04:53 Heffalump bsrk: hi
04:53 bsrk hi
04:54 bsrk I have worked on the changes from simon this week,
04:54 Heffalump what were those?
04:56 bsrk they were changes on mime map (adding support to a lot more extensions)
04:56 bsrk updating tests so that they work (atleast on my end)
04:57 bsrk I have also worked on adding new tests
04:57 bsrk but I can't upload them because I can't test them yet (I am working remotely)
04:59 bsrk That is it.
04:59 bsrk I am not sure if I want to change the ui of branches back to what it was.
04:59 bsrk What is your opinion on it?
05:00 Heffalump I'm not sure either. sm should have the last word.
05:00 Heffalump have you looked into feeding the mime map updates back upstream?
05:01 bsrk Upsteam where?
05:01 Heffalump aren't you overriding/adding to the default ones provided by a library you are using?
05:01 bsrk Oh, I see.
05:02 bsrk I am not too sure if they want to have more these though
05:02 bsrk These mime maps are specifically for programing languages (ie, they are not standard ones)
05:03 Heffalump you mean your extra ones are, or the base ones are?
05:03 bsrk and only languages that codemirror (an external javascript library we are using for syntax higlighting) supports are present
05:03 Heffalump I see
05:03 bsrk The extra ones that I added
05:05 Heffalump ok, so there's not too much time left before the end of the project. What are the next priorities, and overall what do you expect to have done by the end?
05:06 bsrk I think I will be satisfied if simon finds the current work good. I am feeling like skipping hakyll support, and concentrate on existing features.
05:06 Heffalump yes, I think hakyll is a dead loss
05:07 Heffalump given the time left and security issues
05:07 Heffalump have you talked to sm about the changes you've made?
05:07 bsrk Not yet, but I will soon.
05:07 bsrk Have you tried the tests again?
05:08 Heffalump not yet. Are there any now that will work without google/github?
05:08 bsrk Yes, the last two
05:09 bsrk edit file, and compare repository
05:09 bsrk you will probably have to set atleast an email address env though.
05:11 bsrk I also wanted to ask for more fix suggestions.
05:11 bsrk I am running low as I can't work on tests until Tuesday.
05:11 Heffalump fix in what sense?
05:12 bsrk Whatever changes we want to see.
05:12 Heffalump as far as the tests are concerned the easier they are to run the better. In their current form I doubt anyone will ever run them.
05:14 Heffalump on the UI side try to just generally make it look nicer. The "login with github" and "login with google" buttons are currently quite dissonant with the rest of the UI

05:17 bsrk_ heffalump: okay
05:17 bsrk_ I will make the setup for the tests more helpful
05:17 Heffalump and try to grab sm on IRC, it'll make iterating on comments much much easier
05:18 bsrk_ yes
05:18 bsrk_ although I generally find that it is hard to catch someone on the IRC
05:19 Heffalump can you just stay logged in all day?
05:20 bsrk_ I will probably have to change a few settings, but I will give it a try
05:21 Heffalump ok. don't forget your blogpost is way out of date.
05:21 Heffalump see you Monday?
05:21 bsrk_ okay

14:49 sm_ morning all
16:50 Heffalump hi sm
16:53 sm hi Heffalump. Sorry I can't be at your meetings..
16:55 Heffalump no problem, hopefully bsrk will manage to intersect with you at some point soon...
16:57 * sm sends a quick mail

17:37 mornfall sm: I don't know what really prevented it.
17:38 mornfall sm: Presumably darcs is in love with its path handling code which I refactored as part of the patches that moved to new hashed-storage.
17:40 mornfall In retrospect, I don't know. Review was stuck, I was frustrated, tried to plow ahead despite that and failed to convince powers that be about the advantages of moving forward.

17:43 mornfall And I can't help but think darcs is slumbering, even trivial fixes for substantial bugs are being ignored.
17:46 carter mornfall it would be easier if it was on github :/
17:46 carter i don't mean to be ironic sounding
17:46 carter but the collaboration tooling helps
17:46 mornfall maybe
17:46 carter even if it was sort of a mirror for patches to be migrated over
17:46 int-e how is darcsden doing?
17:47 mornfall although I'd say an active maintainer would be much more useful
17:47 carter there isn't?
17:47 mornfall don't know
17:48 carter i thought ekowey and some others work on it
17:49 mornfall I don't think kowey is active anymore.
17:49 carter oh
18:11 sm Heffalump has been our de facto lead maintainer for a while I think
18:13 sm other recently active committers are people like gh, jlneder, owst, markstos, Sebasitan Fischer, galbolle and (from gsoc) Aditya
18:13 sm kowey is mostly elsewhere this year
18:14 sm hub.darcs.net is trying to help our tooling and workflow situation
18:14 sm but I think we're not really making use of it
18:18 sm I guess the bottom line is no-one is sufficiently motivated/funded to do more than we're currently seeing. But I feel we could make better use of the energy that we do have available. Our processes are cumbersome and more suited to a larger project. Am I wrong ?
18:21 mornfall Don't know.
18:22 sm or perhaps better to say: since it's a VCS we do need a conservative style; still, our processes could be streamlined
18:22 mornfall Seems that most users are resigned.
18:25 mornfall I have one project left with a darcs repo.
18:26 mornfall And I don't know what to think... I know enough about darcs to work around most bugs I run into.
18:27 sm or: users have moved on, accept that darcs is in legacy mode and adjust the project accordingly
18:27 mornfall so is darcs officially buried?
18:28 mornfall is there still a plan to make a release with rebase in it?
18:29 sm obviously not, this is just you and I discussing where we are
18:29 sm I'm just exploring possibilities
18:29 sm yes that release is definitely planned (speaking for Heffalump)
18:32 sm int-e: re your question, IMHO darcsden is doing rather well, and also could be doing a lot better
18:58 notdan Making webapps like darcsden or github might seem simple, but devil is in details.
19:14 notdan I still see people usinjust repos lying around in directories like on projects.haskell.org and community.haskell.org without any web interface, for example
19:14 notdan or they are using an external bug tracker like ndmitchell
19:16 Heffalump mornfall: I thought the basic problem was you and I couldn't agree on some fundamental property of your path refactoring, though I forget what that was
19:31 mornfall The only disagreement I think was about collapsing .. components.
19:33 mornfall And at that, only in pure code. I don't think the actual consequences would be significant.
19:36 mornfall Darcs before that did collapse .. and it still does, possibly more so since Darcs.Util.Path.
19:38 mornfall We did face a possible user-level regression in handling of ".." due to the changes. I guess.
19:39 mornfall notdan: well, darcs is using an external tracker, too :)
19:40 mornfall Although it's kind of rotten nowadays.

20:42 Heffalump mornfall: yeah, that sounds right. I don't think the discussion really concluded
20:43 javier_rooster joined #darcs
20:44 mornfall I guess the problem is that most energy in the system just dissipates in internal friction.
