15:40 melodie changes to come are available at the Ubuntu Openbox Remix thread on the http://beta.linuxvillage.net "Create masters" section

17:11 pdurbin melodie: how long will "beta" be in the url?
17:37 arthefact joined #linuxvillage
17:41 melodie hi pdurbin : until I decide to grab one thread I need to keep from http://www.linuxvillage.net then will ask to the other modos who did lots of work if we are good to go, then I will redirect the DNS and add a permanent redirect... if possible
17:45 pdurbin melodie: ok. makes sense
17:45 pdurbin melodie: I'm struggling with a forum problem :(
17:46 melodie which brand forum is it ?
17:46 melodie pdurbin ? phpBB ? SMF ? Another ?
17:47 melodie which forum ?
17:47 melodie our beta.linuxvillage.net forum ?
17:47 pdurbin no no
17:47 pdurbin this one: http://brooklineschools.freeforums.net
17:47 melodie is that your's ?
17:47 pdurbin no
17:48 pdurbin but I posted this: http://brooklineschools.freeforums.net/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1&page=1#4
17:48 pdurbin the thing I'm struggling with is data liberation
17:48 pdurbin melodie: does that term mean anything to you?
17:49 melodie hummm heard of it I think
17:49 melodie the problem with the types of forums such as freeforums and where we were before is that our databases don't belong to us and this is a real trap
17:50 melodie but it is not quite the same topic I guess
17:50 pdurbin exactly! a trap!
17:50 pdurbin I care about my data!~
17:50 melodie sure
17:50 pdurbin I don't want write anywhere if I can't get my data out
17:50 pdurbin pretty much, anyway :)
17:50 pdurbin want to, I mean
17:50 melodie in US there are places where hosting is at free cost or no cost, provided by people such as the ones in our French free software supporters network
17:51 pdurbin free but... can you get a backup of the database any time you want?
17:51 melodie yes I show you
17:52 melodie http://www.kegtux.org/?page=pageindex&lang=en
17:52 melodie you can read there
17:52 melodie we have full access to our database and can easily export it any time
17:52 melodie access to ftp also
17:52 melodie and I had found such places in US for other people too at another community
17:53 melodie there are many more, all are not performing, so they need to be first tested on a small scale
17:53 melodie have to go...
17:59 pdurbin interesting. thanks
18:31 melodie pdurbin I can try to find the adresses I had found last year, later
18:32 pdurbin melodie: for a forum host that will let me download the database?
18:34 coyotus joined #linuxvillage
18:37 melodie pdurbin for a hosting where you will have all features same as in a good professionnal one, hopefully
18:38 NoNa joined #linuxvillage
18:38 pdurbin melodie: I could host the forum myself, I guess. on my own server. but which forum software is easy to set up and maintain? (and is secure) :)
18:40 melodie none, however you could benefit of the steps we have already taken with smf and they have a good help forum and chan (forum when you can get the first access, which is not obvious with their kind of captcha)
18:40 melodie SMF
18:41 pdurbin ok
18:41 melodie phpBB is also very good and has good plugins for security, and I think people who know how to deal with trouble spams...
18:41 melodie yu
18:41 melodie you might want to test one then the other on your local server, to see what the configuration looks like ?
18:42 pdurbin yeah
18:42 pdurbin well, I'd test it with vagrant in a vm :)
18:43 melodie that sounds good
18:43 pdurbin this one: https://github.com/pdurbin/greptilian-vagrant
18:43 pdurbin a local version of my production server
18:44 melodie that sounds fun, I might want to give it a try some day
18:44 pdurbin sure
18:45 pdurbin you can make a copy of my server with it :)
18:45 melodie thing is I have 2 GB ram on my laptop, and my best machine is a tower with 4 Gb but a little noisy and I don't like to use it a long time
18:45 melodie and virtualbox'es need to be very light on my laptop
18:45 pdurbin ah
18:45 pdurbin my vm uses 1 GB of ram
18:46 pdurbin you can see that here: https://github.com/pdurbin/greptilian-vagrant/blob/master/Vagrantfile#L11
18:46 melodie If I setup 1 GB for a vm it's not enough left for my host to support virtualbox as a whole and it slows it all down
18:47 pdurbin :(
18:47 melodie even with zram, and even with swappiness configured at it's best
18:47 pdurbin you could try it with less... by editing that Vagrantfile
18:47 melodie the ideal range is 750 for the vm
18:48 melodie pdurbin I don't need to but I have seen you have show a tutorial about how to use it.
18:48 pdurbin yeah
18:48 melodie I have a suggest : what about adding the info to the tips and tricks section ?
18:48 pdurbin I hope it makes sense how to use it
18:48 melodie I read the first 4 or 5 lines, I seem to understand
18:49 pdurbin melodie: does this explain well enough how to use it? https://github.com/pdurbin/greptilian-vagrant/blob/master/readme.md
18:49 melodie this:
18:49 melodie "Patch and reboot (as root)
18:49 melodie yum -y update && reboot
18:49 melodie "
18:50 melodie is distro specific so I would suggest you add it under, such as "this is if you are using Fedora, and else adapt for your GNU/Linux distribution"
18:50 melodie or something of the like
18:51 melodie for more comments I will invite you to post it in tips and tricks and add at the end something to ask the people to answer if they have any questions.
18:51 pdurbin well, no... the point is that *I'm* the one who decides which distro is used... for this vagrant environment
18:51 melodie pdurbin ok
18:52 pdurbin people are welcome to fork my vagrant environment and re-write it to work with their favorite distro
18:52 melodie ok
18:52 melodie so you let people know that this setup is Fedora specific... if you decide you post it to tips and tricks of course :)
18:53 melodie have you seen Yoshi's feedback after trying Fedora 18 ?
18:53 pdurbin it's centos specific
18:54 pdurbin I did see Yoshi's post. yes
19:43 melodie pdurbin this one as well ? Fuduntu - http://beta.linuxvillage.net/index.php/topic,288.0.html

22:31 pdurbin melodie: any experience with http://vanillaforums.org ?
22:32 melodie no but I can have a look
22:32 pdurbin it's forum software, newer than phpBB and the rest
22:34 melodie it costs money http://vanillaforums.com/plans
22:34 pdurbin no, it's open source
22:34 pdurbin I cloned this repo and got it working in a vm: https://github.com/vanillaforums/Garden
22:35 melodie where is the archive ?
22:35 pdurbin archive?
22:35 melodie open source does not mean no cost - it can be no cost
22:36 melodie where are the sources ? can you use their software to make your own website and manage it ?
22:36 pdurbin the source is here: https://github.com/vanillaforums/Garden
22:37 melodie how did you find it ?
22:38 pdurbin melodie: http://vanillaforums.org/docs/github
22:39 melodie pdurbin how will you update your forum, know when updates are available, add mods ?
22:39 melodie is there a community to support new users ?
22:39 pdurbin right now i'm using this branch: https://github.com/vanillaforums/Garden/tree/2.1
22:40 pdurbin I would switch to 2.2 when it comes out
22:41 melodie how do you fancy how updates will influence the life of a live forum where people can come any time of the day and night, while you are going to be updating ?
22:41 melodie do you have information about that ?
22:41 pdurbin buh. I have no idea :)
22:41 melodie what tools are provided for backups ?
22:42 pdurbin it's a mysql database
22:42 melodie I can tell you how SMF works because we have been experiencing this for some time now
22:42 melodie we also have mysql database and also two additional tools, one in the admin and one in the admin of our host + ftp
22:43 melodie when you update you need the database AND a fresh copy of the full content of the forum before starting, incase some file in the update makes it wrong
22:44 melodie you would also want to download your db export as an archive, not in plain text which means with the actual phpmadmin (if you use it) you have to click to the extended interface button.
22:45 melodie I get either a "zip" or a "tgz" or a "tar.bz2" anything but not a text file because it can be corrupted while downloading.
22:45 melodie not always but it can happen
22:46 melodie pdurbin here are 19 open source forums available for demo with a presentation : http://www.opensourcecms.com/scripts/show.php?catid=5&category=Forums
22:46 melodie (have fun! :D)
22:47 pdurbin heh. thanks
22:47 melodie pdurbin Vanilla is in there too! second page :D
22:49 melodie pdurbin if you can find a few forums using currently Vanilla it might help to see what it can look like also
22:49 melodie ok going now
22:49 melodie good evening
22:51 pdurbin you too
22:51 melodie time to sleep here, it's - hours later. :D
