13:17 pdurbin so, links get shortened if they're more than 50 characters: if (length($display_url) >= 50) https://github.com/moritz/ilbot/blob/master/lib/IrcLog/WWW.pm
13:18 pdurbin i might raise that for my installations of ilbot
13:18 pdurbin maybe even double it
13:19 pdurbin i should go through my data and see how long my links typically are
13:19 pdurbin right now i'm very conscious of the shortening, so i often include the <title> along with the link using CoLT: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/colt/
13:20 pdurbin if the link is readable/meaningful, i don't mind it being long
13:21 pdurbin this one, for example, is long but readable: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2008/05/its-clay-shirkys-internet-we-just-live-in-it.html
13:21 pdurbin 90 characters
13:21 pdurbin maybe i'll raise it to 150. i dunno. i'll think about it
13:22 pdurbin it might be nice to have this as a config option
13:38 pdurbin http://irclog.perlgeek.de/crimsonfu/2012-10-12#i_6057376 for example has a readable/meaningful link that's 143 characters long: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/b/techcenter/archive/2011/05/26/meaningful-names-for-network-devices-in-rhel-6-sp1-on-dell-systems.aspx
13:39 pdurbin that's pretty much the longest one
13:39 pdurbin github urls can get long too... links deep inside repositories
13:40 pdurbin so maybe 150 or 200 is what i'll go with
14:02 pdurbin ok, i raised it for my ilbot that logs #sourcefu, as i just announced: http://irclog.greptilian.com/sourcefu/2013-02-09#i_2894
14:02 pdurbin we'll see how it goes
21:14 moritz pdurbin: I think I did the URL shortening before I did the forced line wraps
21:22 pdurbin forced line wraps?
21:24 moritz erm, sorry, /me not clear
21:24 moritz ilbot now breaks up words that are too long
21:24 moritz because otherwise they'd cause horizontal scrolling, which I absolutely hate
21:25 moritz so before that feature, a link of 200 characters would force the table cell to be 200em wide
21:25 pdurbin Oh, I see. Hmm
21:26 moritz I dunno if the URLs are broken up right now
21:28 pdurbin you know, http://irclog.greptilian.com/spanworm/2013-02-09 looks fine from my android phone
21:28 pdurbin no horizontal scrolling
21:29 pdurbin so good job, whatever you did in the past is working :)
21:30 pdurbin it's funny, i was looking at Jeff Atwood's new site from mobile and it looked terrible. talk about horizontal scrolling!
21:31 pdurbin but they i realized they aren't done with that part: http://meta.discourse.org/t/deliver-support-for-mobile-smartphones-as-soon-as-possible/661/5
21:31 pdurbin anyway, i just started a new discussion are (with ilbot, of course), and I'm very happy with how it looks on mobile: http://spanworm.com
21:32 pdurbin the ilbot logs i mean: http://irclog.greptilian.com/spanworm/2013-02-08
21:32 pdurbin "I definitely like the idea of persistent IRC" -- http://irclog.greptilian.com/spanworm/2013-02-08#i_2815
21:32 pdurbin whoops, discussion area, i meant
21:33 pdurbin i find that IRC works just fine for discussion
21:48 moritz aye, it sure does :-)
21:58 pdurbin #perl6 was inspiring
21:58 pdurbin got me looking at ilbot
22:04 moritz #perl6 inspired me to write ilbot :-)
22:18 pdurbin a virtuous circle
