10:08 steveg78 hi, ive been running some tests of postgres on top of a gluster volume and get about 10x worse performance compared against a local directory
10:08 steveg78 and a lot of unexpected data beyond EOF messages until i set performance.write-behind off
10:09 steveg78 using gluster 3.10 and 3.9
10:09 steveg78 any ideas where i should start looking ?

10:54 kblin hi folks
10:54 kramdoss_ joined #gluster
10:54 kblin I've got a small gluster setup here where I'm currently seeing some weird load on one of my servers, and I'm wondering how to best debug this
10:55 jkroon joined #gluster
10:55 kblin basically I've got three servers providing a single volume consisting of three bricks that are replicated across the three servers
10:56 kblin on one of the servers, I'm seeing a really high CPU usage by both glusterfsd processes, whereas they seem to be relatively idle on the two other machines
10:57 itisravi kblin: are there any pending self-heals?
10:57 kblin itisravi: that should be visible in "gluster volume status", right?
10:57 itisravi kblin:  gluster volume heal volname info
10:58 kblin hang on
10:59 kblin that command is taking quite some time to run
10:59 kblin which I take might mean "yes"
11:00 kblin ah, there we go, it's spitting out screenfuls of stuff
11:01 itisravi mhm so that could be the reason for the cpu usage.
11:05 kblin itisravi: I seem to have a bunch of non-printable characters in my list there, is that supposed to happen?
11:06 itisravi kblin: not really. Unless you mean it prints the gfids of the files.
11:06 kblin itisravi: I have gfid:e63b26d2-9e79-48f4-a7b4-a76e6341b623 and the like in the output
11:06 itisravi that is expected.
11:06 kblin but that's not what I mean. I get those unicode symbol boxes
11:07 itisravi oh.
11:07 itisravi kblin: what version of gluster are you running?
11:08 itisravi kblin: are the files stored in the volume having regular english names? :)
11:09 kblin itisravi: I'm running 3.5.2 as shipped with Debian jessie
11:10 kblin itisravi: I'm not 100% sure, some of this is stuff uploaded via a web interface, but they should be ascii
11:10 itisravi ok
11:10 kblin but it also looks like it's the same codepoints again and again
11:16 kblin ok, so it looks like there's 32552 entries in the self-heal list, that's probably pointing at some other problems with my setup
11:16 itisravi kblin:  I did fix a bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1141558 in 3.5.3 which does print garbage in some cases.
11:17 glusterbot Bug 1141558: medium, unspecified, ---, ravishankar, CLOSED CURRENTRELEASE, AFR : "gluster volume heal <volume_name> info" prints some random characters
11:17 itisravi but 3.5 is no longer supported TBH.
11:19 kblin so what's the proposed way of getting up-to-date glusterfs packages on debian? the "other linux versions" on the website just has Ubuntu packages
11:19 itisravi kblin: what you need to see is if there are any clients that have lost connection to one or more serveres.
11:19 itisravi servers*
11:19 kblin well, the logs are full of timeouts from clients trying to connect to that machine
11:21 itisravi not sure if https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/LATEST/Debian/ will help.
11:21 glusterbot Title: Index of /pub/gluster/glusterfs/LATEST/Debian (at download.gluster.org)
11:22 kblin hm, that seems to contain a debian repo with up-to-date packages, I'll give that a spin
11:22 anoopcs kblin, itisravi is correct. You will get latest packages from d.g.o
11:22 anoopcs download.gluster.org
11:22 kblin anoopcs: https://www.gluster.org/download/ gives no hint about that, though :)
11:22 glusterbot Title: Install GlusterFS — Gluster (at www.gluster.org)
11:23 anoopcs kblin, There is a link...use that
11:23 anoopcs kblin, named "GlusterFS version 3.10 is the latest version at the moment"
11:23 kblin sure, but that's the "build it yourself from source" link
11:23 samppah_ aaaa
11:24 kblin and there's a "packages for other distros are here" link, that points to launchpad, which only has ubuntu packages
11:24 anoopcs kblin, No.. For me it redirects to https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/LATEST/
11:24 glusterbot Title: Index of /pub/gluster/glusterfs/LATEST (at download.gluster.org)
11:24 decayofmind Hi! I'm getting strange Segmentation Fault error on attempt to mount a volume
11:24 kblin sure, but the header of that section is Download GlusterFS source code to build it yourself:
11:24 decayofmind #0  0x00007f605a3aa828 in gf_process_reserved_ports () from /usr/lib64/libglusterfs.so.0
11:24 decayofmind and nothing else
11:25 kblin so I did not expect a deb repo to be available there
11:25 kblin anoopcs: but in any case, we figured that out now, so thanks for that
11:25 anoopcs kblin, Yeah.
11:25 kblin https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/LATEST/Debian/ even has the instructions on setting up the repo
11:25 glusterbot Title: Index of /pub/gluster/glusterfs/LATEST/Debian (at download.gluster.org)
11:25 kblin so that's all good
11:26 kblin do I expect my gluster to crash and burn if I upgrade from 3.5 to 3.10 while having running volumes?
11:28 itisravi kblin: 3.5 has an older version of AFR. It would be better if you can stop volume access while you upgrade.
11:29 kblin I was sort of expecting that, yes
11:29 itisravi ;)
11:29 kettlewell joined #gluster
11:29 kblin I'll see if I can schedule a maintenance window soon
11:30 itisravi Ensure that there are no pending heals before upgrade.
11:30 itisravi i.e heal info should show zero entries.
11:31 kblin yeah, that'll likely mean I need to be down for a while until all of those heals are drained
11:31 kblin which makes scheduling even more fun
11:32 kblin but complaining won't help, so I'll see how to work around this
11:32 kblin thanks for the help so far, much appreciated
11:32 itisravi good luck!
