15:01 MrStrix can I restrict the ability to create volumes on a glusterfs with untrusted nodes?

15:36 JoeJulian MrStrix: An untrusted node is already restricted from creating volumes.
15:43 MrStrix how? if I have (untrusted) servers in my pool, i cannot control them, or can I?
16:01 JoeJulian Ah, apparently we're using different terms. By adding a server to a trusted pool it is now a trusted server.
16:02 JoeJulian But some untrusted machine cannot install gluster and join your trusted pool.
16:05 MrStrix our idea was, to use gluster as a distibuted filesharing platform inside a vpn, a "shared folder" for friends. but machines of friends are not machines I control. My idea was to restrict the ability to create a new volume on my server. otherwise, anyone who already joined the pool can access pretty much all files on my machine...

16:06 JoeJulian true
16:07 MrStrix or can I restrict the glusterd to a specific partition/folder only?
16:08 JoeJulian Run the server in a VM or container?
16:10 MrStrix this does not prevent others from taking over the firewall config, ssh authorized_keys etc. and the server-vm/container needs to reside inside the vpn -> others have direct access to it
16:15 JoeJulian I'm not getting what you're saying. If they can take over the firewall config, authorized_keys, etc, then they can access the files you don't want them accessing anyway.
16:15 JoeJulian I'm saying only give them access to what you don't care if they access.
16:19 MrStrix yes. but they can easily create a new volume which includes folders that I don't want them to have. I can, for example run the following command:
16:19 MrStrix gluster volume create gv4 replica 2 localhost:/gluster/new gnode02:/etc force
16:20 JoeJulian Not if they don't have login access to the server vm.
16:20 JoeJulian Or if you're running a redhat derivative, selinux can stop them.
16:21 JoeJulian (btw, can't use localhost as a peer name)
16:22 MrStrix (i know, this was for explainig purposes)
16:22 MrStrix as far as I see, the clue is that they do not need login access. all they need is being in the pool
16:23 MrStrix and they need to be in the pool in order to replicate our shared storage
16:23 JoeJulian no
16:24 JoeJulian They need to run a server to provide capacity to the volume.
16:24 JoeJulian They don't need to run a server to be a client.
16:25 MrStrix true. but as soon as they run a server (to provide capacity) they have access on each another
16:27 JoeJulian Is this all on a close network anyway? college campus or something?
16:27 MrStrix no
16:27 JoeJulian because if you have a lot of latency, this isn't what you want anyway.
16:27 MrStrix okay, good to know, thanks
16:28 MrStrix then we'll try to find something more suitable for our needs, thank you very much
16:28 JoeJulian You're welcome.

21:00 PatNarciso_ I've got a vol/info file with op-version=2 & client-op-version=2.  And that... doesn't look right to me.  Newly created volumes have op-version=30706 & client-op-version=30706.  Whats the ideal method to get this old volume up2date?
21:03 * PatNarciso_ is reading gluster.readthedocs.io/en/latest/Upgrade-Guide/op_version/
21:05 victori joined #gluster
21:06 PatNarciso_ hmm.
21:09 PatNarciso_ This was important to me, because 'tier volname attach' was failing yesterday, due to a bad version on this volume... but today, its working?  Tier migration in progress!  SWEET!
