15:07 krobzaur Hello all, where do fuel plugins fall in the deployment graph?
15:08 krobzaur To phrase the question better, where are they located in the deployment graph, and when are they deployed chronologically? How can I tell if a particular plugin is going to be deployed in the deployment process?
15:09 krobzaur I uninstalled and then reinstalled a plugin a that I want to use in an environment after that environment was created. I deployed that environment with the plugin enabled in the Web UI but it didn't end up getting installed
15:10 krobzaur And finally, is there anything I can do post-deployment (perhaps manually) to install that plugin?
15:21 evgenyl_ krobzaur: hi, what version of fuel do you use? And what is a "package_version" of your plugin?
15:22 krobzaur fuel 6.1. plugin elasticsearch_kibana 0.7.3 package version 2.0.0
15:23 krobzaur So i think the problem is the plugin id change when I reinstalled it
15:23 krobzaur it went from 12 - 13
15:23 krobzaur the web ui is still looking for a plugin with an id of 12, which no longer exists
15:24 krobzaur I checked the settings.yaml file, and the section corresponding to the elasticsearch_kibana plugin does indeed show a plugin id of 12
15:24 krobzaur Could I modify the settings.yaml file, upload it, and re-run the deploy task?
15:25 thumpba joined #fuel
15:27 evgenyl_ 1. deployment graph question, according to tasks in plugin, there are post deployment tasks which will be executed after main graph is finished https://github.com/openstack/fuel-plugin-elasticsearch-kibana/blob/0.7.3/tasks.yaml#L1-L40 , execution order is defined by postfix `/8100` or by specified order in the file. In the main graph task has only basic
15:27 evgenyl_ task, like network configuration https://github.com/openstack/fuel-plugin-elasticsearch-kibana/blob/0.7.3/deployment_tasks.yaml#L1-L14
15:28 evgenyl_ krobzaur: when you reinstall a plugin do you install the same version?
15:29 krobzaur Yeah I used the same .rpm and everything
15:30 krobzaur I was troubleshooting some timeout problems and figured I needed to rebuild/reinstall after modifying the tasks.yaml file
15:30 krobzaur I have since discovered that was unnecessary
15:34 krobzaur I didn't even end up rebuilding because the pre_build_hook executable isn't functioning properly

17:31 urthmover I have been tasked with creating a redundant openstack environment that utilizes docker containers.  I do not have physical machines, but I do have a vmware 5.5 environment that I intend to use for the controller and compute nodes.  I DO NOT have shell access to the vmware hosts though.  Should I select KVM or QEMU when creating the openstack environment?
17:33 asaprykin_ joined #fuel
17:33 championofcyrodi urthmover: is the vmware 5.5 environment a single server?
17:35 championofcyrodi KVM and QEMU is used to perform virtualization similar to VMware.  docker containerization is quite different if you intend to run your applications inside a container.
17:35 championofcyrodi Unless you are referring to running the core openstack components inside docker the way fuel does.
17:35 championofcyrodi (or did, last time i checked)
17:36 urthmover championofcyrodi: no...this is a hefty cluster
17:36 championofcyrodi so are you trying to use the docker driver as the hypervisor driver for nova compute?
17:36 urthmover I expect to create about 5 or 6 beefy vm's on vmware...and then create the openstack environment
17:37 championofcyrodi gotcha. and the openstack environment.... are you intending to run that inside docker?
17:37 championofcyrodi e.g. running neutron, mysql, rabbitmq inside containers...
17:37 urthmover I am trying to create a platform that can easily manage and provision docker and rkt  etc. containers.  if I can also deploy plain ole vm's that is a plus
17:37 championofcyrodi ah i see.
17:37 urthmover no I don't intend on running the openstack inside docker
17:38 urthmover unless there is a reason to embed everything so many times...
17:38 championofcyrodi sure... the containers can be easily exported, rolled back, etc...
17:39 championofcyrodi so you can automate the build of the openstack env. itself.
17:39 urthmover for the most part we have a bunch of web developers ...that demand root access to our big monolithic web servers....so we have decided to give them containers...and they can deal with the rest
17:39 championofcyrodi would be redundant though, as Mirantis provides this through their Fuel server, as well as a lot of other great things like PXE booting and mcollective.
17:39 championofcyrodi sounds good.
17:40 championofcyrodi i would just set up your traditional openstack env that you are comfortable with...
17:40 championofcyrodi then look at using the docker driver for nova.
17:40 urthmover championofcyrodi: in my case PXE booting isn't an option, since I'm on vmware...and dont' have shell access to the vmware 5.5 hosts
17:40 championofcyrodi https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Docker
17:40 championofcyrodi devstack might be a good choice
17:40 championofcyrodi https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Docker#Configure_DevStack_to_use_Nova-Docker
17:41 urthmover Is fuel capable of creating an openstack environment that is redundant.....I want the containers to be able to float between the compute nodes...and not be affected by a live migration of the compute nodes in the vmware environment
17:42 urthmover maybe you've already answered that..it seems :)
17:42 championofcyrodi well docker still needs to have a storage mechanism that is available to all the compute nodes. like ceph.
17:42 championofcyrodi otherwise the filesystem would need to migrate with it.
17:43 urthmover makes sense   so ceph is like gluster I guess
17:43 urthmover hopefully less error prone
17:43 urthmover :)
17:43 championofcyrodi heh. gluster is like the one distributed FS i have not yet touched.
17:43 championofcyrodi but probably similar
17:43 championofcyrodi i like ceph a lot and have seen entire disks fail w/o anyone being affected.
17:43 urthmover ok cool  I'll get going on fuel  and hopefully get to the docker driver for nova soon
17:44 urthmover thats really cool that ceph can take that kind of beating
17:44 championofcyrodi so fuel is a
17:44 championofcyrodi openstack deployer
17:44 championofcyrodi so it will configure everything for you... and could be challenging to upgrade the hypervisor driver
17:45 urthmover sounds like the perfect fit....my manager wants something right away....which is silly an unreasonable...but it sounds like fuel might just get me there quicker
17:45 championofcyrodi it will get openstack up quickly.
17:46 championofcyrodi but no free lunch on the docker integration... that will be manual.
17:46 urthmover championofcyrodi: perfect....if he has something to click on soon...then the heat is off ...companies are dumb
17:46 championofcyrodi i understand the unreasonable stuff from management. ;)
17:46 urthmover championofcyrodi: no prob I'll get my hands dirty on the containers part...probably best when it comes times to troubleshoot
17:47 championofcyrodi are you comfortable with neutron?
17:47 urthmover I've only read about it....haven't done anythign with it
17:48 urthmover neutron looks helpful though...I guess it will assist as container are deployed and removed
17:48 championofcyrodi it's a core component of openstack for virtual networking... and will likely be your crucible.  it was mine.
17:49 urthmover ok than...I won't gloss over that part
17:49 championofcyrodi Nova - Handles Provisioning of Instances (Using KVM, Qemu or Docker)
17:49 championofcyrodi Neutron - Handles provisioning of subnets, gateways, routers, etc.
17:50 championofcyrodi Cinder - Handles provisioning of storage, being gluster, ceph, LVM, etc.
17:50 championofcyrodi https://www.openstack.org/software/
17:50 championofcyrodi which is the 3 components in the first picture on that site
17:51 championofcyrodi your looking to switch the Compute's KVM/qemu with Docker.
17:52 championofcyrodi there are some other things like keystone that provide authentication and security APIs... but those 3 are your core pieces.
17:52 javeriak_ joined #fuel
17:52 urthmover so I've already forgotten.....was I supposed to use KVM and point it at the vmware hosts I create?  or use QEMU?  is there a performance difference?  Is there a you can/can't use these features unless you pick the other scenario?
17:52 urthmover championofcyrodi: I really appreciate all the information you are sharing right now btw.
17:55 championofcyrodi let's start from the top... VMware is used to provide VMs, and is generally referred to as a hypervisor.
17:55 championofcyrodi But it is a commercial product...
17:56 championofcyrodi QEMU and KVM are opensource hypervisors.
17:56 * urthmover nods
17:56 urthmover yep
17:56 championofcyrodi Openstack aimes to integrate hypervisors like QEMU, VMware, and KVM with a nice web UI so users can deploy their own VMs.
17:57 championofcyrodi hense IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service)
17:57 * urthmover nods more
17:57 championofcyrodi this creates a lot of different scenarios you could deploy with...
17:58 alrick joined #fuel
17:58 championofcyrodi if you already have VMware running... you could set up openstack to provision 'Instances' using VMware's vCenter, so that when a user spawns an instance, vCenter chooses a ESX server and deploys the VM for them.
17:58 championofcyrodi the machine that spawns the instance is the 'compute node'
17:59 urthmover championofcyrodi: unfortunately, I do not have shell access to the vcenter server so I don't think openstack will be able to talk directly to vmware in my case
17:59 championofcyrodi so you're stuck with using a VM to run openstack.  which is not entirely desirable.
17:59 urthmover championofcyrodi: unfortunately yes
17:59 championofcyrodi but if you use containers... you could get a lot more instances out of it
17:59 urthmover championofcyrodi: that is my hope
17:59 championofcyrodi since you wont need to bootstrap an entire operating system each time.
18:00 championofcyrodi so install Ubuntu on your VM or whatever... then install DevStack
18:00 championofcyrodi (which is like openstack, but not the same)
18:00 championofcyrodi then you should be able to configure your other 4 VMs to be 'compute nodes'
18:00 urthmover championofcyrodi: ok, but it's devstack an all in one thing?  maybe you can just add compute nodes to devstack
18:01 championofcyrodi in which containers can spawn in
18:01 urthmover championofcyrodi: AH ok
18:02 urthmover championofcyrodi: so do this  http://docs.openstack.org/developer/devstack/guides/multinode-lab.html
18:02 championofcyrodi Fuel uses PXE and cobbler to bootstrap compute nodes... cobbler supports some things like KOAN, but i don't think fuel does, so the fuel deployer would likely not give you the exact scenario you're looking for.
18:03 championofcyrodi yes that!
18:03 championofcyrodi i totally forgot about that article
18:03 urthmover perfect
18:04 urthmover it doesn't really mention ceph for the storage part....maybe I just kida bolt that one and add it as a storage option
18:04 urthmover kida=kinda
18:04 championofcyrodi the openstack architecture is loosely coupled through APIs
18:04 championofcyrodi so you can use ZFS, Ceph, NFS, whatever...
18:04 championofcyrodi which is nice, but makes failures and troubleshooting a real PITA
18:05 championofcyrodi reminds me of the old game "mouse trap"
18:05 urthmover championofcyrodi: cool...I've really enjoyed using ZFS locally on the handful of smartos servers that I built up and use here
18:06 urthmover we got rid of vmware internally and old parallels xserves andI put it all on smartos
18:07 championofcyrodi nice.  I need to get back to work profiling this video transcoder. I'd be curious to know how your docker implementation goes.
18:07 urthmover now if I can just get an easy way to have containers live internally on smartos or whatever....and push them out the the new openstack cluster...and even then on out to EC2 in a pinch..that would be nirvana
18:07 championofcyrodi docker registry
18:07 urthmover ok thanks a bunch championofcyrodi you rock
18:08 urthmover championofcyrodi: ok I'll read about docker registry...that sounds like it will assist no matter where the actual container lives
18:08 championofcyrodi yea.... like yum or apt
18:08 urthmover sweet
18:09 * urthmover needs everyone in the office to leave me alone for the rest of the week
18:09 urthmover later championofcyrodi
18:09 championofcyrodi later
18:10 urthmover championofcyrodi: btw  :(  http://neurogadget.com/2015/11/30/elder-scrolls-6-will-not-released-quite-soon-bethesda-focusing-fallout-4/20964
18:11 championofcyrodi i'm okay with that... FO4 is amazing too :)
18:12 championofcyrodi plus i need time to build a top notch rig to support the Oculus Rift dropping 1st Quarty 2016
18:12 championofcyrodi because it's not gaming unless your foaming at the mouth from a seizure.
18:14 urthmover championofcyrodi: HAHA I haven't tried the rift.  My son and I have however pissed off the rest of our family sicking about 150 hours into FO4 between the both of us
18:14 urthmover sinking
18:15 urthmover anyway...gotta work

20:53 championofcyrodi TVR_: last i remember the dhcp agent was very 'dumb' does not integrate with DNS, so i always provided my own micro instance within a project using dnsmasq to provide name service lookups.
20:53 championofcyrodi wait...
20:54 championofcyrodi i think neutron sets the DNS as an attribute of the network
20:55 championofcyrodi might be in mysql but not actually have a CLI implementation yet.
20:55 championofcyrodi like the API supports it, but not the CLI.
20:55 championofcyrodi since i know you can set it in the network config using the horizon UI
20:56 championofcyrodi yea, it's specified when you create the subnet
20:56 championofcyrodi neutron subnet-create --dns-namservers 8.8.8.8 net0 10.0.0.0/24
20:56 championofcyrodi and mod them like, neutron subnet-update cae5afad-217c-4e8b-8413-cdbce5214a5d --dns-nameservers list=true 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
20:56 championofcyrodi https://ask.openstack.org/en/question/26278/neutron-dhcp-adding-dns/ (source)
20:58 championofcyrodi sorry, initially i was thinking you were referring to updating DNS using the dhcp server that comes w/ neutron.  like ddns
