13:52 haasn Hmm, one thing darcs doesn't seem to be very great at is ‘snapshotting’ files in time
13:52 haasn or, at least, darcshub

17:48 Guest49311 g'day all
17:48 Guest49311 woah
17:50 sm haasn: you're right, it's a pain. You have to adjust your desired time to the nearest exact patch time and get to that
17:50 sm or obliterate to that
17:51 haasn sm: well what I'd like is the ability to ‘permalink’ to files
17:51 haasn for example on github I can link to https://github.com/ekmett/lens/blob/f567f4a910e4113314a793d1d900552941b63dd2/lens.cabal
17:52 haasn and no matter how many updates are pushed to lens afterwards (assuming I don't destructively overwrite everything), that file will remain untouched
17:52 sm I agree, I don't think darcsden has that features yet
17:53 sm feature
17:53 sm but it's probably not that hard to add
17:53 haasn you think?
17:54 lelit joined #darcs
17:54 sm well, I haven't tried. Hopefully libdarcs has some api for it

18:12 sm gh_: are there any remaining knkown issues with the new patience diff ?
18:34 gh_ sm, known? no :-) what could leave to be desired would be performance, nonetheless
18:51 sm gh_: is it noticeably slower ?
18:53 gh_ noticeably no, but benchmarks reveal it can be twice as slow as the "classic" (Myers) diff  implementation of darcs (see http://bugs.darcs.net/file4446/scafell.html )
18:54 gh_ from <30 ms to 60ms in a 6000 lines file
18:55 gh_ the first implementation was slower, then Jose optimized it to get the current performance
18:57 sm I see. So slower, but not enough to notice, and generally more readable diffs
18:57 sm are there some examples of the diffs before and after ?
19:09 whaletechno joined #darcs
19:19 sm afk a bit.. thanks gh
19:29 gh_ sm, 3rd link in the mail I sent, Jose's blog post
19:37 gh_ which is http://blog.jlneder.com.ar/2013/07/patience-diff-algorithm-benefits-for.html
19:42 sm oh, great
19:47 sm I see, in the examples patience diff is much better at grouping hunks - the old diff fragments them quite a lot
19:49 mizu_no_oto joined #darcs
20:10 Heffalump it ought to be possible to permalink to lines in darcsden
20:11 Heffalump haasn: what do you mean by "that file will remain untouched"?
20:11 Heffalump that's the state of the file at a particular revision?
20:11 haasn Heffalump: yes
20:11 Heffalump ah, ok, that wasn't what I was thinking
20:12 Heffalump I thought it'd be useful to be able to identify a file or line of a file at a particular revision in a URL, but have the URL go to the latest version of that file/line
20:12 haasn for sake of example, I'd like to be able to look at a full version of Foo.hs /before/ a “rewrite Foo”-style patch got pushed
20:12 haasn without looking at the diff
20:12 haasn and trying to make sense of it :)
