00:00 bremner vacho: you need to get support from your OS vendor / distro support forum
00:01 bremner I'm guessing the correct answer to that question is "step away from the keyboard before you break something badly"

00:14 Maskettaman hey guys
00:14 gitinfo Maskettaman: hi! I'd like to automatically welcome you to #git, a place full of helpful gits. Got a question? Just ask it — chances are someone will answer fairly soon. The topic has links with more information about git and this channel. NB. it can't hurt to do a backup (type !backup for help) before trying things out, especially if they involve dangerous keywords such as --hard, clean, --force/-f, rm and so on.
00:15 Maskettaman quick question. Why does `git clone --recursive --quiet https://github.com/example/example.git $HOME/.example 2>/dev/null` still give output
00:15 Maskettaman writing an installer script and even with all that I keep getting output :/

07:09 pix9 flks I am trying to automate one of my scripts, where It is required by script to make initial commit of several files, I was thinking of putting git-username / pass in my script., kindly suggest. any other better approach. to get this done.
07:10 gabrielschulhof pix9: If you need to provide authentication for pushing, doing by public key is better than storing passwords.
07:11 pix9 gabrielschulhof but username and password would be used from multiple locations.
07:11 pix9 let's see 100+ servers/
07:11 pix9 and multiple scripts.
07:12 pix9 let me see what I can do about it.
07:12 gabrielschulhof So put the public key on those 100 servers and from then on you can get in without typing a password.
07:12 pix9 hmm
07:14 gabrielschulhof pix9: At first glance this seems like a good guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH/OpenSSH/Keys - except that you probably want an empty passphrase.
07:14 gabrielschulhof ... and then access to the filesystem alone keeps your private key safe.
07:14 pix9 thanks gabrielschulhof
07:15 Tobbi joined #git
07:16 gabrielschulhof pix9: Though having a passphrase is not so bad on a desktop, because with a decent desktop environment you have ssh-agent which will ask for your passphrase only once and then store it until you log out.
07:16 arch-nemesis ssh pub key in ldap
07:17 pix9 gabrielschulhof I will try out multiple approaches, will try to chose safest and then simplest.
07:17 pix9 don't have ldap
07:17 arch-nemesis Technically, ssh can use any command to verify the key
07:18 gabrielschulhof pix9: If you're logging into the server over ssh then the public key approach is safe and convenient, even with a passphrase.
07:18 j08nY joined #git
07:18 pix9 script will mostlikely run loccally
07:18 pix9 can be called via ssh thoe
07:19 arch-nemesis I've never seen this, but you could set the AuthorizedKeysCommand in sshd_config to get the public key.
07:20 arch-nemesis it is a public key, after all. Safe to put anywhere.

Maybe by "git gc" on the server? I have seen that getting the kernel form "https://kernel.googlesource.com" it just says: "remote: Counting objects: 18521, done"

11:54 osse Probably because you also pushed the backup reference that filter-branch creates
11:54 nO_OnE probably
11:54 nO_OnE that doesnt explain though, why my two branches, dev and master, which were one line with different heads are now two branches
11:54 osse But do they rewritten branches look OK?
11:55 nO_OnE I dont know, I have like two branches now, which are complete copies of eachother. Dev and master. Only dev has two additional commits

12:00 nO_OnE is there an easy fix?
12:00 nO_OnE .. or a hard one?
12:00 osse nO_OnE: git filter-branch creates a couple of new "branches" named refs/original/refs/heads/master etc.
12:00 nO_OnE I really need this repo intact

12:01 osse most likely everything's fine and you're just confused by the graph

12:01 nO_OnE * dev

16:12 snowkidind If I wanted to install a git server on a raspberry pi to share a project among my computers in my LAN privately, what software is pretty good for that these days?
16:12 _ikke_ snowkidind: if you don't need a web interface: !gitolite
16:12 gitinfo snowkidind: Gitolite is a tool to host git repos on a server. It features fine-grained access control, custom hooks, and can be installed without root.
