01:55 johnmark kkeithley_: thanks for doing the math :)
01:56 kkeithley_ doing the math?
01:56 bala joined #gluster-dev
01:57 kkeithley_ oh, IST? I found a web site
01:57 johnmark yeah. I could have looked at google calendar, but bah..
01:58 portante joined #gluster-dev
02:00 johnmark ahora!
02:00 johnmark oh hey, I'm on F19
02:00 johnmark hagarth__: ping
02:01 johnmark avati: ping
02:01 kkeithley_ glutton for punishment?
02:01 johnmark apparently :)
02:01 kkeithley_ oh, you did it to get the oVirt integration
02:01 kkeithley_ how did that go?
02:01 johnmark I haven't done that part yet
02:02 johnmark but the upgrade process is... always interesting
02:02 johnmark at least this time I deidn't have to blow the partition and install from scratch
02:02 kkeithley_ I did do a f19beta install in a vm; clean install though
02:03 johnmark ah right... that's the easy way!
02:03 kkeithley_ I have yet to see a linux upgrade that I liked or trusted
02:03 johnmark (and smarter)
02:03 johnmark ubuntu does a great job of it, frankly
02:03 johnmark but that's from its debian roots, which was always designed to be "install once, update everywhere"
02:04 johnmark meh
02:04 * johnmark will be back
02:04 hagarth joined #gluster-dev
02:08 hagarth johnmark: hey there
02:08 johnmark hagarth: howdy
02:08 johnmark how are we on existing bugs?
02:09 johnmark and should I add "docs" to the bugs list
02:10 hagarth johnmark: more testing necessary and a cpl of minor fixes.
02:10 hagarth I sent a patch to convert all our existing documentation to markdown yesterday.
02:11 hagarth markdown is easier to edit than xml - we should work on this for 3.4 documentation.
02:11 johnmark hagarth: ah. agreed. so it's converted?
02:12 * johnmark looks up patch
02:12 hagarth johnmark: yeah, I took whatever was available in the repo and converted it to markdown - http://review.gluster.org/#/c/5232/
02:12 kkeithley_ Is anyone going to review the glusterfs.spec.in changes, or do we not care about that so much?
02:13 johnmark hagarth: did you use pandoc?
02:14 johnmark kkeithley_: it just needs review? what needs to be done in the review? make sure the rpm builds?
02:14 hagarth kkeithley_: that is on my radar for review
02:14 hagarth johnmark: yes, I used pandoc.
02:16 johnmark hagarth: what testing do we need, specifically?
02:17 johnmark hagarth: also, how do I checkout your docs patches?
02:17 kkeithley_ johnmark: the verification already proved that the rpm builds. I'd like buy-in for glusterfs-api-devel versus the api header and lib symlink in glusterfs-devel. Buy-in on adding the glusterd.service for systemd. Thoughts about using the fedora glusterfsd.{init, service) or dropping it from fedora, etc.
02:17 hagarth johnmark: some more glusterd and rdma tests.
02:17 johnmark the command as listed doesn't work
02:17 johnmark kkeithley_: got it. ok
02:17 hagarth johnmark: this should work - git fetch http://review.gluster.org/glusterfs refs/changes/32/5232/1 && git checkout FETCH_HEAD
02:18 johnmark hagarth: how can we script these out for testing?
02:18 johnmark hagarth: are any of hte predefined tests adequate for this? Or should we define more?
02:19 hagarth johnmark: we need more tests for this. the regression tests are mostly single node tests. we need to build an actual cluster and test.
02:20 johnmark ok
02:20 * johnmark wonders what the solution here is
02:20 johnmark because I don't like hte idea of waiting for a lab to materialize
02:21 hagarth johnmark: do we have any community gear at all?
02:21 johnmark hagarth: RDMA? or IB? maybe - paging jclift
02:21 jclift ?
02:22 johnmark hahaha
02:22 johnmark jclift: do you have IB gear? RDMA?
02:22 kkeithley_ we do have the heka cluster which is largely unused. we also have the four node gqaib cluster which has melanox IB and a melanox switch
02:22 jclift Yep
02:22 johnmark jclift: shouldn't hyou be asleep?
02:22 jclift Yep
02:22 johnmark cool
02:22 johnmark kkeithley_: ok
02:22 johnmark then we should be able to arrange for some testing this week, yes?
02:23 hagarth johnmark: think so
02:23 johnmark coo
02:23 jclift You know... we have XXX "test days".  eg for Fedora, Gluster in general, etc.
02:23 johnmark yeah. we can arrange for another one
02:23 jclift Maybe we should have an "RDMA Test Day" for Gluster
02:23 johnmark jclift: oh right - except focus specifically on RDMA
02:23 jclift Seeing as like... pretty much everyone on IRC seems to use/try RDMA
02:24 jclift And it's super common for the mailing list users too
02:24 johnmark heh... yeah
02:24 hagarth jclift: +1 for  rdma test day.
02:25 jclift hagarth: Do we have a scripted set of things we'd like people to try out with RDMA specifically?
02:25 johnmark jclift: yeah. was wondering that, too
02:26 jclift Asking that because people are generally good following a decent % of instructions, if we give them the said instructions to follow
02:26 hagarth jclift: we can put together a sanity script that runs well known tests like iozone, dbench et al after creating a volume over rdma.
02:26 jclift That's one way of doing it... I was more thinking some like this (give me a sec to find the url):
02:27 johnmark jclift: yup
02:27 bala joined #gluster-dev
02:27 jclift hagarth: So, with the Fedora 19 test day for Virt, they had this: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2013-05-28_Virtualization#Areas_to_test
02:28 jclift That's "Areas to test".  When drilling into it, they ask people to try out specific operations on their gear.
02:28 hagarth the other thing to do is have glusterfs-tests like xfstests as a separate repo (which I will get to some day).
02:28 jclift For example (with the F19 virt test day), they asked people to do basic stuff like "create a vm with virt-manager", and more advanced stuff like "live migrate a vm from one host to another using virt-manager"
02:28 hagarth jclift, johnmark: any curators for a similar page on Gluster?
02:29 jclift Eco maybe?
02:29 hagarth jclift: I think this is a great idea. We can almost do s/vm/volume/ ;).
02:29 hagarth at least the lifecycle tests.
02:29 johnmark heh ehh :)
02:29 johnmark yeah
02:29 johnmark ok, let me see who I can enlist
02:30 johnmark preferably someone who has a good idea of what they would want ot see out of rdma transport
02:30 hagarth johnmark: let us get this ready in the next 24 hours :)
02:30 johnmark yes :)
02:30 johnmark hagarth: and what about glusterd?
02:30 johnmark what kind of testing  can we do for that?
02:30 hagarth johnmark: if volume lifecycle operations work fine over a cluster, I think we are mostly good with glusterd.
02:30 jclift hagarth: Yep, for an RDMA test day, we'd ask people to do stuff like a) create RDMA volumes for each of replica 2, stripe 2, distributed 2 (etc), b) Do various option setting on the volumes and confirm they take effect when tested, etc.
02:31 johnmark hagarth: ok
02:31 johnmark ok, then
02:31 johnmark Thursday or Friday can be RDMA test day
02:32 johnmark will prepare the test machine
02:32 hagarth jclift, johnmark: how about "follow the sun" model for developing this page? I take the first bait here, jclift can add more tests and somebody on the other side of atlantic completes the page!
02:32 jclift hagarth: Are there any specific "new features" for 3.4 that we want people to test out as well?
02:33 jclift johnmark: Will that give us enough time to prep for what we want, then get volunteers?
02:33 hagarth jclift: yes - ACLs over NFS, rdma-cm, qemu + samba with libgfapi, op-version in glusterd amongst others.
02:33 johnmark indeed
02:33 jclift johnmark: Once we have the tests we want laid out, we should tweet/blog/email (external and internal RH) to get people involved where possible
02:33 johnmark yup yup
02:33 johnmark realistically, I think we can do this on Friday
02:34 jclift hagarth: We're going to need to write up exact instructions we want people to follow for these new features. :)
02:34 jclift Them being new and all... we prob don't have stuff written up yet.  Just saying. ;)
02:34 johnmark true true
02:35 johnmark jclift: anyhoo...
02:35 hagarth jclift: yes, that was one of the intentions behind my markdown patchset yesterday. I am eager to get some documentation collaboration going for 3.4.
02:35 johnmark a lot of those new feature sare not particular to RDMA
02:35 jclift k.  /me will stop side tracking the conversations atm :)
02:35 jclift hagarth: Yeah, I think that patch set is a very good idea
02:36 hagarth kparthas over here is eagerly waiting for that patchset to be pushed.
02:36 johnmark gooooooooooooooooolllllll USA!!!!
02:36 johnmark sorry... anyway
02:36 jclift If we can get those .md files and stuff them into the Gitorious wiki somehow, we'd have live editing of out admin guide available for people
02:36 johnmark hagarth: oh good
02:36 jclift s/out/our/
02:36 bharata joined #gluster-dev
02:37 hagarth pandoc does md to mediawiki conversion. Is Gitorious wiki a mediawiki instance?
02:37 jclift hagarth: Unfortunately I don't remember.  I've been ignoring Gitorious
02:37 jclift ... Eco knows though
02:37 johnmark hagarth: no. it uses markdown
02:37 jclift Sweet
02:38 johnmark yup
02:38 * jclift is very tired
02:38 johnmark jclift: go to sleep :P
02:38 jclift So, take what I say with large grains of salt
02:38 jclift Sure, in a bit
02:38 johnmark hagarth: do I need to download hte docs into an existing local git repo?
02:39 johnmark because every time I try, I get "fatal: Not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git
02:39 johnmark "
02:39 hagarth johnmark: yeah, you can download that to an existing local glusterfs repo.
02:39 johnmark ok
02:39 johnmark will try existing master branch
02:40 johnmark hagarth: ok, cool. got it now
02:41 * johnmark will push it into gluster-docs-project
02:41 hagarth johnmark: we can keep it as part of glusterfs repo only.
02:42 johnmark hagarth: I suppose
02:42 hagarth i mean the docs - easier to track/request doc changes during review of code.
02:42 johnmark ah, ok
02:44 johnmark alrighty then. we know what we need to do
02:44 johnmark jclift, me and ecotech will work on this tomorrow
02:44 hagarth johnmark: sounds good.
02:44 johnmark as in, we'll work on RDMA testing day
02:44 johnmark hagarth: thanks!
02:47 johnmark ok guys, good night
02:47 hagarth johnmark: good night

10:23 krishnan_p mohankumar, pong
10:24 mohankumar krishnan_p: regarding the gluster cli --remote-host, i am assuming ipv4 address for localhost 127.0.0.*
10:24 mohankumar but what about ipv6? have you tested gluster multi cluster setup with ipv6?
10:26 krishnan_p No, I haven't tested it with ipv6 addr
10:27 mohankumar krishnan_p: usually ipv6 address for lo is ::1, so it will be ::2, ::3 etc for multi cluster setup in ipv6
10:27 mohankumar and how to handle this case for filtering --remote-host use
10:28 krishnan_p i would think we could have the security checks for ipv4 addresses to begin with
10:29 krishnan_p And later fix the issue for ipv6. That way this patch is not blocked.
10:29 mohankumar krishnan_p: yeah i was also about to suggest same thing
10:29 mohankumar i am doing some basic tests and will post the patch after test completion
10:30 krishnan_p mohankumar, that will be great
