00:50 workthrick hi, how can I find all commits that with a given message, even if they're not in the ancestry of HEAD? I have a commit that's been amended a couple times, and the version I actually have in my branch does not have all the changes I made
00:50 workthrick I know I've committed them though, because it was submitted for review with a diff that I expect
00:50 preaction look in the !reflog perhaps?
00:50 gitinfo The git reflog (`git log -g`) records the SHAs of your HEADs for 2+ weeks. `git checkout -b myrestore OLDSHA` and `git reset --hard OLDSHA` will relink to that state via a new and current branch respectively, see http://sethrobertson.github.com/GitFixUm/ for full details.  WARNING: reset --hard will trash any uncommitted changes!  Visualize with: gitk --all --date-order `git log -g --pretty=%H`
00:52 workthrick I looked at the reflog already, it doesn't have anything interesting, which is probably because I moved between feature branch, merge staging branch, and another staging branch in the lifetime of the change
00:52 workthrick the staging branches move fast, and the change is 3 weeks old
00:53 workthrick although I haven't looked at all their reflogs now I think of it

01:00 workthrick for future reference though, is there a way to go through all the commits in the repo, without regard for whether they're reachable from the current branch?

02:21 gitinfo [!mailing_list] The mailing list can be reached via git@vger.kernel.org. You don't need to subscribe to the list, you will always be put in cc on reply. Read archives at http://j.mp/gitlist
02:22 ojacobson getting it into contrib might be possible, if someone were willing to rewrite it in C or some other language already used in git proper.

07:36 gitinfo haclong: hi! I'd like to automatically welcome you to #git, a place full of helpful gits. Got a question? Just ask it — chances are someone will answer fairly soon. The topic has links with more information about git and this channel. NB. it can't hurt to do a backup (type !backup for help) before trying things out, especially if they involve dangerous keywords such as --hard, clean, --force/-f, rm and so on.
07:37 haclong thank you gitinfo
07:37 gitinfo haclong: you're welcome, but please note that I'm a bot. I'm not programmed to care.

07:38 haclong when i commit, how do i know the hook as been triggered properly ?
07:39 dreamyspell joined #git
07:39 haclong a continuous integration server should listen to that hook but nothing happen and i don't know if the hook has been triggered and the server is not responding or if the hook hasn't been triggered which explain why the server is not responding

17:10 psprint Git could be used for a kind of database? For example: store a set of files into object. Then store different set of files into other object with parent set. Create refs/heads for this. Log shows records. Checkout does access

17:16 ojacobson Sure, you could do that
17:16 ojacobson It'd be append-only, unless you were willing to tolerate rewrites - and the API sucks for that use case ;)
17:17 psprint ojacobson: yes append only, not following the rewrites however

18:49 jpleau hi, what would be the reason I would get "fatal: Unable to find remote helper for 'ssh'" ? I am running git on debian using the packages, version 2.9.3
18:50 bremner what is your URL ?

18:53 thiago what did you run?
18:53 jpleau the url is ssh://git.debian.org/git/pkg-lua/lua-nvim.git , I tried "git push alioth master"
18:54 jpleau it has always worked before, git wasn't updated since last time that I used this repo
18:54 jpleau well that is wrong, it did get updated, but other repos work wine
18:54 bremner jpleau: that url works here.
18:54 jpleau fine*
18:55 bremner (I happen to have ssh login to that host)
18:55 jpleau bremner: I can't push to any of my repos anymore, nor clone anymore. Something's wrong with git on my desktop
18:55 thiago do you have ssh installed?
18:55 jpleau Yep, I am talking through ssh right now :)
18:56 jpleau bremner: are you on unstable?
18:56 thiago please rerun with GIT_TRACE=1
18:56 bremner testing
18:56 bremner jpleau: same version of git though.
18:57 jpleau uh. Now it works, I did not do anything

19:15 sartan Hey guys! i'm working on a project with a vagrant file that i need to modify myself, but without having to really communicate those changes back to git.  what i want git to do is 'ignore' this file entirely, and pretend it's always being checked out properly, and never modified.  id on't want to modify upstream .gitignore - is git update-index --assume-unchanged the right way to go?
19:15 sartan i have to tweak a few nerd knobs to make it work in my development environment, and it's extremely tiring to stash and pop hundreds of times in a day

19:22 preaction RedNifre: clone it and then add the bitbucket as a remote (git remote add <name> <url>) then push it to that remote (git push <remote> <branch>)

19:36 isemenov_away good evening
19:36 isemenov_away i'm looking for help with rebase
19:36 isemenov hopefully what i want to achieve is possible
19:36 isemenov i have two branches, eigen and transfer
19:37 isemenov eigen has a few commits that are newer than the last commits in transfer
19:37 isemenov i want those commits to be present in transfer as well, but so that eigen stays as it is
19:37 isemenov i havent' been able to find a combo of rebase --interactive options that could do this
19:37 isemenov is it possible?

19:38 benny joined #git
19:39 benny is there an easy way to amend something other than HEAD?
19:39 isemenov judging by the web articles, i should go to transfer and do git rebase -i eigen
19:39 isemenov but it results in eigen being modified, not transfer
19:40 pneuma joined #git
19:40 liefer joined #git
19:41 RedNifre isemenov Not sure I understand your problem but couldn't you just checkout transfer and either merge or rebase eigen? This shouldn't change the eigen branch, I think.
19:41 e14 joined #git
19:41 isemenov RedNifre: what is the exact order?
19:42 isemenov go to transfer and rebase -i eigen?>
19:42 tgummerer benny: git commit --fixup <hash of commit you want to fix up> and then git rebase -i --autosquash is the easiest way I can think of
19:42 isemenov RedNifre: tried, it wants to move commits from transfer to eigen that way!
19:43 ki0 joined #git
19:43 sartan any replies here to my wish to make a file invisible & immutable by git?
19:44 sartan i want to maintain local chagnes to a file and not have to deal with checkout/push/pull conflicts
19:44 tgummerer isemenov: you'd have the commits that are different in transfer on top of the commits in eigen then, but still on the transfer brach I think
19:45 everamzah joined #git
19:45 tgummerer otherwise the best way I can think of would be to cherry-pick the new commits on eigen onto transfer

19:50 tgummerer sartan: I can't think of a good way to do this, but !assume_unchanged is probably not what you want
19:50 gitinfo sartan: git update-index --assume-unchanged is sometimes suggested for keeping yourself from committing changes to a file, but it's actually a promise to Git that the file is identical to the committed version, to reduce unnecessary disk reads. Not only will Git feel free to discard the flag, it will also happily overwrite your changes whenever a checkout/merge/rebase/... updates it.

19:53 benny tgummerer: that worked great, thanks
19:53 tgummerer sartan: maybe --skip-worktree would be better suited for this, though I don't know too much about it
19:53 tgummerer benny: np
19:53 sartan I'll mess with it.  I did have some changes overwritten oddly with assume unchanged
19:54 sartan seems to protect you from a push rather than a pull
19:54 sartan with lots of git flow / branching going on it was getting a bit 'bizzare'
19:55 tgummerer sartan: yeah --assume-unchanged was introduced to help with big repositories so git doesn't need to go in there and check for changes if you promised not to change those files
19:55 tgummerer so it's a promise to git rather than something that would help you
19:56 tgummerer the bizzareness is not unexpected there :)
