14:20 knightsamar hi, i have a volume which has two bricks in replication config. it is mounted on a third machine. if i touch an empty file from machines 2 and 3, the change is reflected on all machines. But a touch creating an empty file from machine 1 is not reflected! Why would this be happening ?
14:27 msvbhat knightsamar: You should always create the files from the mountpoint. I mean from the client
14:28 knightsamar but this volume is to be used on a cluster. And on a cluser the writes may happen from any of the compute nodes, right?
14:29 knightsamar msvbhat: also, my brick1 is on a compute node and brick2 is on head node. is this a *very* undesirable configuration ?
14:30 wnlx joined #gluster
14:37 msvbhat knightsamar: In that case you have to mount the volume in all nodes of your cluster
14:38 knightsamar msvbhat: do you mean mount it as a glusterfs resource even on the machines that contain the brick ?
14:38 msvbhat knightsamar: Yes,
14:38 knightsamar *glusterfs filesystem
14:38 msvbhat knightsamar: In gluster the replication happens from client. So all your data should written from client (glusterfs mountpoint)

14:43 GB21_ joined #gluster
14:46 knightsamar msvbhat: in that case why would writes from machine2 -- on which i haven't mounted the brick but am directly writing to the filesystem reflected on machine3 ?
14:47 msvbhat knightsamar: machine3 is where you mounted he gluster volume? And your file is visible on mountpoint?
14:49 msvbhat Depending on your volume config, gluster behaves differently. But in any case, you should *never* write anything directly to the bricks
14:49 knightsamar msvbhat: yes machine3 is where i have mounted the volume as a glusterfs filesystem and the file written from machine2 (on which it isn't mounted as a volume but as a partition and writes are directly being done to xfs filesystem) are visible on it.
14:50 msvbhat knightsamar: A lookup might have made glusterfs to show it one the mountpoint (my guess).
14:50 knightsamar msvbhat: okay...could you recommend a good guide/talk on dos and donts and details of gluster implementation. i have read up the docs but they don't talk about practices.
14:51 msvbhat knightsamar: https://gluster.readthedocs.org/en/latest/
14:51 glusterbot Title: Gluster Docs (at gluster.readthedocs.org)
14:51 msvbhat knightsamar: You have gone through them?
14:52 knightsamar msvbhat: yes. i want to specifically read/listen to real life cluster implementations of gluster or atleast about the practices in detail.
14:53 msvbhat knightsamar: Many best practises are mentioned in the guide itself. But depending on your requirements, it might change
14:53 msvbhat knightsamar: I do not of any other doc which details them
14:53 knightsamar msvbhat: could you please point to a cluster implementaton ?
14:53 knightsamar *in the docs
14:54 msvbhat knightsamar: Can you send a mail to @gluster-users with all the practises/guidelines you are looking for?
14:55 knightsamar msvbhat: sure will do that. and will also lookup discussions around this in the archives. thanks
14:55 msvbhat knightsamar: Have you gone through https://gluster.readthedocs.org/en/la‚Äčtest/Administrator%20Guide/glossary/

15:02 knightsamar msvbhat: will do that.
