09:42 kshlm Hey!
09:44 Manikandan joined #gluster-dev
09:45 nbalacha kshlm, question on the new xlator option flags
09:45 nbalacha if I do not mark an option settable, can it be set internally? As in not via the cli?
09:46 nbalacha I'm assuming the flags should only hold for glusterd
09:46 itisravi joined #gluster-dev
09:46 kshlm You could.
09:46 nbalacha kshlm, ok. Because we use these values internally to control things in rebalance
09:46 nbalacha but they are not exposed to the user
09:47 kshlm The only way that you could, would be to manually edit volfile or to pass them using the command line --xlator-opt

11:20 devyani7 kshlm, ping, have a few minutes? had a query wrt validations.
11:20 kshlm devyani7, Yup
11:20 devyani7 kshlm, validating if the value is a valid string, can you share some examples of valid strings.
11:21 devyani7 didn't quite get help with the C code
11:21 devyani7 are we validating if its a valid option type?
11:22 kshlm Some options have a list of possible valid values.
11:22 devyani7 um, ok.
11:23 kshlm You need to verify if the value being validated is among the list.
11:23 pkalever1 joined #gluster-dev
11:24 kshlm It would be set as volume_option_t.value in C. It will be available to you as the slice Option.Value
11:24 * devyani7 tries to find the same.
11:25 devyani7 kshlm, thanks, checkin that.
11:25 devyani7 checking*
11:30 kshlm devyani7, For examples you can look at AFR. It has a few options which have a list of values. For eg. favorite-child-policy

17:38 ndevos is the crypt xlator still maintained and tested? OpenShift would like to use it through https://github.com/openshift/origin/issues/13013
17:44 msvbhat joined #gluster-dev
17:48 ndevos kkeithley, vbellur: do you know about the crypt xlator? ^
18:09 kkeithley ndevos: I know some history about it. That's about all
18:10 ndevos kkeithley: right, hardly maintained and of dubious functionality, I would say
18:11 kkeithley Hardly maintained is true. I don't think I'd necessarily agree that the functionality is dubious. There's a very specific use case for it.
18:12 ndevos well, yes, with loads of limitation when you enable it
18:12 ndevos "fragile" is probably better put
18:18 kkeithley It might be fair to say it never achieved production quality.
18:20 kkeithley If OpenShift just wants encryption at rest, why not use dmcrypt on the brick.
18:22 kkeithley The design center of the crypt xlator was to not require the keys be kept on the server.
18:25 kkeithley For the security paranoid, if the disks are confiscated, the keys to the data aren't resident anywhere on the server(s)
18:27 kkeithley OpenShift should use luks/dmcrypt on the bricks, unless they're paranoid.
18:56 msvbhat joined #gluster-dev
19:51 vbellur ndevos: I am thinking about reviving crypt :)
20:09 vbellur kkeithley: the advantage of crypt is that data cannot be stolen even with intruders on the storage servers. with dm-crypt, after the block devices are unlocked data is vulnerable.
20:10 kkeithley that's correct
20:10 vbellur kkeithley: an intruder might get frustrated and delete data though. crypt doesn't stop that :).
20:11 misc so crypt is like ecryptfs on remote storage ?
20:12 kkeithley dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdg bs=1G count=$bignum
20:14 vbellur misc: in a sense, yes. without the key used to encrypt the files, you would not be able to make sense of  file contents.
20:14 vbellur kkeithley: lol
20:15 vbellur misc: there is no namespace / directory encryption with crypt AFAIR.
20:19 misc vbellur: yeah, but that's done on a per brick basis, and in openshift, everybody get their own brick (I suppose) ?
20:26 vbellur misc: no, every tenant in openshift gets a gluster volume and crypt encrypts at a volume level.
20:30 misc vbellur: mhh, ok, I misunderstood volume and brick :/
