13:10 nangthang Hi. I'm a new user of GlusterFS and I have an issue that needs your suggestions
13:11 nangthang I'm wonderfing GlusterFS of GFS2 is suitable for the Zimbra Email Service
13:11 nangthang It is true that I deploy 2 Zimbra Server with GFS fs and had critical issues
13:12 nangthang MySQL service of Zimbra cannot start in GFS fs
13:13 nangthang My goal is to deploy a cluster/load balancing system for Zimbra
13:13 nangthang Can GlusterFS allows all nodes to have direct concurrent access to the same shared block storage?
13:14 nangthang any suggestion for me, many thanks

16:13 nangthang Hi. I have a confusion related to GlusterFS. I'm wondering that Can Can GlusterFS allows all nodes to have direct concurrent access to the same shared block storage like GFS2?

16:32 nangthang I know that glusterfs is file-based network storage, so it cannot have ability to allow all nodes to have direct concurrent access to the same shared block storage like GFS2, right?
16:32 nangthang GFS2 is designed to sole this issue, right?
16:37 hagarth nangthang: yes, GFS2 is the appropriate solution for this issue

16:44 nangthang thanks hagrth
16:44 nangthang but, I am having an issue rated to GFS2
16:45 nangthang I have 2 servers running Zimbra service and 2 servers are running on GFS2 fs
16:46 nangthang when service is started at both nodes, one MySQL service could not be started at both nodes
16:47 nangthang so I realized that to use GFS2 fs, it also depends on the service you attend to use, right?
16:47 nangthang for example, MySQL of Zimbra cannot be started on GFS2 fs
16:50 nangthang Apache can be used normally on GFS2 fs, so issue is related to MySQL of Zimbra, right hagarth?
16:51 hagarth nangthang: looks to be the case, but I am not very familiar with GFS2. I'm afraid I cannot be of much help on this one.
16:51 nangthang ok, hagarth
16:52 nangthang so, Can I use GlusterFS for Load Balancing purpose?
16:52 nangthang for example, my 2 Email Server use GlusterFS (replication mode) for LB?
16:55 nangthang Can 2 email servers use glusterfs (replication mode) for concurrent access to the same shared block storage like GFS2?
16:57 hagarth nangthang: GlusterFS is file based, it is unaware of the underlying block subsystem.
16:57 hagarth nangthang: reads of the same file from multiple clients can get load balanced with GlusterFS. Recommend testing your workload well before deploying in production. I occasionally hear complaints with dovecot & glusterfs but none of us have found time to dig into that one.
16:59 nangthang hagarth: glusterfs cannot write of the same file from multiple clients, right?
17:00 hagarth nangthang: not in a consistent way, unless application holds co-operative fcntl locks to ensure consistency.
17:01 nangthang i see
17:02 nangthang so GFS2 is the appropriate solution for my issue up to present, right?
17:06 hagarth nangthang: definitely looks like that
17:09 nangthang hagarth, thanks so much

20:06 JoeJulian nangthang: That's incorrect. Regardless of the filesystem, if a program is not written to use posix locking to alter a file, you should expect inconsistent results. Doesn't matter if it's GlusterFS, GFS2, NFS, or XFS/EXT2+/etc. if a file is written by two independent processes without locking, they're going to step on each other.
