15:16 sm morning all
15:16 sm hmm, http://hub.darcs.net/CKPA5FRnPP7UAdkDQ8cv - sinister scheme or harmless norse-language experiments ?
15:40 owst Looks a bit spammy to me sm
15:49 mizu_no_oto joined #darcs
15:56 sm that's the trouble with hosting free services.. monitoring and deciding these cases
15:57 owst Can you disable the repo/account without deleting it?
15:57 owst With some "email us if you think this is wrong"-type message
15:58 owst Can you see when it was last/ever accessed?
15:58 sm with a little programming, sure. There needs to be some kind of strategy in place
15:58 owst Right
15:58 sm a lot of these empty accounts should be cleaned up too, I don't know if they're humans at all
15:59 owst Why do you want/need to clean them up?
16:01 sm good question. Because.. they obscure the real activity level on darcs hub.. they potentially hide malware.. they consume resources one way or another (eg making it harder to find things in couchdb admin ui)..

16:09 sm this modern issue is also in the back of my mind: eventually someone on an NSA tracking list uploads something, and I could get one of those secret letters and be forced to hand over logins or the db or get my machine compromised or who knows what
16:14 pointfree-w530 Some people create accounts on websites and don't do anything with them for a long time and then come back later (myself included).
16:14 sm sure, I know lots of these are legitimate
16:15 sm and there ways to manage that
16:18 sm seems I do need to maintain some level of user account validity/legitimacy/oversight as long as I'm hosting
16:18 pointfree-w530 Maybe a captcha would be in order -- as a sort of preemptive strike against spam?
16:18 sm which is costly, and makes me want to charge for something - private repos in particular
16:19 sm unless I/we come up with more easy and effective monitoring tricks
16:19 lelit joined #darcs
16:19 sm pointfree-w530: something more challenging that "which rcs is this about" eh
16:20 sm maybe, though it's an arms race, captchas get broken too when it becomes worthwhile
16:20 sm have to step away for a little, biab
16:25 pointfree-w530 I'm sure github gets hammered with spam. I wonder what they do.

16:33 sm they charge money, make meelleons of dollars, hire a huge team, and go down frequently :)

19:50 bfrank___ might there be a way to at some point cache a snapshot and maybe another snapshot after 5 revisions, etc, and just do that to speed up the application of patches?
19:50 bfrank___ sort of like what revlog does?
19:51 bfrank___ like offer an optimize feature that can build a cache like that, or remove it, or what not?
19:52 bfrank___ oh, I guess that wouldn't work, with patches being reorderable
20:08 dolio joined #darcs
20:08 Heffalump the snapshots could be rebuilt on reordering, it's not a very common operation
20:13 bfrank___ yeah, I just was wondering if there was some way to speed up patch application
20:29 Heffalump having snapshots wouldn't help the application of new patches, but it'd be good for going back in history
20:50 Heffalump darcs used to have a concept called 'checkpoints' which were snapshots, but they were removed as part of a repo format change
