09:37 Klas is it possible to remove files in .glusterfs/changelogs/ ?
09:37 Klas we are using a volume with very little data but loads of changes
09:38 Klas 300 MB files, 2 GB of changelog
09:38 Klas seems a tad silly
09:46 ndevos Klas: depends on why you enabled them, I guess? geo-replication, quota and other services consume those
09:51 Klas I haven't willfully enabled them
09:51 Klas this volume is very basic
09:59 Klas ndevos: can I read somewhere about implications of shutting it down/clearing it and how to do that?
09:59 Klas googling glusterfs changelog is really quite impossible =P
10:01 ndevos when you enable certain services the changelog gets enabled too
10:01 ndevos I'm not sure which services all consume those, and I dont know where it is documented (if anywhere)
10:02 ndevos the easiest is to ask on gluster-users@gluster.org, most developers will read that and would respond
10:05 Klas ah
10:07 Klas I just learned that georeplication was indeed activated
10:07 Klas (based on your answers)
10:08 Klas so, is there a way to pack, rotate or delete those files or is the entire chain needed?
10:08 Klas I can send this to gluster-users@gluster.org as well =)
10:09 ndevos yeah, just send any questions there :)

15:07 yalu I have files in my glusterfs directories with no extended attributes. These include subdirectories at the top level. It's a 3-brick replica.
15:08 yalu I find that strange - the file system works well, though (I had to resolve a few split brain conflicts and that's how I found out)
15:09 yalu oh never mind. I am getting old or it is getting late. wrong arguments to getfattr

17:18 Gambit15 All fixed now
17:20 Gambit15 Had a system crash this morning & for some reason, the file ownerships on one of my bricks had all been reset to root
17:20 Gambit15 A simple chmod seems to have done the trick :)
17:21 JoeJulian +1

21:02 major so I have this really wonky idea of having a front-end "master" pool which I write to and which .. at its own leasure .. "moves" the data to other pools of various distributions that better fit the data and then sets up some sort of cross-pool-pointer...
21:08 Gambit15 major - tiering?
21:09 major kinda... but automatically move the data back down the system with a singlular view of the universe
21:18 JoeJulian That's tiering, unless I'm understanding something wrong.
21:20 zcourts joined #gluster
21:22 major well .. like .. if I write a 4TB file I want it to go to the top-level pool, but "migrate" off to some pool better designed for storing that sort of data, but if I write to some directory that is "ultra super important" (or set an ACL to trigger it?) it writes to some sort of ludicrous replication pool...
21:22 major or if it just sits there for a while it migrates off to the ultra-slow "attic" pool..
21:23 JoeJulian Yeah, that was my understanding. It's entirely possible that my understanding is wrong though.
21:24 major hmm
21:24 * major needs to go read more..
21:48 major everything I am reading seems to show only a single backend pool behind the tier
21:49 major kinda want like N backend pools and write some sort of .. "rules" for directing data to the backend
22:07 cliluw JoeJulian: I read your comment about the deprecated "replace-brick" option at http://lists.gluster.org/pipermail/gluster-users.old/2012-October/011581.html. What's the difference between the old "replace-brick start" and the current "replace-brick commit force"? What did we lose when that option was deprecated?

22:29 Gambit15 major, I've not delved into all of the possibilities with tiering, but for complex rules you may well need to setup your own system. For example, you could overlay mounts on each client with /foo being one volume & /foo/bar being another volume, etc, etc. Then use a script & cron to move your data around
22:30 Gambit15 That way, you could transparently have various differently configured volumes in your hierarchy
