10:34 genial Hello. I'm currently in the process of migrating a 3-node/3-brick replica cluster to new hardware: 3-node/9-brick replica distributed. How would you recommend I go about this task? Should I replace the 3 first bricks one by one, then add the remaining 6 bricks and run rebalancing? Or could I run the clusters side by side, transfer the data using geo-replication and switch over when the time is right?

11:57 jiffin genial: IMO there are two options 1.)create new volume using 9 bricks then copy data from old volume to new volume using fuse mounts
11:58 jiffin 2.) add three subvolumes to existing volume and perform rebalance & remove brick
11:58 jiffin I guess 2.) requires more time than the first one

12:02 Klas for some reason, our arbiter node seems to utilize noticeably more RAM than our normal nodes, is this a known behaviour?
12:02 Guest____ Yeah jiffin I'm leaning against option #2 since the cluster needs to be operational during the move
12:05 Klas StormTide: I went to bed, and you seemed to solve stuff
12:06 Klas I always assumed slave volume was required, so it could be flexible.

15:42 intense i have a gluster volume set up with four datasets in it. I notice that the datasets with many small files take significantly longer to transfer with cp over an NFS mount than the datasets with just a few large files. Is this a known limitation of gluster or is there a solution?
15:42 intense note that the datasets are all about the same size

15:48 cloph large number of files are slower to transfer on every filesystem, just on networked filesystem the effects are more visible. the housekeeping needed to make sure the file is in proper state needs to be done for every file

17:48 StormTide klas, yah, i sorted it out. though performance seems to be really quite poor... might need to look at the geo-replica small file performance at some point here. starting the replica created very high load on the master and resulted in almost no network activity. some hours later it started transferring the data, but slowly.... its still copying... its like its trying to batch up the rsyncs or something but in doing so it exhausts
17:48 StormTide itself on small files...
17:49 chawlanikhil24 joined #gluster
17:49 StormTide it would have been a lot faster just to mount the volume on the master and rsync from it... so not sure what gluster's doing internally...

18:47 cloph Hmm. why does gluster (geo-replication) try to ipv6 localhost (::1:24007) when the volume has "transport.address-family: inet"?
18:49 baber StormTide: we've had similar issues with geo-rep. Small files are slow. Couple options to look into: use-tarssh (if this is an initial sync), and if you're on dispersed or distributed dispersed, try turning off disperse.eager-lock

20:35 StormTide got it, install autofs package then,  noauto,x-systemd.automount to the fstab options ... then systemctl daemon-reload and systemctl restart remote-fs.target ... if anyone is curious...
