18:13 gh_ hi
18:14 gh_ so I'm about to create branch-2.12
18:14 gh_ buut I'd like to have an opinion about the current patches to be reviewed
18:15 gh_ personally I'd make them all part of branch-2.12

18:58 * Heffalump does some quick review
18:59 gh_ :-)
19:02 Heffalump done - haven't pushed anything, just marked in the tracker
19:02 Heffalump and you'll need to review my 8.0 one
19:03 gh_ Heffalump, thanks!
19:06 gh_ I was going through "darcs help environment" .. do we still need DARCS_GET_FOO and DARCS_APPLY_FOO ? does this trick work well enough? the example given is with smb but one could just use fusesmb
19:17 Heffalump hmm, no idea - I've never used them
19:17 Heffalump but messing around with filesystems could be much harder
19:30 gh_ The current way seems quite hacky to me, and we're taking responsibility for reading any kind of URL with that.
19:32 gh_ I see that Mercurial only supports URL's of the form file:// , http(s):// and ssh://   . Git adds support for rsync:// (!)  , also ftp(s)://
19:44 gh_ I mentioned fusesmb out of analogy with sshfs.. but regular samba mounts exist since many years on Linux
19:47 gh_ riiight.. after installing ghc 8 I can't cabal-install a single thing
19:49 gh_ I'm too bleeding edge
19:58 Heffalump you might need --allow-newer
19:58 Heffalump oh, and you need a new cabal install, I forgot
19:58 Heffalump there's a link the ghc 8.0 rc2 announcement I think
19:59 gh_ oh thanks! stack was not helping either
20:21 gh_ good!
20:46 gh_ Heffalump, here's a patch that removes the DARCS_GET_FOO and DARCS_APPLY_FOO hacks: http://bugs.darcs.net/patch1490
20:49 gh_ haven't screened it,  but I'm inclined to include it in the 2.12 release
20:55 gh_ what do you think?
20:57 Heffalump don't people at least use DARCS_GET_HTTP etc?
20:58 Heffalump I don't see any rush to do this - why not wait for 2.14 and decide more carefully?
21:01 gh_ well is see some mails from 2005 on the mailing-list
21:02 gh_ (I'm not sarcastic!)
21:02 Heffalump I get about 8 results for DARCS_APPLY_HTTP
21:06 gh_ I see only failed attempts really, or people that have half-working hacks and then never seem to improve them (eg https://www.mail-archive.com/darcs-devel@darcs.net/msg01284.html  https://lists.debian.org/debian-haskell/2013/07/msg00016.html  )
21:06 gh_ I think we really need some kind og HTTP push/apply but somethink that would be natively supported
21:06 gh_ *of
21:07 gh_ and reliable
21:08 gh_ and now that these environment variables are in the manual (since 2.10), I'm more afraid of new people that would start using them
21:09 Heffalump I don't feel too strongly
21:09 Heffalump I imagine we could put them back in a point release if anyone screamed
21:10 gh_ and I don't know how much time will pass between 2.12 and 2.14
21:11 gh_ yes, I'm open to this
21:48 gh_ I'm going to way for a few days before screening it or pushing it to the release branch
21:48 gh_ *wait
