15:21 sm http://joyful.com/blog/2013-07-21-darcsden-1.1-darcs-hub-news.html
15:35 sm first use of through the web edit, to tweak planet darcs - that was really handy !
15:35 sm that one should move to the darcs account
15:36 sm http://hub.darcs.net/simon/planet.darcs.net
15:36 mornfall talking about a darcs account -- group support in hub.darcs.net may be useful :-) (like organizations in github?)
15:38 sm hi mornfall
15:39 mornfall hi :-)
15:39 mornfall whose student is jlneder btw?
15:41 sm Guillaume by the looks of it
15:41 mornfall lambdabot: @tell jlneder I am not very fond of the idea of reviving hashed-storage 0.5 and adding new features... try to catch me online to talk more about this (I will be around more often for a couple weeks again)
15:41 lambdabot Consider it noted.
15:42 sm is that a valid nick ?
15:42 mornfall Presumably, he used that when /query-ing me (but I was gone and when I noticed he was already offline).
15:42 sm ah good

19:04 pointfree-w530 I've been thinking a little bit about what darcs and darcsden can do to distinguish themselves from history oriented version control..and I have two ideas.

19:17 sm lay it on us pointfree-w530
19:22 burp joined #darcs
19:22 pointfree-w530 Semantic markdown for darcsden (linked data for issues, code comments, authors and READMEs) and named-data networking for darcs because darcs is so patch/content-centric (CCNx).
19:23 lpsmith joined #darcs
19:26 frozencemetery joined #darcs
19:28 sm is there a small concrete example that could be implemented first ?
19:29 pointfree-w530 The CCNx for version control has already been explored for git ( http://academiccommons.columbia.edu/catalog/ac:142580 ) but I think it would be an even better fit for darcs potentially because darcs is all about the content, not the history.
19:29 pointfree-w530 Looks like someone started a ccnx implementation for haskell already.
19:29 pointfree-w530 ...but didn't get very far http://hackage.haskell.org/package/ccnx

19:35 pointfree-w530 As for semantic markdown github already does something related with referencing issues in comments. For true semantic-web linked data we would need something more general. But it would also need to feel natural like hashtags. I'm thinking of *inline* markdown.
19:36 pointfree-w530 I found something called TwitLogic https://github.com/joshsh/twitlogic/wiki/syntax-conventions but it looks too complicated and unnatural to catch on.
19:40 pointfree-w530 I'm thinking of maybe using some markdown around the subject and object and assuming the rest of the sentence itself to be the predicate that glues the subject and object together.
19:40 pointfree-w530 For example...

19:46 pointfree-w530 ..Fix [issue1] with <function2>
19:47 pointfree-w530 If we used something like FOAF for users this would make federating darcsden easier.

22:17 bfrank darcs diff is very slow
22:43 edwardk joined #darcs
23:05 sm there might be a way to speed it up (use latest darcs and/or make sure it has created a "patch index")
23:06 sm I thought that got worked on
23:06 mizu_no_oto joined #darcs
23:16 bfrank patch index?
23:16 sm a recent optimisation, there should be some docs
23:17 bfrank so I am running 2.8.4
23:17 bfrank does it have that ability/
23:17 bfrank ?
23:17 sm I don't know, sorry
23:21 bfrank I guess 2.8.4 doesn't?
23:21 pointfree-w530 bfrank: I don't know but http://hub.darcs.net/darcs/darcs-screened may have it.
23:21 bfrank it seems like optimize is supposed to have a flag --patch-index
23:21 sm that's the one
23:22 bfrank hm
23:22 bfrank yeah, darc show patch-index-status doesn't work in 2.8.4 either
23:22 sm darcs 2.9 (ie the latest from darcs-screened) has it. It'll create it automatically.
23:22 bfrank when is 2.9 planned to be released?
23:22 sm good question
23:23 bfrank I don't have the necessary tools to compile screened
23:23 bfrank so I will probably have to wait till it is built
23:23 bfrank but that sounds very useful from what I am reading
23:24 sm it shouldn't be hard to build.. do you have cabal ?
23:24 bfrank nope
23:25 pointfree-w530 what's your platform?
23:25 bfrank os x
23:25 bfrank 10.8
23:29 sm should be just a matter of: run haskell platform installer, darcs get http://hub.darcs.net/darcs/darcs-screened && cd darcs-screened && cabal update && cabal install
23:31 bfrank hm
23:31 bfrank what is haskell platform installer?
23:31 pointfree-w530 If you don't have ghc+cabal maybe you could try one of these nightly binaries or something else https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/haskell-cafe/IfJzvU636P8
23:31 bfrank oh nightlies
23:32 bfrank that could work
23:33 pointfree-w530 I haven't tried them myself because I don't have OS X.
23:36 sm bfrank: http://haskell.org/platform
23:36 sm the easiest way to get cabal (and ghc and a bunch of packages)
23:37 bfrank downloading that
23:37 pointfree-w530 Probably a more stable experience.
23:37 bfrank I couldn't access that forum post
23:37 sm stand back everyone. Software being installed.
23:37 bfrank ha
23:38 bfrank getting darcs-screened
23:39 bfrank hmm
23:39 pointfree-w530 Ah you may have needed to be logged into a google account to access it.
23:39 bfrank it says darcs failed
23:39 bfrank it says HINT: I could not reach the ollowing repository
23:39 sm umm.. try it again ?
23:40 sm sounds like my fault, I just happened to be deploying an update that second
23:40 bfrank oh
23:40 bfrank crap
23:41 bfrank it requires xcode
23:41 * sm stands well back
23:41 sm forgot about that small detail
23:41 bfrank not sure I will tackle this tonight
23:41 sm sorry
23:41 bfrank ha, no big deal
23:41 bfrank still
23:42 bfrank patch-index sounds interesting
23:42 bfrank I wonder what kind of speedup I would experience with it
23:42 sm I believe a good one for a several things (diff, annotate..)
23:43 bfrank certainly sounds plausible
23:43 sm with some pauses while creating the index in new repos
23:43 sm I mean, in old repos
23:43 sm it also slowed some things down but I think those regressions are fixed
23:43 bfrank that sounds pretty cool
23:43 pointfree-w530 Do you just need gcc, make etc or something from xcode?
23:43 bfrank I assume it needs gcc, make, etc.
23:44 bfrank I guess, if someone does have a nightly build that I could test, that would rock too
23:46 sm http://hub.darcs.net/ now gets A grade from YSlow
23:49 pointfree-w530 bfrank, there is an installer for gcc and related tools without xcode https://github.com/kennethreitz/osx-gcc-installer that might work and takes less space.
23:49 edwardk joined #darcs
23:49 bfrank hmm
