00:05 Devon http://darcs.net/_register says "Ask on #darcs for the wiki account creation secret"
00:12 sm Devon: yes, I'm sorry nobody who remembers the secret is on just now
00:12 sm you need that only for editing wiki pages
00:14 Devon Is that all?  Bah, who needs it.
00:53 Devon Emacs darcsum is a total lose so far - in a buffer I want to add, M-x darcsum-add RET errs.

01:10 sm Devon: it's unmaintained, and relies on darcs CLI which changes over time

12:30 kmicu Oh my, is my darcs not properly packaged or maybe darcs does not like nonASCII file names ('darcs add ś.txt' → 'File ś.txt does not exist'.)

14:59 Devon CLI?  Yechh!  Is there a darcs API?
15:11 sm Devon: there is. It changes more than the cli :)
15:12 sm however, as a matter of practicality - I think most of darcsum does work, and it's pretty useful
15:13 sm if the CLI is not enough for you
15:36 sm kmicu: good question. I see the same
15:37 sm with darcs 2.10.3. darcs 2.8.4 gives no error.
15:38 sm which version is yours ?
15:40 kmicu sm: I am on 2.12.5. Thank you for the confirmation.
15:43 Devon A glance at darcsum.el leaves me in the dark as to what it might be good for.
15:44 Devon I expected that if I run a command named `darcsum-add' in a buffer, it'd add that buffer's file and if I ran it in a dired buffer, it'd add the selected file.
15:45 sm kmicu: the issue tracker or mail list should know more
15:45 Devon I also glanced at those.
15:45 sm Devon, did you see "darcsum is an emacs add-on providing a more efficient user interface for the darcs revision control system, in the style of pcl-cvs or magit. It's great for reviewing and selectively recording pending changes."
15:46 Devon Couldn't make heads nor tails of that.
15:46 sm ok, fair enough
15:46 sm have you used any version control system UI in emacs before ?
15:48 kmicu sm: now that I know my system/locale is not to blame I will do exactly that.
15:48 Devon C-x v v is about all I ever tried.
15:49 sm Devon: ok.. it's like that but there's more of a ui, where you run most commands. I see that darcsum-add is one of the commands run from that UI, not from a regular buffer
15:49 sm M-x darcsum-whatsnew is how to start that UI. (I have it bound to C-x v d, here)
15:50 sm you tell it a directory containing a darcs reop
15:50 sm repo
15:50 sm in which there should be some unrecorded changes, otherwise it won't bother showing the UI
15:50 Devon Yeah, first thing I tried was M-x darcsum-whatsnew
15:51 sm and darcsum-add is called when you press a in that UI. I forget how it works though
15:52 Devon Then I tried a for add, which erred, no "new entries" lol, how would I add one?
15:53 sm that's what I forget. I think you need to get non-revision-controlled files showing up in the UI, and maybe this is toggleable
15:53 sm C-u g seems to show more things
15:54 Devon I can hear cavernous echoes down this particular rabbit hole and I've sworn off emacs hackery until my top two projects are demoable.
15:54 sm yes. then a changes a "New" file to "Added". Like doing "darcs add FILE" on CLI
15:54 sm heheh
15:55 Devon There's some other darcs.el thingy I haven't tried yet.
15:55 sm vc-darcs.el. It's more like standard vc. Broken for me
15:55 sm good for committing the single file you're working on, only
15:58 sm which I think you can't do with darcsum. Good to have both available
15:59 Devon Clearly underhacked, must resist temptation!  I did break training to add irc hooks that light up my caps lock LED when rcirc-activity is non-nil.  In practice, it's a bit disturbing, I'll probably stick to the mode line.
16:00 sm ah, well that was clearly stop-everything essential :)
16:00 Devon lol
16:06 Devon A better use for that LED would be an occasional reminder to look out the window, stretch, drink water.
16:06 sm indeed!
16:06 sm I've used timers & chimes for that
16:08 sm a keyboard administering electric shocks would be good
