11:39 Rakkin I've never worked with distributed filesystems, so allow me to ask probably stupid questions. I'm looking for a way to make kind of RW backups on two machines. The machines are connected over wifi and not always powered on at the same time. What I want is to have the ability to change data on both machines and when they're online they should synchronize it. Is it possible to have such a setup with GlusterFS
11:39 Rakkin or should I look for something else?
12:05 int-0x21 I dont think that would work, if you changed a file on both sides how would i know how fix that ?
12:05 int-0x21 Its basicly a permanent split brain scenario
12:06 msvbhat joined #gluster
12:11 Rakkin Maybe set machine priority? If both machines touched one file ,then the machine with higher priority (say, M1) would overwrite changes on the machine with lower priority (M2). But if M2 created a new file or made changes to a file that wasn't touched on M1, then M1 would replicate those changes locally..
12:12 int-0x21 As far as i know there is nothing in gluster for this scenario. but im far from a expert

12:26 Rakkin Situations when I need to make changes to the gluster partition while one machine is offline aren't that common. So, what if I write directly to the "brick" partition in an emergency situation, can I then force gluster to rescan the brick for changes and replicate those changes on the other machine?

14:01 Rakkin hmm... According to this post https://joejulian.name/blog/why-replicated-filesystems-are-hard/ Gluster understands desynchronisation of files (split-brain?) and such situations can be resolved manually. Is it still true? The post is quite old.

18:06 Rakkin Now, I have another problem. I'm trying to run gluster 3.12.3 on two similar machines. On one machine the daemon works on the other it segfaults almost immediately after start: https://pastebin.com/raw/W2Cz05EW Any idea what can be causing this?
18:06 glusterbot Please use http://fpaste.org or http://paste.ubuntu.com/ . pb has too many ads. Say @paste in channel for info about paste utils.
18:09 Rakkin The same log: https://paste.ubuntu.com/26051824/

18:18 Rakkin Also, the systems are similar but not identical. Gluster doesn't work on: kernel 4.4.87, glibc 2.25, openrc. Gluster works on: kernel 4.9.26, glibc 2.26, systemd.

20:07 JoeJulian Rakkin: What distros?
20:07 Rakkin gentoo
20:07 JoeJulian iirc, that means you have to compile it as part of the install, right?
20:07 Rakkin right
20:08 JoeJulian So different compilers and different libraries. :( More variables than I like for diagnosing things on a Sunday. ;) Perhaps try turning off gcc optimization and see if there's a compiler bug.
20:09 Rakkin gcc versions are the same and they compile for similar hardware
20:09 JoeJulian Oh, interesting.
20:10 JoeJulian Ok, maybe run it in gdb (if you run glusterd with the -d flag, it'll run in the foreground) and get a `thread apply all backtrace`.
20:11 JoeJulian Odds are I'll be asking you to file a bug report, but I'll give it a shot anyway.
20:11 glusterbot https://bugzilla.redhat.com/enter_bug.cgi?product=GlusterFS
20:12 Rakkin Ok, I'll try gdb...
20:17 Rakkin And while I'm installing gdb, what if Gluster needs some network-related parameter that is not enabled in my 4.4.87 kernel? That "Failed to get tcp-user-timeout" which is not present on the working system looks suspicious...
20:17 Jacob8432 joined #gluster
20:17 JoeJulian It's possible. Shouldn't segfault though.
20:18 JoeJulian So if that _is_ the problem, there should still be a bug report since that should be error checked.
20:19 Rakkin hmm... Let's see how it goes with gdb first.
20:21 JoeJulian Nope, just read the source. That warning is about reading from the config. If that config option is not set, it uses a default.
20:21 JoeJulian afk for a bit... putting up some shelves.
20:28 Rakkin Ok. Is this useful: https://paste.ubuntu.com/26052909/ ?

21:48 JoeJulian Rakkin: is libtirpc the same between the two?
21:48 JoeJulian that _seems_ to be the source of the segfault.
21:48 Rakkin Let me check it...
21:50 Rakkin Yeah... 1.0.2 on both systems.
21:53 JoeJulian Yeah, sorry, I'm stuck. All the backtrace that's not libtirpc or glibc looks like it's doing what it's supposed to and the memory ranges for the structures seems sane.
21:53 JoeJulian So unless there's a problem with somehow trying to read beyond the structure, I don't know.
21:54 Rakkin hmm... I'm recompiling libitrpc with the latest gcc, just in case.
22:01 farhorizon joined #gluster
22:05 Rakkin Unfortunately, that didn't help. But funny enough, gluster 3.6.5 (the only other version currently in gentoo's portage) doesn't crash on this machine. Speaking of which, is using of different gluster version on different nodes allowed?
22:06 JoeJulian It should work, just any post 3.6 feature won't be available.
22:07 Rakkin I see.
22:11 ic0n joined #gluster
22:18 Rakkin Woohoo! Thanks for telling me to look at libtirpc! I recompiled gluster with libitrpc switched off. I guess it's now using sunrpc instead and it works. \o/
