19:35 moritz_ timbunce: ping
19:45 timbunce moritz_: hi
19:46 moritz_ timbunce: I saw you plan to attend YAPC::EU - do you already know when you'll arrive?
19:46 timbunce Saturday afternoon.
19:47 moritz_ I'll arrive on Sunday afternoon
19:47 moritz_ other Perl 6 hackers on Monday
19:47 moritz_ and there's a hackathon or BOF planned for at least Tuesday
19:48 timbunce great. I'm looking forward to it.
19:48 moritz_ I'd also be open for a DBDI hackathon on Monday, if you are interested
19:49 moritz_ and the second thing I wanted to come up with: do you know how close java2perl is to actually run some code?
19:49 moritz_ some Perl 6 code, that is
19:49 timbunce yes, hopefully they'll be enough foundation for people to get their teeth into by then
19:51 timbunce java2perl6 *doesn't generate runnable code* all it does is generate role definitions that correspond with java classes/interfaces.
19:51 timbunce that much is about done.
19:52 timbunce The next step is to pick a few key JDBC classes and start fleshing out an implementation behind them
19:52 timbunce probably borrowing heavily from MiniDBI plus some open source JDBC driver frameworks
19:53 moritz_ any idea how much work that is until we can run a very simple query?
19:54 timbunce not much I think. A few days. Once that's working it'll be much easier to open up the work for others to contribute.
19:54 moritz_ ... which is my main motivation to ask
19:54 timbunce I'd *really* like to find some way to use the JDBC (java) test suite to test DBDI. That's an interesting challenge
19:55 moritz_ maybe you've noticed, I post weekly Perl 6 tasks on my blog, and people take them up willingly
19:56 moritz_ if some of it can be broken down in byte-sized, easy-to-understand tasks, I'm sure there'll be takers for it
19:56 timbunce great. Perhaps one should be "teach Tim perl6" :)
19:56 moritz_ and in some cases, some of the contributors have stayed, seeking challenges on their own
19:56 timbunce and Java :)
19:56 moritz_ at the hackathon, I can certainly help out with Perl 6 knowledge
19:58 timbunce Thanks. I think it'll pick up the basics pretty easily once I start having some actual perl6 code to develop. Then people can pick holes in it so I can learn some polish.
19:59 moritz_ yes, it's pretty easy to learn if you know some perl 5, and maybe other programming languages too
