11:44 kdhananjay bfoster: We encountered a strange behavior wherein dd with odirect (oflag=direct) passed when the file was opened on xfs by glusterfs with O_WRONLY|O_LARGEFILE
11:44 kdhananjay bfoster: but the same thing failed when gluster opened the file instead with O_RDWR|O_LARGEFILE and of course coupled with oflag=direct option
11:45 kdhananjay bfoster: would you know what the reason for this behavior is?
11:46 bfoster so you're seeing an open() failure?

12:31 bfoster looks like it's effectively passing O_LARGEFILE|O_DIRECT|O_RDWR|O_WRONLY :/
12:31 bfoster hence strace displays it as O_ACCMODE
12:32 bfoster e.g., if I run dd to a local file, I see this:
12:32 bfoster open("/mnt/file", O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_TRUNC|O_DIRECT, 0666) = 3
12:33 bfoster or with xfs_io:

12:33 bfoster err

14:59 JoeJulian If you read and understand https://joejulian.name/blog/what-is-this-new-glusterfs-directory-in-33/ it may be ok, though I'm not 100% sure about that with 3.7. There's a new sql database that I'm not sure what's in it yet.
14:59 glusterbot Title: What is this new .glusterfs directory in 3.3? (at joejulian.name)
15:01 JoeJulian todiadiyatmo: Yes, but you obviously lose redundancy. Using an arbitor is better.
15:02 spalai joined #gluster
15:04 JoeJulian brettnem: My guess is you have large numbers of files in one directory and the lag is loading the directory and all the metadata associated with each file. If you can tree out those files in some logical fashion you should be able to reduce that significantly.
15:16 muneerse2 joined #gluster
15:18 wushudoin joined #gluster
15:21 nneul JoeJulian: thank you, I'll take a look at that. I'm primarily concerned about the 00-FF/00-FF data directory tree. It blows out certain backup systems when you have a bunch of volumes, each with tens of thousands of empty directories, when it might only have a few hundred total files in the tree.
15:22 JoeJulian If you do they'll just get recreated automatically.
15:23 JoeJulian I would ignore the .glusterfs tree if I were backing up from the bricks.
15:24 Bhaskarakiran joined #gluster
15:25 overclk joined #gluster
15:26 JoeJulian For that matter, I didn't back up from the bricks, I backed up from a client mount. If you back up from brick, you're going to back up dht link files that are 0 sized mode 1000. If you're trying to rebuild your volume after a disaster and you're restoring through a client mount (the best way to restore to prevent split-brain), those files might overwrite a restore you'd already completed from another brick.
15:27 nneul Fair enough.

16:12 JoeJulian Eww, yeah, that shouldn't be it.
16:13 brettnem I'm not sure how to diagnose what's happening.. My application attempts to play a wav, and with gluster it's a good 10 seconds before it starts.. without it's instant. :/

16:17 brettnem checking
16:18 brettnem using "time" the "real" time is pretty short.. like 137ms
16:19 brettnem it's 1ms using local file storage, 137ms using gluster
16:19 brettnem but not 10000ms like I'm experiencing in the app
16:19 JoeJulian Ok, so that means that something more than the lookup, open, read, close set of instructions must be happening.
16:20 brettnem like a stat?
16:21 JoeJulian Maybe, but that really shouldn't take much time.
16:21 JoeJulian You can try that, too, from the fuse mount, "stat $filename"

16:24 brettnem the app actually IS asterisk
16:24 JoeJulian Oh, ok.
16:25 JoeJulian Well that would be a much more difficult strace.
16:25 brettnem so asterisk isn't calling it, asterisk is trying to play a wav
16:25 brettnem yeah
16:25 anil_ left #gluster
16:26 JoeJulian Still, if you have a non-production setup you can test, that's probably the smartest thing to do.
16:26 brettnem oh bingo I think I got it
16:26 brettnem so I did a strace anyway
16:27 brettnem and when it attempts to play the file it tries to guess the file extension.. gluster returns a lot of "no such file or directory"
16:27 brettnem like 100 different extensions
16:27 JoeJulian Ah yes.
16:27 JoeJulian @lucky dht misses are expensive
16:27 glusterbot JoeJulian: https://joejulian.name/blog/dht-misses-are-expensive/
16:27 brettnem hum, I don't know if I can stop it from doing that crap
16:28 JoeJulian That article has an option you can set that will help.
16:28 brettnem ok cool, I'll check it out. that was my next questions.. I'll read first

18:31 nneul running into an issue trying to add a 3.7 node to a 3.5.x cluster as part of a rolling upgrade... I can add the peer on one of the other cluster nodes, but one the second one, I get a unknown errno 107.
18:31 nneul On the node I'm adding, it says the peer state is accepted, but it's marked as disconnected.
18:31 nneul What am I missing?

18:40 nneul Ah, looks like at least part is that it looks like I need to have rpc-auth-allow-insecure on the servers, which I don't currently have.
