23:28 pzbill Hi all - trying to find documentation or anyone's experience setting up Mirantis to use Xen hypervisor instead of KVM.
23:30 xdeller ehm, nobody did
23:31 xdeller by the way, why do you use Xen today instead of KVM?
23:32 pzbill All the nice scalable reasons mentioned here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/07/02/citrix_open_sources_xenserver_hypervisor/
23:33 xdeller so it is matter of orchestration for you, right?
23:34 xdeller not speaking as devil advocate, but Xen itself has almost nothing that can outperform KVM except ready-to-use API, just IMHO
23:34 pzbill the comparisons seem to show Xen managing quite a few more virtual cpus per VM
23:34 xdeller so I may suggest you to look to the Openstack+KVM pair, with same capabilities of management
23:35 pzbill issue is more job density, not orchestration
23:35 xdeller oh, very monstrous example below :)
23:36 xarses pzbill: I've seen some recent articles from September showing that KVM is the top performer
23:36 xarses looking for one of them again
23:36 xdeller do you really have such number of heads to run VM of?
23:36 xdeller and of course vCPU overcommit will do very bad in means of performance
23:36 pzbill ;-)  sweet dreams are made of this...
23:37 xdeller despite some very specific solutions KVM is outperforming Xen - scheduler, I/O overhead, memory compaction, etc..
23:38 xdeller resource granularity, storage backend support and so on
23:38 xdeller Xen is dying unfortunately
23:38 pzbill how do you reconcile the claims in the Register piece then?
23:38 xarses out of date?
23:39 pzbill :) - how about July 2013, and the release 1-2 months ago & shift in licensing didn't quite seem like death throes...
23:39 xdeller there is a couple of giants who still holding Xen on their shoulders, but it almost not developing today
23:41 xdeller the main pain is the scheduler, second one is the I/O performance
23:41 pzbill as long as a team of at least 5 is supporting it, doesn't matter to me. Mostly, I need to know how to install Mirantis to use Xen so we can do comparisons with KVM ourselves
23:42 xdeller unfortunately Mirantis` FUEL do not supporting xen installations
23:44 pzbill a pity
23:45 xdeller we depend on customer demands - nobody wants Xen installations today :)
23:49 pzbill Fuel can also help companies select which OpenStack components they would like to run.
23:49 pzbill The distribution also supports multiple hypervisors through plugins, including KVM, ESXi, and XenServer.
23:49 pzbill (from Register article in October)

02:40 tsduncan_ I am having trouble deploying Ubuntu Fuel 3.2.1 to hardware that requires the mptsas storage driver.  Aparently the Fuel install does not include it or does not identify that it needs to be installed.
02:41 Vidalinux do you mean the kernel module is not included?
02:41 tsduncan_ I believe that is the issue.
02:42 Vidalinux how do you know? what do you test or debug ?
02:45 Vidalinux [root@node-19 etc]# find /lib/modules/ -name "*mptsas*"
02:45 Vidalinux /lib/modules/2.6.32-358.118.1.openstack.el6.x86_64/kernel/drivers/message/fusion/mptsas.ko
02:45 Vidalinux it is there
02:45 tsduncan_ The Ubuntu install completes but then I get nothing but a blank screen after it reboots. I then reset the server and I get a grub menu. I chose the first option Ubuntu with Linux 3.8.0-31 and it says cannot find the root device
02:45 Vidalinux oh ok I'm using the centos installation
02:45 tsduncan_ Centos works fine
02:45 Vidalinux use centos instead ;)
02:45 Vidalinux is ubuntu fault
02:45 Vidalinux always unstable :P
02:45 tsduncan_ yeah. It probably is. I'll try installing generic Ubuntu 12.04.3 to see if it works
02:45 Vidalinux which one you try?
02:46 tsduncan_ I have tried Fuel 3.2.1 with Centos and that works.
02:47 tsduncan_ It looks like Fuel is using Ubuntu 12.04.3. I have successfully installed 12.04.1 on this system but not .3
02:51 Vidalinux maybe some ubuntu dev was drunk when compiling and packaging kernel for 12.04.3 then forgot to include the module ;)

10:46 stacker100 Hello! There is a problem in vmware provisioning? The deploy fails because VM's can't see each other. There are a Vswitch for each interface.

12:25 marcinkuzminski so i installed 3.2.1 from the google drive today, and now i'm getting in mcollective log: http://paste.openstack.org/show/54351/ any ideas ?
12:31 marcinkuzminski found this in rabbitmq logs: "no exchange 'mcollective_broadcast' in vhost 'mcollective'",
12:32 marcinkuzminski which points me to:https://bugs.launchpad.net/fuel/+bug/1252269
12:48 marcinkuzminski Grishkin: any ideas how to fix that bug manually on master ^^
12:53 Grishkin marcinkuzminski, you can run curl -i -u mcollective:marionette -H "content-type:application/json" -XPUT       -d'{"type":"topic","durable":true}' http://localhost:55672/api/exchanges/mcollective/mcollective_broadcast
12:54 Grishkin And then curl -i -u mcollective:marionette -H "content-type:application/json" -XPUT       -d'{"type":"direct","durable":true}' http://localhost:55672/api/exchanges/mcollective/mcollective_directed

12:54 marcinkuzminski Grishkin: worked thx ! you want any info from my server to help fixing this ? I'm getting this on each installation(on vmware)
12:57 Grishkin Thanks for asking, but I don't think it's necessary since this bug reproduces quite easily. But if you have an account on launchpad just check there that this bug affects you.

18:08 stacker100 hi
18:08 stacker100 there are something to take in a count when i perform a deploy with neutron? always end in failed state. The bridged interfaces don't work properly
18:08 stacker100 with nova network all works like a charm
18:09 stacker100 but deployments with neutron.... i cannot say the same
18:11 MiroslavAnashkin <stacker100>: Hi. Have you enabled promiscous mode=All VMs for the network interfaces, used by Neutron? I assume you use virtual machines.
18:12 stacker100 MiroslavAnashkin, hi MiroslavAnashkin! i use vmware
18:13 stacker100 MiroslavAnashkin, mmmm i'm going to see this
18:14 stacker100 MiroslavAnashkin, i need to enable this in all interfaces?
18:14 MiroslavAnashkin Neutron Havana requires promiscous mode ON. Grizzly had no such requirement.
18:14 MiroslavAnashkin Yes, for all, which are used by Neutron
18:14 stacker100 MiroslavAnashkin, ok i try it
18:15 stacker100 MiroslavAnashkin, i'm testing Grizzly neutron with VLAN and GRE
18:16 stacker100 MiroslavAnashkin, You know how i can try Havanna with Fuel? Upgrade packages after finish instalation?
18:18 stacker100 MiroslavAnashkin, Thanks for the info
18:21 MiroslavAnashkin Ah, sorry, we have not released Havana yet.
18:21 stacker100 MiroslavAnashkin, ok, no problem
18:22 MiroslavAnashkin But promisc mode is recommended anyway
18:25 stacker100 MiroslavAnashkin, i recently discover "Fuel" and i have for fun meanwhile Havana  is released
18:26 MiroslavAnashkin There is bug in Neutron + GRE. It may work extremely slow. https://bugs.launchpad.net/fuel/+bug/1256289

19:27 xarses stacker100: CentOS neutron VLAN will not work with vmxnet3 nic type
19:28 xarses stacker100: GRE performance will be very bad in QEMU emulated mode, if possible use nested KVM
19:29 xarses stacker100: for Neutron VLAN on vmware will also have problems with e1000 in 3.2
