22:16 blablubb why does darcs have dedicated tags? wouldn't it suffice to just record an ordinary patch, make it depend on all (or some) patches, and name it "TAG: foo"?

23:07 Heffalump blablubb: that's actually what the implementation is
23:08 Heffalump so there are two reasons to treat them specially: (1) is the user-interface, it's a useful shortcut [and we don't actually reveal the representation very explicitly], and (2) they provide a useful place to break inventories for optimisation purposes
23:09 blablubb Heffalump: regarding (2): is a tag still useful for optimization when it only depends on a subset of the current patches?
23:11 blablubb ... and is there a performance penalty when a large repo never uses tags?
23:39 Heffalump blablubb: depends if it gets reordered so that it's 'clean' or not. And yes, but probably only if you get to thousands of patches between tags.
23:41 blablubb Heffalump: thanks for clearing this up. the docs sometimes make it sound as if tags were somehow special patches, but i never read any specifics about that.
