00:19 Sunny Hi All, I am first time user of Jenkins and GIT
00:19 Sunny facing some issues with first build, anyone can help here?
00:20 mingrammer_ joined #git
00:20 Sunny Getting followin error
00:20 Sunny ERROR: Couldn't find any revision to build. Verify the repository and branch configuration for this job. Finished: FAILURE

00:24 kulelu88 Sunny: looks like it needs a verification step of some sort
00:24 kulelu88 the jenkins doc should be pretty detailed about that process
00:24 Sunny I do have the console logs, but unable to figure out from that
00:25 Sunny Here it is
00:25 kulelu88 probably not a good idea to share them in public either
00:25 Sunny Started by user anonymous Building in workspace C:\Projects\CERTIFICATION\SUNNY\JENKINS\jobs\HelloWorld\workspace Cloning the remote Git repository Cloning repository C:\Users\esisunn\.git  > C:\Program Files\Git\bin\git.exe init C:\Projects\CERTIFICATION\SUNNY\JENKINS\jobs\HelloWorld\workspace # timeout=10 Fetching upstream changes from C:\Users\esisunn\.git  > C:\Program Files\Git\bin\git.exe --version # timeout=10  > C:\Program Files
00:25 Sunny is there other way to share?
00:25 kulelu88 looks like it's a server timeout
00:26 kulelu88 although I'm not very familiar with windows and git functionality
00:26 Sunny server timeout, whic server are you talking about?
00:26 Sunny I am running jenkins within tomcat
00:26 Sunny and git has been added has plugin
00:26 kulelu88 # timeout=10 Fetching upstream changes from C:\Users\esisunn\.git
00:26 MistahKurtz joined #git
00:27 Sunny ok, in the beginning of the console logs it says
00:27 Sunny "Started by user anonymous"
00:27 Sunny could that be the reason of timeout
00:27 Sunny do I need to create or use some other user to make builds
00:28 kulelu88 where are you building from?
00:28 Sunny I am building it from JENKINS dashboard
00:29 kulelu88 no no, where is your git being called from? github or local or private git repo?
00:30 semantipc joined #git
00:30 Sunny Local
00:30 Sunny I gave following in Repository URL field
00:30 Sunny C:\Users\esisunn\.git
00:31 Sunny and I aded my .java file in that folder
00:31 kulelu88 I think the issue may be there
00:32 al-damiri joined #git
00:32 Sunny What do you think I should change?
00:34 Sunny is there a different format to specify URL or something else?
00:36 doppo joined #git
00:36 Sunny kulelu88
00:37 kulelu88 Sunny: it's tricky to say. maybe jenkins is looking for an HTTP URL instead. I would try asking in #jenkins
00:37 Sunny okies, thanks kule. Let me check in that channenel

00:52 alasi hi, when I list `git branch -a` from a cloned repo, not every branch is listed

00:54 alasi I cloned a repo from github, and the hosted repo (remote) has a bunch of branches on it. I want one to be on my machine, but git won't even recognize it when I run `git branch -a` kulelu88

00:56 kulelu88 alasi: fetch the upstream (my noob suggestion)
00:57 alasi kulelu88: tried that I think. Again, my computer wont even realize there are upstream branches besides master
00:57 kulelu88 alasi: let me fetch my notes for you for getting upstream
00:58 kulelu88 alasi: https://pastee.org/822ah
00:59 kulelu88 ignore the (1) and (2) don't enter those
00:59 rgrinberg joined #git
00:59 alasi I cloned directly from github, so the remote's already there :(. Thanks though kulelu88
01:00 kulelu88 try switching branches alasi . you know how?
01:01 alasi yup, it just creates a new branch with no corresponding upstream

04:01 HedgeMage test1111: Don't.
04:01 HedgeMage test1111: it's cheap and easy to spin up really any POSIX-ish OS to do it, and you'll have far fewer headaches.
04:02 test1111 hello, Is there any pratical guide to set a git server on windows?
04:02 HedgeMage test1111: Repeating yourself is rude, please don't.  If someone else has an opinion, they'll chime in.
04:03 justanotheruser joined #git
04:03 * HedgeMage won't advocate stuff like that, being an infosec nerd for a living and having to clean up the messes of people who do it.
04:03 test1111 Why do not. I have only one machine and it comes with windows. Sorry the interenet slow, I got response after typing in the message.
04:04 cyan__ joined #git
04:04 HedgeMage test1111: Because code integrity matters.  The skill it takes to meaningfully secure a windows server is high enough that anyone posessing it has more profitable ways to spend their time in all but the most absurd circumstances.  I'm tired of auditing code for back doors because the developers' server got owned.
04:05 HedgeMage Hint: it's impossible to find everything.

04:08 test1111 I see what you mean. I will setup a virtual machine to do it. I am new to git. If you have a guide to setup a git server on Linux, that would help a lot. thanks

I have a branch with conflicts and I'm not really sure how to "rebase", because I read about it and it seems that git rebase master would apply my changes to master, but then again - I'm working with a branch, not with master to pull changes. Is there some next step or something? O.o

14:48 notfrosty Hey. I wanna push a repo to github but some of the files are >100mb. I did rm -r the dir but github still refuses my commits. I guess it's because the files are still present in the history. What do ?
14:49 selckin !rewrite
14:49 gitinfo Rewriting public history is not recommended. Everyone who has pulled the old history will have to do work (and you'll have to tell them to), so it's infinitely better to just move on. If you must, you can use `git push --force-with-lease <remote> <branch>` to force (and the remote may reject that, anyway). See http://goo.gl/waqum
14:49 selckin !filter
14:49 gitinfo [!filters] Filters can be very useful for automatically making changes to files at checkout(smudge) and checkin/add(clean). See 'man gitattributes' for more information
14:49 selckin !filter-branch
14:51 selckin !filter-sensitive
14:51 selckin !filter_sensitive
14:51 gitinfo You can use filter-branch to remove sensitive data from a repository's history. https://help.github.com/articles/remove-sensitive-data/
14:51 notfrosty I got it thanks. I don't care about others since I know I'm the only one working on it.

21:40 Umeaboy Hi!
21:40 i7c Hi!
21:40 Umeaboy I have a script where I have added the line git config --global user.name "Add your name here", but I want to change it so that git asks what name to add to git and so forth.
21:40 clemf_ joined #git
21:41 Umeaboy How can I do that?
21:41 boshhead joined #git
21:41 boshhead joined #git
21:42 jast depends on your scripting language, and maybe you should learn that language a little more ;)
21:42 Umeaboy I'm making an automated script that prompts the user for specific needed settings so that he/she/heshe can add that in the terminal when prompted.
21:42 qsx Umeaboy: “they”
21:43 jast qsx: too easy, rejected
21:43 qsx jast: up the shut fuck :Þ

21:43 Umeaboy jast: Yeah, but it's jus this line that I need changed.
21:43 jast qsx: words up are your mixed

21:43 qsx jast: yoda i imitate
21:43 jast ... and it still depends on your scripting language

21:44 Robdgreat I thought git already informed you when name isn't set and told you how to remedy it
21:45 jast sure
21:45 jast this is apparently an attempt to automate stuff with some minor interactivity... why not
21:46 jast qsx: I'm fairly sure yoda uses different language
21:46 Robdgreat I think he doesn't simply scramble his words

21:47 jast I agree
21:48 jast he just puts the subject and predicate at the end instead of at the beginning of the sentence

22:05 hhee i want to save my credential on file git config --global credential.helper 'store --file ~/.my-credentials' then i type - git credential fill
22:05 qsx jast: if you come over just for that …
22:05 Umeaboy I could add a note in the README.md about adding the proper credentials thou.
22:05 jast I've got some here, and they may, in fact, be no more than a few years over the BBD
22:05 hhee but - credential didn't save

22:09 jast hhee: I believe "git credential fill" doesn't actually store, just prompt and output the complete data. to store, try 'git credential approve' (and use the input format described in the last section in the manpage).
22:10 hhee jast, cool i'll try :) thx
22:10 jast you can probably feed the output of 'git credential fill' to 'git credential approve'

22:22 hhee there is nothing about it
22:23 jast well, you could just run a git command that uses SSH transport... then the credential helper should automatically store things correctly after you're prompted
22:23 hhee jast, try several times - not save

23:51 MrJones ok google completely fails me on this:
23:52 MrJones how do I use a merge strategy on a file *after* the merge command with no special strategy argument has resulted in conflicts?
23:52 MrJones I see the conflicts now, I want to resolve them per-file with theirs or ours without going manually through the markers
23:52 MrJones surely there is a way to do that?
23:52 kadoban MrJones: Perhaps you're looking for 'git checkout --theirs -- the_file' or --ours, whichever.
23:53 ajf- joined #git
23:53 MrJones ah yes, that seems to have worked. thanks :)
23:54 MrJones somehow everything on google seems to assume you either specified the merge strategy right with "git merge" already (who does that before knowing the conflicts?) or that you want to always go through all the markers manually... weird :D
23:55 kadoban Yeah, I never specify merge strategies. Per-file makes a lot more sense. Even the checkout commands are pretty often not what you want.
23:57 MrJones yea I mean I'd have to be a psychic to know the correct merge strategy before even initiating the merge attempt :D lol
23:57 MrJones dunno how all the internet sites assume that's a usual workflow

23:59 kadoban It's a pretty obscure usage of merge that usually means you're doing something wrong, IMO. But there are actual uses for it, I think ... not sure what though.
