00:56 dolio Has a copy patch (if that's the right notion) ever been considered for darcs?

04:32 Heffalump dolio: not invertible. In particular, what happens if you try to cherry pick from before the copy patch if the two files have diverged after?
04:47 kofno joined #darcs
05:46 Heffalump this is no doubt a stupid question, but how do I get record to ask me for a patch name interactively again?
05:47 Heffalump I see, --prompt-long-comment. That seems counter-intuitive.

13:34 * kowey will probably be focusing free-hacking time on GenI whilst back in Florida (couple of weeks), but maybe it'll be darcs time again too
13:37 kowey sm: new-hub.darcs.net created as requested
13:38 kowey sorry for the delay, have been away quite a bit (it's one of these things too where once you're away for a while, it's a bit tricky to get back in)

14:50 n-dolio Heffalump: I'm not sure what the question means. Do you mean, picking changes to the copies without picking the copy? Or pushing changes to the original past the copy?
14:53 n-dolio It seems like the answer to the former is, "you can't do that," and the latter is that it shows up in all the copies.
14:53 lelix joined #darcs
14:59 n-dolio I'd just heard mercurial (and pretty much only mercurial, I guess) could do it, and was curious.

16:55 Heffalump n-dolio: hmm.  Now I'm not sure what I meant. I'll think about it mroe carefully and write a FAQ page as this comes up every so often :-)
16:57 jlneder joined #darcs
17:02 n-dolio I guess you might also mean not picking certain changes before the copy.
17:03 n-dolio Although that doesn't seem that bad to me.
17:04 n-dolio Anyhow, I can definitely see how it'd introduce a point that you can't walk past in general. But darcs has those already, right?
17:09 n-dolio A more limited use case also might be: partition this file and place part of it in a new file. But the UI for that might be difficult, and I don't think there's a good way to decide where to put changes you're commuting past the split, so you'd just have to ask.
17:10 n-dolio But it feels more linear.
17:19 alexei___ joined #darcs
17:23 Heffalump n-dolio: for partitioning the file, our strategy is to have a hunk move patch (eventually..)
17:23 Heffalump ok, so here's the problem with copy, I think. Presumably you'd expect a change to file A to merge with a copy of file A to file B, giving the same change to both files A and B?
17:34 mizu_no_oto joined #darcs
17:52 Heffalump hmm, I sort of see a way to do it, but patches on files would have to be generalised to make the same change on sets of files. I'm not sure if that's useful in practice.

19:50 notdan Hi
19:50 notdan I am very new to darcs
19:50 notdan and I can't figure a way to push my patchset to darcshub
19:51 notdan I tried doing 'darcs send co-dan@hub.darcs.net:xmonad-config', but it asked me for an email to send the patches to
19:52 favonia joined #darcs
19:53 notdan Oh, I need to do 'push' and pull
19:53 notdan sorry, I've misread the deocs
19:53 notdan *docs
19:54 Heffalump send is for submitting patches
19:55 amgarchIn9 "darcs send repo" same as "darcs push/pull repo"
19:56 amgarchIn9 I use "darcs push hdn:pts" with "hdn" being the entry in ~/.ssh/config encoding the host, username and SSH key to use
19:58 notdan Is there anything like 'git log -S<str>' in darcs?
19:59 Heffalump darcs changes --match 'hunk <str>'
20:00 notdan Oh, I didn't include the hunk part
20:00 notdan thanks :)
20:02 Heffalump there's a whole language of things you can match for, hunk contents is just one of them
20:05 notdan Where can i read about that? I can't seem to find that on wiki

20:11 Heffalump http://darcs.net/manual/Darcs_commands.html#SECTION00611000000000000000
20:33 notdan duh, manual. Thanks Heffalump
20:37 Heffalump I'm not actually quite sure of the state of the manual. It used to be generated from the source, but some of that got changed and I'm not sure how it gets updated now.
20:37 Heffalump Anyway, match is way old and hasn't changed for ages, so that'll be uptodate whatever

23:34 onetom Heffalump: bark: the new annotate functionality is not a very bad idea actually. it's thought provoking to see it done in a different way
23:39 Heffalump I don't particularly want to copy github, but I'd like to be able to see the author of a line at the same time as the line itself
