17:18 melodie salut
17:19 melodie hello
17:26 pdurbin "hello" I know :)
17:37 melodie hi pdurbin
17:38 melodie I have registered at the website you pointed me to yesterday but can't sign for a course yet
17:39 melodie in the meantime someone at the #linuxchix chan told me about coursera and I went to have a look, it's the same type of online courses with a free access but the courses are not the same and I signed in for one of them
17:39 melodie about edx : what does edx mean ?
17:41 debianero joined #linuxvillage
17:42 melodie salut debianero
17:43 debianero salut melodie
17:43 melodie tu vas bien ?
17:43 debianero ça va ça va :)
17:43 melodie :)
17:44 melodie pdurbin I'll be around, not always in front of the keyboard but back once a while to read
17:45 pdurbin I'm not sure what edx means
17:45 pdurbin coursera is a good bet
17:45 pdurbin the guy who founded reddit has a programming class on there I've been meaning to check out
17:54 melodie reddit... that rings a bell
17:55 melodie do you have any part in edx ? what source of income do the people who teach there and in coursera have ? their own universities funds maybe ?
18:00 pdurbin edx is partially a harvard thing (where i work) and the directory of edx gave a presentation at last summer's IT summit
18:00 pdurbin so I heard about it there. but I don't know a lot about it
18:01 pdurbin the idea is to scale to a very large audience. thousands of students at once for a single class
18:15 pdurbin the cs50 class at http://cs.harvard.edu/malan/courses/ is taught by a professor at harvard. it started out as http://cs50.net and http://cs50.tv but now it's also at https://x.cs50.net
18:16 melodie pdurbin is there a difference between the last three ?
18:17 pdurbin yes but it's complicated :)
18:17 pdurbin it's pretty much the same content :)
18:17 melodie ok
18:17 pdurbin and I would definitely recommend that class
18:18 melodie at edx what I noticed is that there is no calendar allowing to get a fast sight on which courses are going to be available and when : in coursera at least there is a filter to find out
18:18 melodie the one course which pulled my interest has already started, about one month ago maybe, and also is a bit too high for my knowledge
18:21 pdurbin at http://cs50.tv you can subscribe to it as a video podcast and watch at your own pace
18:22 pdurbin there are a couple related classes too:
18:22 pdurbin Building Dynamic Websites / OpenCourseWare - http://cs75.tv/2010/fall/
18:22 pdurbin Building Mobile Applications / OpenCourseWare - http://cs76.tv/2012/spring/
18:24 melodie I'll bookmark this place too, and visit it sometime
18:24 melodie you have given me an idea while talking, last time, so this is the course I have signed for:
18:25 melodie https://www.coursera.org/course/interactivepython
18:25 melodie this should please you to know I did sign for it
18:27 melodie that's bad, the page http://cs50.tv does not fit in my 15' screen it looks like it has been designed for large screens :?
18:39 pdurbin this laptop I'm typing on has kind of a small screen :(
18:39 melodie what kind of lappy is it ?
18:44 pdurbin https://plus.google.com/107770072576338242009/posts/Hb8qfjoRVSZ
18:44 pdurbin (a thinkpad with a screen you can draw on)
18:45 pdurbin thinkpad x220t
18:50 melodie I look
18:50 melodie I have thinkpads too, althought there are old to very old ones
18:56 melodie is it this one ? http://www.notebookcheck.biz/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X220T-serie.60518.0.html
18:57 pdurbin yes
18:58 melodie is it comfortable to use ? How is the keyboard ? curved keys as the original thinkpads from IBM ?
18:59 pdurbin they keys are ok but one popped off the other day
19:00 pdurbin and i had to have the keyboard replacedd
19:00 pdurbin and the motherboard
19:00 pdurbin the screen feels very cramped compared to my retina macbook at work
19:04 melodie is the retina macbook also of a 12.5" ?
19:04 ben2morrow joined #linuxvillage
19:04 pdurbin it's a 15 inch
19:04 melodie this looks like very fragile hardware, compared to the ancestors
19:04 melodie so what does "cramped" mean ?
19:05 pdurbin like i don't have any room to move
19:07 melodie you bought something which is merely larger than a notebook : you might need to plug in an additional screen
19:07 melodie and it looks like this is a fragile one, which is a shame because it is kind of expensive too
19:07 pdurbin there's no room in my little condo :(
19:08 melodie sorry, what is "condo" ?
19:08 pdurbin smaller than a house :)
19:08 pdurbin condominium
19:09 melodie condominium ? I look
19:09 melodie I thought you were in a condo : condensateur as these ones http://www.ressources-stl.fr/st/premiere/courspremiere/condensateurs_fichiers/slide0004_image014.jpg
19:09 melodie ^^
19:09 pdurbin an apartment you own, basically
19:09 melodie wait a sec, I check the translation :D
19:10 melodie ok appartment then
19:10 pdurbin yep
19:10 melodie maybe a screen fixed on the wall would do the trick ?
19:11 melodie :D
19:11 pdurbin i'm anti-tv :)
19:11 melodie this could be a computer dedicated screen withouth tv ?
19:11 pdurbin in my heart it would still be a tv
19:13 melodie some also put a white screen and use a device plugged to the computer

19:14 melodie Anges_ ?
19:14 melodie ah
19:14 Anges je me suis seulement connectée une 2e fois
19:14 melodie c'est ce que j'ai cru voir :)
19:14 melodie tu vas bien ?
19:14 pdurbin a projector. yes. i have one. we use it for movies and mario kart :)
19:15 Anges très bien, et toi ?
19:15 melodie pdurbin oh I see !
19:15 melodie Anges pas mal merci
19:15 Anges j’espère pouvoir venir aux rmll de bxl
19:15 melodie je suis loin de bruxelles
19:16 melodie pdurbin the thing is http://cs50.tv seems to fit in large screens only, or is it Firefox which has some trouble ?
19:17 Anges pdurbin, tv screens and computer screen are not exactly the same thing, although they look alike
19:17 Anges computer screen usually don’t come with a remote ;)
19:17 pdurbin melodie: you could download the mp4 files
19:17 pdurbin Anges: you're right :)
19:18 melodie pdurbin or wear glasses so to see small fonts : the problem is the website didn't adapt it's code to make the page fit whatever the size of fonts is
19:19 melodie I have just checked with another browser in which I didn't configure the settings
19:19 melodie I have several browsers because I put up Wordpress websites and often need to use several in a row
19:22 pdurbin have you ever used selenium?
19:22 pdurbin http://docs.seleniumhq.org
19:23 melodie only as a medical supply :D (some time ago)
19:24 melodie pdurbin reading here http://cs50.tv/2011/fall/ what does "concentrators and non-concentrators" mean ? what are the concentrators (the translation does not change the word)
19:25 pdurbin if you "major" in computer science or not
19:27 melodie pdurbin could you tell me more ?
19:27 melodie I am still not sure what it the full meaning
19:28 melodie "what is*"
19:28 pdurbin you might "concentrate" in computer science. or history. or biology. or literature
19:31 Anges when you major in computer sciences (or history, or biology…), do you still have classes where you learn other disciplines?
19:31 melodie pdurbin and is it a matter of applying for certifications ?
19:37 pdurbin I'm sure it depends on the school
19:38 pdurbin Anges: yes, typically in the US you take other classes too that are outside your major. we call these "electives"
19:41 Anges in France, once you graduate from high school (at age 18), and go to University, you almost have no electives.
19:42 Anges If you go to sciences university, you will have mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science and nothing else!
19:42 melodie Anges what are you doing these days Anges ? finished with studies or not quite ?
19:43 Anges finished a long time ago ;)
19:43 Anges then worked (computer sciences in banks) for 5 years,
19:43 Anges then got 3 kids
19:43 Anges last one is now 3 years old
19:43 melodie oh ok !
19:43 Anges oldest 9 1/2
19:44 Anges now looking for the ideal job: part time, from home, making loads of money lol
19:44 melodie is that ideal ?
19:45 melodie I mean is doing it from home ideal ? :D
19:45 Anges it is, when you have 3 kids that go to choir, music lessons, sports, etc
19:45 Anges if it’s just in front of school, I’ll take it too ;)
19:45 melodie if you can get a good organisation indeed
19:50 Anges I’m not a completely organized person, and I barely survive ;)
19:53 melodie then good luck with this project
19:56 melodie pdurbin I was looking at the other link you gave me a few minutes ago : http://docs.seleniumhq.org/docs/01_introducing_selenium.jsp#test-automation-for-web-applications and I was wondering what you think I could do with it ? did you think of it when I talked about wordpress or more related to the size of fonts in the cs50.tv website ?
20:04 melodie joined #linuxvillage
20:08 pdurbin melodie: mostly I was wondering if you knew selenium well so you could teach me :)
20:09 pdurbin I don't think it will help you with your cs50 problem
20:09 melodie pdurbin you are funny!
20:09 melodie I am looking at the course now
20:09 melodie they are tearing phone books apart X'D
20:12 melodie I wonder if they get cash from Apple ?
20:12 melodie mac laptops all over the place... /o\
20:12 pdurbin :)
20:13 pdurbin here's a picture of my macbook at work: https://plus.google.com/107770072576338242009/posts/9Ab7wozdFZF
20:15 melodie I have a Logitech mouse which looks a bit like your's and I don't see the mac logo on your computer, so it can be any brand. :)
20:15 Anges you should add a wristrest ;)
20:15 Anges is it better to have the screens on top of each other rather than side by side?
20:17 melodie Anges I'd say he seems to have a table which lacks width
20:17 Anges he just needs to get rid of the plant
20:17 Anges wait, he seems to be doing just that ;)
20:18 melodie pdurbin what do you think ?
20:19 Anges if pdurbin is gone, it’s kinda strange to be speaking English between French people
20:19 Anges :)
20:19 melodie Anges the chan is logged so he can catch up any time
20:20 Anges didn’t know that
20:20 melodie http://irclog.perlgeek.de/linuxvillage/2013-04-07
20:20 melodie it's fairly recent, one friend of pdurbin accepted to log it with his tools
20:21 pdurbin if I had three screens I would put them side by side
20:21 Anges how European :)
20:21 pdurbin if they were all at the same height
20:22 Anges I used to plug my eeepc 701 on a external screen on top of it. I had the small screen filled with xchat, and the big screen for work ;)

20:40 pdurbin_m sure
20:40 pdurbin_m I lost my laptop to my 3 year old and Tux Paint
20:40 melodie :)
20:41 melodie do you know the program having for name "gamine", for the very young children ?
20:41 pdurbin_m no
20:42 melodie http://gnunux.info/projets/gamine
20:44 pdurbin_m hmm
20:46 melodie I checked it's not packaged for Fedora
20:49 pdurbin_m how about arch?
20:54 melodie available in aur :
20:54 melodie $ yaourt gamine
20:54 melodie 1 aur/gamine 1.1-1 (8)
21:01 pdurbin_m hmm
21:01 melodie why arch ?
21:02 melodie do you have a Arch installed ?
21:02 pdurbin_m I read a nice post about Arch this morning: http://irclog.perlgeek.de/crimsonfu/2013-04-07#i_6674060
21:03 pdurbin_m this post: https://plus.google.com/115250422803614415116/posts/WDAZTPWxmNC
21:04 melodie it is possible that his fonts were good at once thanks to the gnome desktop, I always need to work on mine in a new install, but I do it following the English wiki and this is always a good way to get the fonts the right way
21:05 melodie Archlinux is very flexible
21:05 melodie and more and more reliable
21:06 Anges you need to have the wiki next to you when you install arch ;)
21:06 Anges but I’m really happy with it
21:06 melodie I have an install which I did in 2009, last year I updated it after one year without using it, then I converted it from 32 bits to 64 bits because in the meanwhile I had changed machine and just moved the hard drive into the new machine. all went smooth, following the howto on the wiki
21:07 Anges The install on my desktop works on a day-to-day basis, but lots of things don’t work, because I tried weird things and never cleaned my system
21:07 Anges the install on my netbook is great. almost everything worked ootb
21:08 melodie Anges same here, I couldn't go without it (even if once a while I reboot to ubuntu when my printer driver is broken by an update)
21:08 Anges including mounting usb keys :))
21:08 melodie :)
21:09 Anges I had to boot on ctkarch live to make the installation, because it was really a pain to write everything in azerty instead of bépo
21:09 melodie Anges if it is the same arch on both machines you could simply make a tarball out of the one which works, and untar it in a fresh partition
21:09 Anges hmmm…
21:09 melodie you would just need to setup the bootloader accordingly after and check for the gpu driver
21:10 Anges I think I should put some order in my data first
21:10 Anges but it’s not really organized (and my nas isn’t better)
21:10 melodie you can even let your data out of it and do a tarball just with the system and the user configuration files
21:10 Anges once it’s done, I’ll be able to think about the best way to update :)
21:12 Anges same arch => 32 bits vs 64 bits ?
21:15 pdurbin now they're both using Tux Paint: https://plus.google.com/109940583958656614840/posts/bp1rZhzweT5
21:21 melodie Anges if you have some packages compiled too specifically for a cpu, then you might meet with a few "illegal instruction" messages when you will start the said program
21:21 melodie if you copy a 32bits system to a machine having 64bits cpu this will work (most probably)
21:21 melodie if you try the other way around it won't.
21:22 melodie 32bits systems work on 64bits machines
21:22 melodie 64bits systems don't work on 32bits machines
21:24 Anges ok
21:25 Anges since I don’t use anything exotic on my netbook, I’m probably safe copying its system on my desktop
21:25 melodie you are safe doing it if you try first on a spare partition anyhow
21:25 melodie pdurbin very nice ! you have a beautiful family
21:26 Anges well, if I want a spare partition, I need to put away all my data (my disk is almost ful
21:26 Anges l)
21:26 melodie Anges you have talked about a nas
21:26 melodie ^^
21:27 Anges yes
21:27 Anges family pictures are in 3 or 4 places
21:27 melodie Anges you should try out freedup : it helps you find the files which you will and having in two different places in your hard drive
21:27 melodie -and
21:28 melodie you will have
21:28 Anges I know where they are
21:28 Anges I just need to be sure that I have ALL of them
21:28 Anges because some pictures are in only one spot, while others are in 3 places
21:29 Anges sometimes, they are called DSC….jpg, sometimes they are called 2012-10-25…
21:29 Anges doing it by hand feels safer
21:30 Anges but it is time consuming ;)
21:30 Anges pdurbin, https://plus.google.com/109940583958656614840/posts love these :)
21:31 Anges we do that too when we have time. And it’s usually eaten pretty fast!
21:32 Anges bonne nuit melodie, enjoy the end of the day pdurbin
21:32 melodie bonne nuit Anges
21:34 pdurbin_m melodie: thanks

21:42 melodie slystone pdurbin would understand in English better
21:42 slystone Sorry
21:42 slystone pdurbin_m: Hi!
21:42 pdurbin_m hi
21:42 melodie pdurbin, slystone has opened a new chan dedicated to the courses of the Linux Professional Institute : to help each other learning the different levels
21:43 slystone pdurbin_m: so I have an interest in the Linux certification, not for the sake of the certification, but for the content (I want to learn).
21:43 melodie the chan is #lpic-fr
21:43 pdurbin_m nice
21:43 slystone So melodie thought you would have some good advice for us.
21:43 slystone (how to organize ourselves, which tools to use, and so on)
21:44 slystone pdurbin_m: and I have registered lpic-en too, but we have no users yet.
21:44 melodie slystone thought we might use this one tool : http://lite.framapad.org/p/lpic and I was wondering if you would have some interesting suggests else than that ?
21:45 slystone some additional suggestions
21:46 pdurbin_m I love tools
21:47 pdurbin_m haven't heard of that one
21:47 slystone pdurbin_m: it's just an etherpad.
21:47 slystone (the light one)
21:48 pdurbin_m ah, ok
21:48 pdurbin_m I would say... don't cheat :)
21:48 pdurbin_m on the exams :)
21:49 slystone pdurbin_m: well, like I said, I have no interest in the exam.
21:49 slystone I don't work in IT, so I couldn't care less about the certification.
21:50 pdurbin_m ok
21:51 pdurbin_m don't help people cheat :)
21:51 slystone ><
21:52 pdurbin_m you wouldn't want LPI to come after you
21:52 pdurbin_m but if you keep it generic you should be fine
21:53 slystone haha, sarcasm detected!
21:54 pdurbin_m for q&a you could use osqa or shapado
21:55 slystone Thanks, I'll have a look!
21:56 pdurbin_m melodie: I've used mpd and mpc. they're great
21:56 melodie mpd : the sound server ?
21:56 slystone Same question
21:56 pdurbin_m yeah
21:56 melodie and mpc is a sound server as well ?
21:57 slystone Hum, I don't see the point of using a sound server… for a training on lp1 & 2
21:57 melodie slystone j'ai trouvé un des deux outils cités par pdurbin : http://www.osqa.net/
21:57 slystone Nice!
21:57 pdurbin_m no c for client
21:57 melodie slystone this might be a side discussion
21:58 pdurbin_m side. from before. sorry
21:58 melodie http://shapado.com/
21:58 slystone Oups, my bad!
21:58 melodie slystone dropcast - for getting mp3s onto your phone - http://beta.linuxvillage.net/index.php/topic,280.0.html
21:58 melodie not your fault you could not guess
21:59 pdurbin_m no, the pi posts mention mpd
21:59 melodie pdurbin this is from Seditio
22:00 melodie I met him on a chan and later in his village : as a matter of fact we are almost neighbours :D
22:00 slystone melodie: I had attended a workshop on Icecast. And professional radio stations also use Mpd (and Icecast).
22:00 melodie slystone you have a choice of tools now
22:00 slystone melodie: small world! ^^
22:00 melodie do you need anything more ?
22:01 melodie perhaps an account at some places such as tuxfamily or similar ?
22:02 pdurbin_m melodie: these http://irclog.perlgeek.de/linuxvillage/2013-04-07#i_6675327 ... but nevermind :)
22:02 slystone melodie: well, let's not get ahead of ourselves. I barely now myself where we're heading, so it's probably a good idea, but personaly I think it's a task for later.
22:03 melodie sure
22:03 melodie slystone legtux.org is a better place, when there is space for a new account
22:03 slystone I already have a blog hosted on Legtux (and some emails).
22:03 melodie you don't have to ask for permissions all the time
22:04 melodie ok !
22:04 melodie so you know Simon
22:04 slystone Yep! He's very nice!
22:05 melodie I was there since a pair of years already, this year I sent a contribution
22:05 melodie he is very good at what he does
22:05 slystone I sent one on my first year (2010), but not since (looking for a job right now).
22:05 slystone Yes he is.
22:06 slystone And he's at a good school too.
22:06 melodie what do you mean ? which school is that ?
22:06 slystone L'INSA (Lyon).
22:06 slystone (if he hasn't changed)
22:07 melodie ok
22:08 slystone melodie: do you still use redhsift?
22:10 melodie in Archlinux yes, in Ubuntu it is broken and does not start
22:10 slystone melodie: really? And error message displayed?
22:10 melodie I went to add my testimonial to a bug already reported among many related to it
22:10 slystone Erf!
22:10 melodie I look for the bug report link
22:11 slystone Well, I believe you, don't bother! ;)
22:12 melodie https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/redshift/+bug/893654
