02:04 johnmark howdy, y'all
02:04 hagarth johnmark: doing good, howdy?
02:05 johnmark hagarth: I'm well :)
02:05 johnmark just got back from another trip to the bay area
02:05 johnmark ok, at least 3 people said they would be here... we'll wait for a bit
02:05 hagarth johnmark: ok
02:06 johnmark hagarth: what holiday was it yesterday?
02:06 hagarth johnmark: labor day in India
02:07 johnmark hagarth: ah, so may day, just like in the EU?
02:08 * johnmark wonders why the rest of the world seems to all celebrate labor on the same day
02:08 hagarth johnmark: yeah
02:10 johnmark anyway... I need to find someone to lead a test day, because I'm not going to have much time betwen now and rhsummit
02:10 johnmark jbrooks: ping
02:10 johnmark ^^^
02:12 avati hey guys
02:13 johnmark avati: howdy
02:13 hagarth johnmark: right, my schedule also looks tight for the next 2 weeks
02:13 johnmark hagarth: I'm going to try to loop in jbrooks for that - or jclift
02:13 hagarth johnmark: ok
02:14 johnmark but anyhoo
02:14 avati reached westford just now
02:14 johnmark avati: oh! you're here?
02:14 * jclift has little interest
02:14 johnmark I also flew in this afternoon
02:14 jclift Kind of buried in other stuff atm
02:14 johnmark jclift: heh... I suspected as much
02:14 johnmark jclift: besides, you're doing cool stuff
02:15 johnmark but we have to find someone :/
02:15 jclift Brain in knee deep in a few different things already.  Leary of adding another one unless I have to. ;)
02:15 jclift s/in/is/
02:15 johnmark jclift: I hear ya
02:15 johnmark hagarth: ok...
02:15 johnmark avati: how long ar eyou here?
02:16 johnmark hagarth: I haven't looked at the tracking bug. how is it looking?
02:16 * johnmark searches bugzilla
02:17 hagarth johnmark: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=952693 - a few bugs to be addressed
02:17 glusterbot Bug 952693: unspecified, unspecified, ---, vbellur, NEW , 3.4 Beta1 Tracker
02:17 jclift Hmmm, was it a holiday here yesterday?
02:17 jclift Oops
02:18 hagarth rdma - am waiting for a patch refresh. op-version support needs to be backported to release-3.4.
02:19 johnmark hagarth: ok, didn't realize op version support hadn't been backported
02:19 hagarth johnmark: I think we need to set a date for beta.
02:20 johnmark hagarth: that dependency tree looks manageable
02:20 johnmark hagarth: ok. just to get something out there?
02:21 johnmark hagarth: when you say waiting for a patch refresh for rdma, you mean someone is submitting a new one? or backporting one?
02:21 * jclift just noticed a bunch of the BZ for 3.4 are RDMA related.  Sounds like RDMA support might be a bit more solid for 3.4 that previous then.
02:21 hagarth johnmark: yeah, a date driven approach is what I am considering.
02:22 johnmark jclift: that's the plan
02:22 hagarth johnmark: yeah, raghavendra is working on submitting a new one. After that gets into master, we will need to backport it.
02:22 johnmark it's also why it's taken a bit longer
02:22 johnmark hagarth: ah, ok
02:22 hagarth jclift: will you be interested in giving it a spin after the patches are in?
02:22 jclift hagarth: Definitely
02:22 johnmark hagarth: without the new patch, does RDMA still mostly work?
02:23 jclift hagarth: I find that breaking Gluster (using rdma) is pretty trivial every time I look at it
02:23 johnmark :)
02:23 jclift i.e. complete volume loss sometimes, where Gluster just "forgets" a volume exists
02:23 jclift (seriously not good)
02:23 hagarth johnmark: I tend to agree with jclift in the absence of the new patch.
02:23 jclift So, hadn't been really looking at it hard.
02:23 johnmark jclift: then I'll peg you for testing RDMA :)
02:23 jclift :)
02:23 johnmark hagarth: ok.
02:23 johnmark jclift: have you done any testing with the 3.4 tree?
02:24 johnmark hagarth: then if we set a date next week for the beta, say Tuesday
02:24 johnmark and the patch isn't in, we'll just have to list it under "known issues"
02:24 hagarth johnmark: right
02:24 jclift Played around with it a bit about 2 weeks ago.  Stupidly bad perf problems and worse (ie complete volume loss).
02:24 johnmark jclift: which version?
02:24 hagarth jclift: I'll see if I can provide you a build/tree with the newer patches in.
02:24 jclift git head
02:24 jclift i.e. 3.5 dev
02:25 johnmark jclift: oh oh ok
02:25 jclift yeah, didn't really look into it much at the time, as I had other things (like now) I'm supposed to be focusing on.
02:25 johnmark hagarth: ok, so are you ok with Tuesday?
02:25 hagarth jclift, johnmark: stabilizing rdma in a parallel tree (with testing) and then getting into mainline is something that I am considering.
02:25 jclift Hoped it was just transient master branch breakage, etc. ;)
02:25 johnmark hagarth: ok
02:26 johnmark jclift: as do I
02:26 hagarth johnmark: sounds good to me.
02:26 johnmark hagarth: we should try ou tparallel trees on the forge
02:26 johnmark I'm going to annoy everyone with my pleas to "stick it on teh forge"
02:26 johnmark heh
02:26 jclift hagarth: Oh... I'm flying back to Aust either end of this week, or early next week, so I can pick up some documents.  Will need to take time off around then due to need to fly large distances with 0 internet connectivity.
02:26 jclift Not sure of exact days yet tho. :(
02:26 johnmark but in all seriousness, I'd love to see parallel trees from you and avati for people ot try out
02:27 hagarth johnmark: yeah, that does sound like a good idea to me.
02:27 johnmark hagarth: ok
02:27 hagarth jclift: no problem. I'll get the process started, think there are a few more folks in the community who would like to give rdma a spin. Will reach out to them as well.
02:28 jclift hagarth: Cool.
02:28 johnmark anyway, putting beta release on Tueday, 24-hour testin gimmediately after
02:28 johnmark hagarth: any other pressing dev issues besides RDMA?
02:28 jclift hagarth: At the moment, my rdma gear is just 2 DDR nodes cabled directly together.  Can run the rdma code, but not really do much for scalability testing, etc. ;)
02:28 jclift Just saying.
02:28 hagarth johnmark: the op-version backport
02:29 hagarth jclift: that does look like an awesome test setup to me (as I don't have any) ;)
02:29 johnmark hagarth: right. is it difficult to backport?
02:29 hagarth johnmark: should not be. will check with Amar on that.
02:29 jclift hagarth: If you have boxes with PCIe slots, we can find IB cards with minimal effort to put in them.  Also "just saying". ;)
02:30 johnmark hagarth: what about the glusterd issues you guys were working on?
02:31 hagarth jclift: the problem is in finding a dedicated system .. anyway I am working on that.
02:31 hagarth johnmark: most glusterd issues have been addressed
02:32 johnmark hagarth: ok. if I recall, the quesiton was whether to delay part of it until the next release
02:32 jclift hagarth: Grab me after you finish here, and we can quickly see if there's a way to get you access to more stuff?
02:32 johnmark jclift: you have a solution for that? cool. I didn't know you had access to such things
02:32 johnmark or maybe you told me, but that was several beers ago
02:33 jclift I think outside of the box.  So, as long as people don't always look too closely, beneficial things can be made to happen.
02:33 * jclift hums and looks innocent
02:33 hagarth johnmark: apart from an odd issue or two, we should be fine with glusterd for now.
02:33 johnmark hagarth: ok, fair enough
02:33 johnmark I have everything I need.
02:33 hagarth jclift: sure.
02:34 johnmark jclift: :)
02:34 johnmark niiiice
02:34 johnmark jclift: apologize after the fact, never ask permission - my kind of guy
02:35 jclift Yeah, some stuff I ask questions for (ie when learning ropes of new system).  Other stuff... not so much. ;)
02:35 jclift hagarth: First question, just so I have a better idea... do you work from office or from home?
02:35 vshankar joined #gluster-dev
02:36 hagarth jclift: from office.
02:36 jclift k.
02:36 jclift hagarth: Is your office the kind of place you can stick two low profile desktop pc's under your desk or something, and people wouldn't care?
02:37 jclift i.e. have you own "test lab" type of stuff, instead of using a shared one?
02:37 jclift Some places don't care, some places care about that a lot. :/
02:38 hagarth jclift: I am not too sure about that one, my hunch is that we fall under the latter category :|
02:38 jclift Heh, working from home has some advantages there.  ;)
02:38 hagarth jclift: undoubtedly ;)
02:39 jclift k, different tactic.  Do you ever use the QA boxes that have IB gear in them?
02:39 jclift kkeithley pointed out in email a while back that QA has 4 x hosts with IB connectivity and an IB switch.
02:39 jclift So, non-optimal in that it's a QA system, but at least it might be workable.
02:40 hagarth jclift: yeah, usually we loan it from QA but cannot keep it forever.
02:40 jclift k.
02:40 hagarth jclift: I am interested in checking the setup that kkeithley has.
02:40 jclift hagarth: The other thought is... is there rack space or something in your office that can be used, if new systems can be located/found/etc?
02:41 hagarth jclift: I am not sure if it is currently put to use, I'll check that over with the QA team today.
02:41 hagarth jclift: that is certainly doable.
02:41 jclift hagarth: Sorry for asking pedantic questions.  Obviously just trying to find any gaps/opportunties in possibility that could be found.
02:41 jclift hagarth: k
02:42 johnmark jclift: I have two boxes I can stick somewhere
02:42 johnmark jclift: is it as simple as getting a card?
02:42 johnmark they're cheap-o lenovo boxes - but they'll work
02:42 jclift johnmark: IB stuff is very simple to physically put together.
02:42 johnmark jclift: huh, ok
02:42 hagarth johnmark: we need to kickstart documentation for 3.4 too
02:43 johnmark hagarth: does everyone who wants to use rdma stuff with GlusterFS use IB specifically?
02:43 johnmark hagarth: good point. there is much to do :(
02:43 jclift johnmark: Well, for simple setups. ;)  IB cards just need a PCIe x8 slot in each box.
02:43 johnmark ok
02:43 hagarth johnmark: yeah
02:43 johnmark ok
02:43 * jclift was going to write up an "How to use Gluster with RDMA" type of post
02:43 jclift But, then I tried it and it broke everywhere.
02:43 jclift So, didn't bother pursuing it.
02:44 johnmark jclift: I'm going to look into getting a couple of cards
02:44 johnmark how much do they cost? mellanox sells them, right?
02:44 jclift johnmark: Do _not_ buy them retail or anything.
02:44 johnmark jclift: ha, ok. no no, I'll try to use our relationship with mellanox
02:44 hagarth johnmark: I can evolve release notes for 3.4. The problem is with getting admin guide 3.4 ready.
02:44 johnmark hagarth: ok. then we need to enlist the help of divya and team
02:45 jclift johnmark: If that doesn't work, I can them from eBay for trivial sums.
02:45 johnmark jclift: ah, cool. ok
02:45 jclift Well, trivial is about US$75 each
02:45 jclift As long as mgr approves, RH even pays for it.
02:45 johnmark jclift: oh, super trivial
02:45 johnmark jclift: I'm sure I can get approval
02:45 jclift Cables are around $US14.00 each too, etc.
02:45 jclift Yeah, Carl already signed off on mine, etc.
02:45 hagarth johnmark: not sure if divya and team have the cycles for this.
02:45 johnmark nice...
02:46 johnmark hagarth: ok. hmmm... what is their main focus right now? rhs 2.1?
02:46 johnmark hagarth: because there should be some overlap there
02:46 johnmark and by "some" I mean "a lot"
02:47 hagarth johnmark: yeah, the schedules are not the same though.
02:47 johnmark hagarth: ok
02:47 hagarth johnmark: this is something for which we need to find a permanent solution.
02:48 johnmark hagarth: good idea. any recommendations? :)
02:48 johnmark hagarth: I'm going to see Rich tomorrow. I'll make sure to bring this up, because you're right - it's painful at the moment
02:48 johnmark and has been for a while
02:49 hagarth johnmark: host the admin guide as a repo on forge and evolve a lightweight process for the community to contribute?
02:49 johnmark hagarth: that's what I'm shooting for - converting it to markdown + asciidoc, pushing it into the docs repo, and editing it that way
02:50 johnmark hagarth: but this is not a tools problem. this is a resources problem
02:50 hagarth johnmark: I think it is a combination of both. kind of chicken and egg too.
02:50 johnmark hagarth: ok.
02:51 johnmark so I ported all of our web docs to the gluster-docs project in asciidoc
02:51 johnmark and I can do the same with the admin + install guide
02:52 johnmark hmm... but I need the sources for the admin guide
02:52 johnmark hagarth: do you know where I can fetch them? Or do I need to request it?
02:52 hagarth johnmark: I think that would be great. If we can add a howto on editing files in that repo, I believe there will be traction.
02:52 johnmark hagarth: then I'll make sure to get that squared away before the beta release next week
02:53 hagarth johnmark: the doc folder in glusterfs root has some sources. would that do for you?
02:53 jclift johnmark: k, get 2 of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111049480964  and 2 of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251200441924  Do a "best offer" for the cables.  The guy accepts $14.00 per cable.
02:54 johnmark hagarth: are they current? for some reason, I thought they were out-of-date
02:54 johnmark hagarth: checking...
02:54 johnmark jclift: thanks for the tip
02:54 jclift np
02:54 hagarth johnmark: I don't think we have (m)any updates since then.
02:55 hagarth jclift: i will also check with kkeithley and others on owing the IB setup till we GA 3.4.
02:56 jclift hagarth: Good idea. :)
02:56 hagarth s/owing/owning/
02:57 jclift hagarth: kkeithley mentioned something a while ago about us having IB equipment, but it having been lent to another group because people are waiting to move to another office or something and there's no space in the present one
02:57 johnmark hagarth: ok, will take the XML docs in the admin guide and put in the docs project
02:57 jclift (that's my memory of the description.. unsure how accurate)
02:57 hagarth jclift: ah ok
02:57 hagarth johnmark: cool
02:57 johnmark jclift: I don't understand why it's taken us so effing long to get QA equipment
02:57 jclift hagarth: That *could* present an opportunity too, in that "get gear back from other group, plug it into lab somewhere" type of thing.
02:58 johnmark seems like that would be the first order of business
02:58 jclift johnmark: I don't really consider IB to be QA specific gear
02:58 jclift Our coders should have this stuff on their desk
02:58 hagarth johnmark: yeah.
02:59 jclift How the f**k are our guys supposed to code high performance solutions when they're using 1 GbE gear and can't try different code paths out easily?  Like serious wtf? :D
02:59 johnmark :)
02:59 jclift :)
03:00 johnmark jclift: I don't mean for QA testers specifically, I mean any hardware that lets us do the job we're supposed to do
03:00 jclift Agreed
03:00 * jclift gets off high horse
03:00 johnmark Ok, I'm off to bed. until tomorrow
03:00 jclift 'nite dude :)
03:00 johnmark later :)
03:00 hagarth 'nite johnmark.
03:01 johnmark hagarth: good morning :)  talk to you soon
03:01 hagarth johnmark: sure, will sync up with you in your morning on the shanghai plans.
03:03 jclift Ahhhh, I wondered where on the new forge site the gluster wiki docs ended up.
03:03 * jclift will need to look into that in near future
03:03 jclift "gluster-docs project" <-- from backchat
03:03 hagarth jclift: https://forge.gluster.org/gluster-docs-project
03:03 jclift Interesting.
03:03 jclift hagarth: Excellent, thanks.

11:52 kkeithley jclift: FYI, the BAGL cluster has both 10G network gear and IB. The HekaFS cluster has 10G gear, the gqaib-xx machines have 10G network and IB. There is all the gear from the old Sunnyvale office, which probably includes some 10G and IB, but nowhere to set it up until we move into the new space, which could be as soon as June or July IIRC.
