of "darcs help markdown". Is that a mistake?
13:51 markstos nice: quickly browse a good deal of the manual as HTML in your console: darcs help markdown | markdown | w3m -T text/html
13:51 gh_ yes, it doesn't, and yes it probably should
13:51 gh_ as with `darcs help manpage`
13:52 markstos I /just/ looked to see if something like that was present, and decided it wasn't there.
13:52 * markstos tries it.
13:53 markstos What's the best command to pipe a man page too: nroff?
13:53 gh_ I don't know
13:54 markstos Is OK: darcs help manpage | nroff | less ... bu tnot quite right.
13:54 markstos The bullet points are wrapped together here instead of having newlines after each bullet: − −−patches=regex is  a  synonym  for  −−matches=’name  regex’  −
13:54 mornfall markstos: You can darcs help manpage > foo && man ./foo I guess.
13:55 gh_ yes it works
13:57 markstos Got it: darcs help manpage | man -l -
13:57 markstos "-l" == " local file" and "-" == read from STDIN
13:57 byorgey sm: ?  something related to one of my repos you mean?
13:57 byorgey I'm not sure
13:58 markstos I think my team may like these commands. Sometimes it's easier to search and browse through one big page than it is to poke in several subcommand help sections to find what you want.
14:06 markstos I created an issue to document  "help markdown" and "help manpage" http://bugs.darcs.net/issue2307
14:11 markstos I read that this feature was added in the sprint. I have compiled a binary since then. How do I try it out? "allow the user to preview dependencies"
14:16 markstos Thanks for the sprint write-up. There's a small link to update near the end. It intends to link to list donors who helped sponsor the event. Instead, it links to a page asking for donations.
14:17 markstos I think the page intended to be linked to was this one: http://darcs.net/Thanks
14:19 markstos I was also going to update http://darcs.net/Donations to link to /Thanks, but oddly there's no edit link on that page, even if I'm logged in. Perhaps that page is "locked" because of the PayPal button? That could be a good idea.
14:19 markstos I was thinking of a small final section at the bottom "Previous and Current Sponsors" which links to the page.
14:20 markstos My darcs time is up this morning. I'll likely check back later today.
14:22 Heffalump markstos: yes t's locked. I'll add that.
14:23 Heffalump markstos: (or you can do it in the repo and push the change)
14:24 markstos I wonded about that. I'm out of time this morning, but will consider that.
14:24 markstos ("wondered")

14:31 iago it would be nice if it were possible to configure Darcs so that when your are recording a patch it just runs the editor instead of asking you first for the patch name and then if you want to give a description
14:31 iago IMO
14:32 Heffalump does --edit work?
14:33 iago --edit does not skip the "What is the patch name?" prompt
14:34 kmels joined #darcs
14:34 markstos I agree that could be nice. Sometimes at the patch name prompt, I just type: x-Enter-y, and that quickly pops up the editor, and I just need to erase "x".
14:35 markstos left #darcs
14:36 iago maybe --edit can skip the patch-name-prompt
14:36 iago I think it is sensible
14:36 iago if you are going to open the editor anyway...
14:43 iago I'm willing to create the patch, although I presume that such UI changes would require more discussion

17:09 sm g'day all

17:20 stepkut sounds like darcs bridge is getting some love?
17:42 gh_ stepcut, yes, but it's a hard problem to solve…
17:43 gh_ hmm, packs and patch index don't combine well
17:47 sm MasseR: virthualenv, now http://hackage.haskell.org/package/hsenv , is indeed much more transparent and I used to recommend it, but it is a bit fiddly to work with, and it was stuck in limbo with a pending name change and no updates for ever
17:49 sm in cabal-dev's favour it seems easier to get started with, it has a familiar name, its package databases are in visible non-dot directories so you'll find them when you return to a project
17:50 sm and now that cabal's built-in sandboxing is expected any-day-now, cabal-dev/hsenv seem less attractive
18:07 sm byorgey: yes, yesterday on darcs hub at about 13:20 PST a darcs transfer-mode process was started in one of your repos and subsequently became "hung". This was harmless since transfer-mode doesn't leave a lock file but it's unexpected

18:50 byorgey sm: hmm, as far as I can tell/remember, I did pulls/pushes to two repos on darcshub yesterday: 'split' and 'highlight-versions'
18:50 byorgey the work on highlight-versions was much earlier than 13:20 PST
18:52 byorgey the pushes to 'split' were a bit later (around 14:30 PST), but maybe it was a pull?
18:52 byorgey I don't know, I didn't notice anything unusual
