21:40 jclift kkeithley_: Interesting.  Have been knocking myself out for hours, trying to understand why what should be a simple test (eg for presence of centos_version) isn't working.
21:41 jclift kkeithley_: The very interesting thing is that after cracking the shits eventually, I just renamed the lengthy check to be checking for a non-existent variable 'weirdshithappening' and ... it still correctly built on CentOS 5.
21:41 jclift It's looking like the macros in our .spec file might not be working the way we think they are
21:44 jclift kkeithley_: Seeing mentions in external rpm mailing list conversation that the "0%{?rhel}" check should be "0%?{rhel}" instead (question mark in different spot).
21:45 jclift kkeithley_: And it looks like the {centos_version} macro is defined for the SuSE build service environment, and isn't part of CentOS builds
21:45 jclift eg the "it's now building on CentOS5" is side effect behaviour of some sort
21:45 * jclift needs to take a mental break now, but will figure this out after taht
21:46 jclift that
21:49 kkeithley_ weird
21:49 * jclift fully agrees
21:52 kkeithley_ some Fedora proven-packager tweaked the spec file recently (nothing related to this) and didn't say anything or do anything to those macros.
21:52 jclift A suggested workaround has been to call an external macro that figures out wtf version of os is running, and determine the centos version that way
21:53 jclift From that, we could define the rhel global appropriately
21:53 jclift kkeithley_: Interesting.  I might look him up and ask. :)
21:53 kkeithley_ what's external macro?
21:53 jclift Meh.  Sorry my bad working.  Completely mentally crapped out atm.
21:54 jclift "external program of some sort"
21:54 kkeithley_ ah
21:54 jclift eg create a macro which does whatever we need to grep /etc/redhat-release or some such
21:54 jclift But make it as robust as possible.  Hopefully there's a "keep it simple" approach
21:55 jclift Hmmm.
21:56 jclift Wonder if adding such a grep to the extras/LinuxRPM/Makefile.am would work?  That way the macro could be injected into the rpmbuild command directly by the Makefile in that dir
21:56 jclift Hmmm, might try that out
21:58 kkeithley_ Aren't rpm .spec files really just glorified bash scripts?  Or are they really something else?  If you 'export rhel=5` before invoking rpmbuild what happens?
21:59 jclift kkeithley_: Hmmm, I haven't really mentally pictured them that way.  Doesn't hurt to check.  I'll try that out. :)
22:00 kkeithley_ ugh, I have to install CentOS 5.0 and then update to 5.10? There's no 5.10 ISOs in vault.centos.org
22:01 kkeithley_ srsly?
22:01 kkeithley_ oh, 5.9 ISOs
22:02 kkeithley_ better, but not as nice as a 5.10 ISO
22:05 jclift Some of the mirrors definitely have 5.10 ISO's
22:05 jclift I downloaded 5.10 ISO's from a local mirror in the UK
22:06 jclift But yeah, checked the vault first too and noticed the same thing
22:06 jclift Btw, setting an exported rhel=5 in the build environment didn't seem to work
22:06 kkeithley_ darn
22:07 jclift Hmmm, actually, I set it in the shell environment directly
22:07 jclift Let me try setting it in the Makefile itself, before it calls the rpmbuild command
22:07 jclift 1 min
22:08 kkeithley_ oh good, found a 5.10 netinstall iso. much better.
22:08 jclift :)
22:09 jclift One side benefit from this adventure is that I finally got around to writing shell aliases for my otherwise length compilation and git manipulation sequences
22:09 jclift Been meaning to do that for a while
22:09 jclift s/length/lengthy/
22:09 jclift Nope, setting stuff in the environment definitely doesn't work
22:12 kkeithley_ the netinstall doesn't know where to get the rest of the bits from?
22:15 jclift Hmmm, that sounds weird.  I don't know what the limitations of EL5 netinstall are though
22:15 jclift I just downloaded the full fat ISO's as I know they work
22:16 kkeithley_ I don't want to wait two hours for a download.  I figured out where to point it for the stage2.img
22:16 kkeithley_ same mirror
22:16 jclift :)
