01:28 Vampire0 [snake], from a quick look that redhat bug looks to me like a simple misconfiguration of systemd for running git daemon on redhat systems. That does not mean that Git has any problems here.
01:28 [snake] Vampire0, oh that's good.
01:28 Vampire0 [snake], you want me to google for you for finding a tutorial?
01:28 Vampire0 [snake], do you think I have some time to waste?
01:29 [snake] Vampire0, no don't worry about it.
01:29 Vampire0 ok, fine :-)
01:31 Vampire0 [snake], I googled anyway the words "git daemon systemd" and the first hit gives you a Gist of the three files that you need for systemd usage of git daemon. Not too hard to find

01:46 [R] lets say I fork a project, and I make some commits to it, and then there is a new version, and i want to update to taht, but have all my commits show up newest in the log, but also be able to go back to an old version... is there a git workflow for something liek that?
01:48 Vampire0 [R],  do you mean man git rebase?
01:48 gitinfo [R]: the git-rebase manpage is available at http://jk.gs/git-rebase.html
01:49 [R] but if i just rebase, than i'll lose my history won't i?

01:53 nedbat [R]: rebase won't change the number of commits, or their comments, etc.
01:53 [R] lets say my upstream is at 1.0, and i have 10 commits... i want to go to 1.1, so i rebase, and now i'm at 1.1 with my commits
01:54 [R] but now lets say i want to go back to 1.0 with my commits the way they were
01:54 overlord_tm joined #git
01:56 nedbat [R]: you have a few options: 1) create a branch from HEAD now, and keep the branch. you can always go back to it. 2) rebase back and forth as you need to.
01:57 eka joined #git
01:57 [R] so HEAD is at 1.0, i create a branch, do some commits, HEAD is now at 1.1, create a new branch, and then merge from my previous branch to the new branch?
01:57 [R] master HEAD*
01:58 nedbat [R]: how did HEAD get to 1.1? You pulled from origin?
01:59 [R] yeah
02:01 Vampire0 [R], you can rebase back and fokth as nedbat suggested, or you can have a custom-1.0 and a custom-1.1 branch and have your commits duplicated in both for fast switching back and forth, then just man git cherry-pick
02:01 gitinfo [R]: the git-cherry-pick manpage is available at http://jk.gs/git-cherry-pick.html
02:02 Vampire0 to copy the commits from one branch to the other
02:03 [R] hrm... what about merging from custom-1.0 to custom-1.1?

04:16 amanuel2 Basically my question is , some people are saying not to put my arch's in branches when i am developing an os. And others don't have anything to say(neutral) . Should i continue separating the branch or not?  It seems like a wise thing to do in my point of view , since i dont have to create many directories for each architecture
04:16 [R] amanuel2: what?
04:17 amanuel2 https://github.com/Bone-Project/BoneOS
04:17 einnjo joined #git
04:17 amanuel2 Look at my github ^^ . You can see it is seperated into branches for each arch's
04:17 amanuel2 some people say i should just forget that and stick to normal method of separating them by directories. Im asking here well should i?
04:18 [R] of course you should separate it by directories
04:18 [R] what if you want to have common code
04:20 amanuel2 [R] : Hmm , first logical statement against my reason. Well seems your right
04:20 amanuel2 Thanks for your time :)

04:49 badfeeling !backup
04:49 gitinfo Worried about your data while trying stuff out in your repo? The repository in its entirety lives inside the .git directory in the root of your work tree so to backup everything `cp -a path/to/workdir path/to/backup` or equivalent will suffice as long as the repo is not modified during backup. 12:22 bjornar_ The same way git submodule status doe

13:29 daveklein hello all.  I have what's probably a stupid question.  If I do a git log, and checkout the latest commit using it's hash, it tells me I go into 'detached head' state.
13:29 daveklein But in the log, it has just told me that the HEAD is at the latest commit
13:30 daveklein i can 'reattach' the head by doing a git checkout master
13:30 daveklein and I can can get a clue of what's going on using git symbolic-ref HEAD
13:31 todd_dsm joined #git
13:31 selckin notting you said sounds wrong
13:31 selckin whats the problem
13:32 daveklein so am I right in saying that by checking out any commit using a hash, git effectively deletes the symbolic reference between HEAD and the hash
13:32 Balliad joined #git
13:32 daveklein i.e. that 'detached head' basically just means that HEAD doesn't point to anything at the moment
13:33 daveklein (I'm trying to learn git you see!)
13:33 selckin yes
13:33 bremner !detached
13:33 gitinfo A detached HEAD(aka "no branch") occurs when your HEAD does not point at a branch. New commits will NOT be added to any branch, and can easily be !lost. This can happen if you a) check out a tag, remote tracking branch, or SHA; or b) if you are in a submodule; or you are in the middle of a c) am or d) rebase that is stuck/conflicted. See !reattach

13:34 daveklein ok - thanks.  it just initially struck me as odd that checking out the latest commit by hash had any effect at all
13:34 daveklein (assuming that i hadn't edited or staged anything since the last commit)
13:34 bremner yes, it's the difference between 'master' and 'the commit pointed to by master'
13:35 bremner which is a bit subtle, I grant you
13:35 daveklein yep - thanks, that's a good way of describing it - and it's these subtleties i'm trying to understand so I really 'get' what going on!

19:28 moritz docmax: if it was tracked before, and deleted upstream, git will also delete it locally after a git pull
19:29 docmax the file was deleted locally
19:29 docmax i expected a "git pull" will restore the file
19:29 pikajude if it was deleted in a new commit it won't
19:30 docmax i didnt commit anything...
19:30 docmax i did a "git clone"
19:30 docmax then deleted 1 file locally. now i want it back
19:30 a3Dman joined #git
19:30 moritz git checkout thefile
19:30 moritz gives you back the file
19:31 moritz if you want to get your local changes to the remote repo, you need to create a commit and push
19:31 docmax can i make it restole multiple files?

23:27 maroloccio hi. how can i git log some_branch ^my_branch and view commits that some_branch has which i don't have yet with the _requirement_ that i can skip diffs which are basically "the same" in content but perhaps differ in sha1?
