12:19 ndevos kkeithley1: it seems that glusterfs-server now depends on glusterfs-geo-replication, should those packages get merged or should we fix that (auto generated?) requires?
12:20 ndevos is there a good reason to keep them apart?
12:20 kkeithley fix the autogen requires
12:21 kkeithley Let me see if I can dig up the email that said they should be separate
12:21 ndevos thanks, some reasoning would be good to have
12:21 kkeithley and then we can ask whether it still makes sense or not

12:38 kkeithley There was a longish thread titled RPM re-structuring in gluster-devel starting on 28 July 2013 where we discussed this. Looks like "we" had already split out -geo-replication in Fedora and were about to do it in upstream. If I'm reading things correctly it was because geo-rep is/was python and it looks like we wanted to eliminate the python dependency on the main glusterfs package
12:38 edward1 joined #gluster-dev
12:38 kkeithley this was also around the time when f19 was getting ready to ship with libvirt/oVirt/vdsm built with gluster.
12:39 kkeithley ndevos: ^^^
12:41 ndevos I dont see a disadvantage on having a dependency on python, isnt that installed on all RPM distros by default?
12:45 kkeithley I don't know what gets installed by default. I'd have to dig through more emails to remember. But I do remember, without digging through old emails, that there was a lot of grousing about how big the main gluster package was, and we trimmed the docs/changelog, among other things.
12:45 kkeithley s/grousing/complaining/
12:51 ndevos kkeithley: right, it is good to not have geo-rep in the main glusterfs package, but I think it can be included in glusterfs-server so that we have fewer packages (glusterd seems to gain more geo-rep functionality anyway)
12:52 kkeithley yes, sorry, I meant glusterfs-server. regardless, the consensus on gluster-devel at the time was for geo-rep to be its own subpackage. Maybe we should revisit
12:54 ndevos 'consensus' in such a way that you proposed it and nobody objected :)
12:55 kkeithley lol
12:55 ppai joined #gluster-dev
12:56 kkeithley I'm happy to revisit the decision.
12:59 kkeithley and fortunately none of the geo-rep python is in %{python_sitelib}
12:59 kkeithley IIRC
13:12 kkeithley I made geo-rep a subpackage in Nov 2011 — in 3.2.4. Maybe that was a/an (misguided?) attempt to not have a dependency on python? I don't remember that far back. The "consensus" in the July discussion was to leave it that way. I don't think I have any particular reason for keeping it as a subpackage though. I'd be open to merging it back into glusterfs-server.
13:12 kkeithley I don't think I have any particular reason for keeping it as a subpackage though; if, as you say, python is installed by default anyway.
13:13 ndevos I'm for merging, it gets pulled in automatically now anyway
13:13 kkeithley okay, sounds good to me

16:08 jclift Jeez I hate the IRC client Empathy.
16:08 * jclift must find a new one in near future
16:09 jclift ndevos: That MAINTAINERS file looks very good. :D
16:10 ndevos jclift: hey, now I know how I should ping when I have a problem or question ;)
16:11 ndevos s/how/who/
16:11 jclift ?
16:12 ndevos and, use irssi for irc, who needs a gui if you can have it all in a terminal?
16:17 jclift ndevos: k, trying it now
16:18 jclift Completely over the bullshit known as empathy.  Doesn't show timestamps.  Drops me out of channels.  Leaves subprocesses running in memory after quitting (thus needing process killing).  Ridiculous. ;)
16:19 * ndevos runs irssi on a file-server in a screen session, it's probably easier than a bouncer/proxy like znc
16:20 jclift Yeah, I can prob do that too.
16:20 jclift Sounds minimal effort. :)
16:22 jclift ndevos: Side question.  Josh Boyer is building a scratch kernel with the ALPS patch here: http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=6374372  That's F20 though.  Any idea if F20 kernels will work "as is" on F19, or should I rebuild from the src.rpm ?
16:23 ndevos jclift: never tried a f20 kernel on f19, but I would guess it works
16:24 kkeithley jclift: be bold, fortune favors the bold
16:28 jclift kkeithley: Meh.  Fortune favours the bold who have backups.
16:29 jclift I'll give it a shot when that build finishes
16:31 kkeithley no guts no glory
17:18 jclift Looks like different format/expectations in rpm files with F20 now.  F19 yum barfs on F20 kernel package.  Oh well, I'll rebuild tomorrow. :)
