04:59 baudster Trying to mount a gluster volume from a separate client machine but is getthing these errors --> http://pastebin.com/wzSvi3u9
04:59 glusterbot Please use http://fpaste.org or http://paste.ubuntu.com/ . pb has too many ads. Say @paste in channel for info about paste utils.

05:09 nbalacha baudster, this looks like a very old version: version 3.2.7
05:09 nbalacha baudster, please upgrade the client - we do not support this anymore
05:13 baudster just noticed that nbalacha
05:13 baudster thanks
05:13 baudster working now
05:13 baudster upgraded it to 3.7.15
05:14 nbalacha baudster, good to hear

05:15 Klas baudster: yeah, ubuntu versions are SERIOUSLY crappy
05:15 Klas they don't take any time to evaluate versions, they just take the latest one when they lock a version
05:16 Klas if glusterfs was in a more "stable" variant, this might be ok, but it's way too heavily developed to try that approach, imo
05:17 kkeithley @ppas
05:17 glusterbot kkeithley: I do not know about 'ppas', but I do know about these similar topics: 'ppa'
05:17 kkeithley (,,ppa)
05:17 kkeithley @ppa
05:17 glusterbot kkeithley: The official glusterfs packages for Ubuntu are available here: 3.6: http://goo.gl/XyYImN, 3.7: https://goo.gl/aAJEN5, 3.8: https://goo.gl/gURh2q

05:42 baudster Klas: I underestand what you maen
05:42 baudster mean
05:42 baudster I'd really want to deploy these stuff in redhat/centos/fedora but my collegeus here are ubuntu nerds
05:43 Klas ubuntu is fine, and the ppas are fine
05:43 Klas it's just that the official glusterfs packages are a bloody joke
05:44 Klas and that is a direct result of glusterfs not really having the whole "we move slowly" kind of thinking atm
05:44 baudster move fast, break stuff... the space X kinda way
05:44 baudster it does work though.. at least most of the time
05:45 Klas meh, I think glusterfs does a fine job, and the development is mostly fixing bugs
05:45 Klas (in versions)
05:45 Klas meaning, you should be fine as long as you stay in the same branch
05:45 Klas ubuntu however only backports security issues, not bug fixes
05:46 Klas so ubuntu 3.7.6-ubuntu0 is the same as 3.7.6, while 3.7.6-ubuntu1 will contain a security hole fix as well...
05:46 Klas but have all the bugs in 3.7.6 =P
05:46 baudster :)
05:46 Klas and possibly unique ones since the security fix in a vacuum might not be good enough
05:47 Klas as I said, this works fine in more slow-moving code bases
05:48 Klas not in one where you in the same weekly meeting see talk about 3.6, 3.7, 3.8 and 3.9 =P

08:22 jesk I'am mounting gluster from current Ubuntu
08:22 jesk the gluster server is a current Centos
08:22 jesk root@dude:~# mount -t glusterfs ritchie:/gv1 /mnt/gv1
08:23 jesk WARNING: getfattr not found, certain checks will be skipped..
08:23 jesk is this Warning something I should care about?
08:24 jesk after "sudo apt-get install attr"
08:24 jesk it disappeared
08:24 jesk not sure if those file attribute extensions are worth it?

08:39 jmeeuwen good morning
08:39 jmeeuwen i have some performance-related questions in a tiered environment
08:40 jmeeuwen i'm finding that barely any of the files are getting promoted
08:41 Javezim joined #gluster
08:42 * cloph has no experience with that - but I guess you should show some of the tier status output and what you have your triggers/limits configured to...
08:43 jmeeuwen i shall compose an fpaste ;-)

08:45 glusterbot Title: #428740 • Fedora Project Pastebin (at paste.fedoraproject.org)
08:47 jmeeuwen i've tried this before with setting the cluster.read-freq-threshold to 1 and features.record-counters to on
08:48 Mattias 2/close
08:48 Mattias left #gluster
08:50 cloph jmeeuwen: again discalaimer of not having any experience myself, but as you also have io-cache active, that might prevent the reads from actually reaching the tier layer (i.e. handled by cache already, so no need to promote) - but that is just guessing... - you at least have *some* files promoted
08:51 cloph the write/read-freq-threshold to 0: no idea whether that disables the tier counts..
08:51 cloph but you wrote you already tried with different values
08:52 jmeeuwen so, would i set performance.io-cache to off and see what happens?
08:53 jmeeuwen doing that now ...
08:53 cloph well, I just google around to see whether value of 0 makes sense / having features.record-counters off makes sense...
08:54 cloph one of my guesses is that with setting the treshold to 0 you disabled tiering. But again: just theories... No experience with that myself.
08:54 jmeeuwen 0 was the default
08:55 jmeeuwen i played with it a little bit, and then decided to attempt to match the configuration in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1232625#c13
08:55 glusterbot Bug 1232625: urgent, urgent, ---, josferna, CLOSED ERRATA, Data Tiering: Files not getting promoted once demoted
08:55 jmeeuwen which indeed also has performance.io-cache turned off
08:57 jmeeuwen note that features.ctr-enabled is still on, but features.record-counters is off ... not sure which one is supposed to tickle gluster's fancy the right way tbh.
09:00 cloph reading docs suggest that with the threshold of 0, it doesn't care about access-counts but instead just uses the available size (the low/high watermark settings), so having 0 should work..
09:01 cloph and from my understanding then you also don't need the record-counting bookkeeping, as all you care is lookup/cache-misses.. but reads so easy on paper ;-)

09:05 cloph jmeeuwen: if you don't get results yourself or from others in the channel at this time, I'd try again once the US wakes up (or post to the mailinglist, then timezones matter less)
