13:47 Yoshi2889 Ola
13:48 melodie hello Yoshi2889 !
13:48 melodie my son asks if you talk French, you don't, do you ?
13:48 Yoshi2889 I can understand it, but I can't type/speak it
13:49 melodie oh ok
13:50 Yoshi2889 So, he wants a new GPU
13:50 melodie Yoshi2889 we are looking at some nvidia cards at amazon.fr and some advice would be nice
13:50 Yoshi2889 What does he do with his (I assume) desktop?
13:50 melodie this is my machine which I leave to him on vacations and some week-ends so he has a good machine to play with (no windows)
13:50 melodie here is the lshw and lspci:
13:51 melodie http://pastebin.fr/27103
13:51 melodie http://pastebin.fr/27104
13:51 melodie the gpu it has for now is nvidia 8400gs, with a bus of 64bits
13:52 melodie we want to buy a nvidia gpu a little more powerful, with a larger bus, and want it to be less than 100 euros
13:52 Yoshi2889 GeForce 8400 GS eh
13:52 melodie I assume you know a bit about it, as you said you do play games sometimes ?
13:53 Yoshi2889 Yeah
13:53 Yoshi2889 Can you afford a 120 euros?
13:53 melodie when I bought this card it was for another machine/motherboard which has a terrible card inside, a Chrome 9
13:53 melodie perhaps, why ?
13:54 Yoshi2889 If you can afford 120 euros you'll be able to get a GeForce 650 Ti
13:54 Yoshi2889 Maybe even a 650 Ti Boost
13:54 Yoshi2889 Those are pretty powerful and they'll suffice for a couple of years if your son doesn't do extreme gaming
13:55 melodie what would extreme gaming be ?
13:55 Yoshi2889 http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/330878/msi-n650ti-1gd5-oc-v1.html
13:55 Yoshi2889 Like 3D games (think of Battlefield 3)
13:55 Yoshi2889 (I know you don't speak dutch, but take a look at the prices)
13:56 melodie ok I see
13:56 Yoshi2889 That card is able to run some of the newer 3D games, though
13:57 Yoshi2889 So it really depends on the power you need
13:57 melodie Yoshi2889 for now he plays a few online games such as Ghost Recon online, World of Tank ...
13:58 Yoshi2889 Okay
13:58 melodie he does not buy games at the moment
13:58 melodie he is only 13 and does not have much to spend
13:58 Yoshi2889 Well, with Steam for Linux available, he might get into gaming real fast
13:59 melodie not obvious, the engine is there but what about games and data ? Only one game is free of cost for it, I was told
13:59 melodie fortress 4 or something of the kind
13:59 Yoshi2889 Team Fortress 2 is free indeed
13:59 melodie ok
13:59 Yoshi2889 My laptop with Intel HD Graphics 3000 runs it just fine :P
14:00 melodie therefore to play that, my geforce 8400 gs should be just fine ?
14:00 melodie I don't think it is less powerful, I have Intel too in my lappy
14:00 Yoshi2889 Yes, the 8400 GS should be just fine
14:00 Yoshi2889 It would probably perform better than the Intel graphics
14:01 Yoshi2889 So it is definitely able to run it ;)
14:01 Yoshi2889 I have a GeForce 7600 GS lying around and it plays TF2 and such fine
14:01 Yoshi2889 Same with a 9400 GT
14:01 melodie I have posted about games at the forum...
14:02 melodie Games under GNU/Linux - http://beta.linuxvillage.net/index.php/topic,302.msg2043.html#msg2043
14:02 melodie tell you just incase you want to join the discussion
14:02 Yoshi2889 Thanks, those look interesting
14:02 Yoshi2889 I'll take a look in a sec
14:03 melodie I look at a website where the prices are lower, now, will see how much they charge for the same card you have just show to me
14:05 Yoshi2889 Okay
14:06 melodie what is more important do you think ? memory of the gpu, or the width of the bus ?
14:06 melodie it seems the best price they have would be 129 euros for the same card you have shown to me
14:07 Yoshi2889 Memory really is only useful in multi-monitor setups; 1 GB will suffice for a single monitor, 2 GB for two, 3 GB for three, etc.
14:07 melodie http://www.topachat.com/pages/produits_cat_est_micro_puis_rubrique_est_wgfx_pcie_puis_mc_est_geforce+650+ti.html
14:07 melodie oh ok
14:08 melodie do you have any idea how the type of memory is related ? I mean this:
14:08 melodie here:
14:08 melodie http://www.amazon.fr/Asus-GT640-2GD3-Graphique-Geforce-PCI-Express/dp/B0087YADCG/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1366465028&sr=1-1&amp;keywords=carte+graphique+nvidia#productDetails
14:08 melodie it says "type of memory":
14:08 melodie "Type de mémoire: DDR3"
14:09 melodie my machine has SDRAM memory
14:09 Yoshi2889 GDDR5 is much faster than DDR3
14:09 melodie and this other GPU:
14:09 Yoshi2889 It's just speed
14:09 melodie http://www.amazon.fr/MSI-N630GT-MD4GD3-Graphique-Geforce-PCI-Express/dp/B00896KEXU/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1366465028&amp;sr=1-2&keywords=carte+graphique+nvidia
14:09 melodie Type de mémoire de l'adaptateur graphique: DDR3-SDRAM
14:09 Yoshi2889 It's still probably just DDR3
14:10 melodie Yoshi2889 I was just wondering if it was compliant with the motherboard and the type of memory on the machine but I don't quite see how this is related
14:10 Yoshi2889 I'd go with the ASUS GT 640, then
14:10 melodie is it related to the existing hardware, or not related ?
14:10 Yoshi2889 The memory on the machine, no.
14:10 Yoshi2889 Motherboard, maybe
14:10 melodie ah !
14:10 Yoshi2889 What motherboard is it?
14:11 melodie http://pastebin.fr/27103
14:11 melodie look at the first lines
14:11 melodie produit: GF615M-P33 V2(MS-7597)
14:11 melodie fabriquant: MSI
14:12 Yoshi2889 This one? http://www.msi.com/product/mb/GF615M-P33.html
14:12 melodie this one: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/GF615M-P33-V2.html
14:13 Yoshi2889 Well, the card will fit on, but it probably won't work at maximum speed
14:13 Yoshi2889 The PCI-Express version of your motherboard is v1.1, while the version of the card is v2.0
14:14 melodie I had not seen that...
14:15 melodie where in the page does it show ?
14:15 Yoshi2889 http://www.msi.com/product/mb/GF615M-P33-V2.html#/?div=Basic
14:16 Yoshi2889 Look for "PCI-E Gen"
14:16 Yoshi2889 Gen 1 = v1.x, Gen 2 = v2.x, Gen 3 = v3.x
14:16 melodie http://www.msi.com/product/mb/GF615M-P33-V2.html#?div=Detail
14:16 melodie ok I look
14:17 melodie ok and in the detailed one I see also "One PCI Express 1.0 x16 slot."
14:17 Yoshi2889 Ugh 1.0 even
14:18 melodie so I need to find a gpu which allows using v 1.0 pci-e ...
14:18 melodie didn't know that
14:18 Yoshi2889 Well, you can buy the graphics card, but I would suggest saving up for a new system
14:19 Yoshi2889 Let me put something together which might work
14:19 Yoshi2889 Well actually
14:20 melodie yes ?
14:20 Yoshi2889 I think a Pentium with built-in graphics will suffice for your needs
14:20 Yoshi2889 If you want to keep the AMD route, AMD A4 or A6 would be your best bet
14:20 melodie then I'd say the machine as it is also should be ok for his needs
14:21 Yoshi2889 Yeah, but you want to upgrade it no?
14:21 melodie he has a limited amount to spend, so I told him he should start with some components. such as a dedicated keybaord, mouse, and perhaps a screen
14:21 Yoshi2889 Hmm
14:22 melodie that was an idea I had, but if the GPU is not the right way to go, no problem with that
14:22 Yoshi2889 Yeah. If he has enough power with this system I'd say buy that equipment and nothing more
14:22 melodie I think if he has the peripherals he could buy the components when he will be older and build his own tower
14:22 Yoshi2889 Save up for a completely new system for later
14:22 melodie right
14:22 Yoshi2889 Yes indeed
14:23 Yoshi2889 I remember that my current system with i5 760, 4 GB RAM, a Gigabyte motherboard and a Sparkle GeForce 560 Ti was around 600 euros
14:23 melodie he has a gift check on amazon
14:24 Yoshi2889 Not even counting the PSU and the HDD with it since I stole those from the old system
14:24 melodie ok
14:25 melodie how much power does your PSU provide ?
14:25 Yoshi2889 550 Watts
14:25 melodie ok
14:26 melodie about keyboard and mice, what do you think about these ones ? (random choice in the ones which look among the not so expensive)
14:26 melodie http://www.amazon.fr/Perixx-PX-2000FR-Clavier-gaming-programmables/dp/B009HDDRCO/ref=pd_cart_recs2
14:27 melodie http://www.amazon.fr/Perixx-MX-2000-Souris-laser-gaming/dp/B0083H4NG4/ref=pd_bxgy_computers_img_y
14:27 Yoshi2889 I just use a 7 year old mechanical keyboard myself, it works fine :P
14:27 Yoshi2889 But for gaming gear that looks fine
14:28 melodie what is "gaming gear" ?
14:29 melodie I'll be back in a minute...
14:29 Yoshi2889 Gaming mouse and keyboard
14:31 melodie :)
14:31 melodie ok
14:31 melodie Yoshi2889 thank you very much for your help
14:31 melodie we have a fine weather today here. we will go out for a walk now.
14:31 melodie :)
14:31 melodie see you soon
14:31 Yoshi2889 You're welcome :)
14:32 Yoshi2889 Cya

15:03 pdurbin Yoshi2889: do you think SMF could support Markdown?
15:05 Yoshi2889 Possibly
15:05 Yoshi2889 With a lot of work it could
15:05 pdurbin oh
15:05 pdurbin melodie: you and I were hoping there was a mod for it
15:05 Yoshi2889 Unfortunately there isn't
15:05 pdurbin :(
15:05 Yoshi2889 Not that I am aware of, at least
15:06 pdurbin bbcode feels very retro to me... very old school
15:06 Yoshi2889 That's because it is ;)
15:06 pdurbin :)
15:07 pdurbin Yoshi2889: did I already ask you if you have any interest in Discourse? http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2013/02/civilized-discourse-construction-kit.html
15:08 Yoshi2889 I recall reading the name on the forums
15:08 pdurbin ok
15:09 pdurbin what do you think? it's supposed to be more modern than SMF, phpBB, etc.
15:10 Yoshi2889 It's okay, much like Vanilla
15:10 Yoshi2889 http://vanillaforums.org/
15:10 Yoshi2889 I personally hate not having boards and such :P
15:10 pdurbin vanilla is *way* easier to set up
15:11 Yoshi2889 Haven't tried installing Discourse, it is in development stage
15:12 Yoshi2889 Finally my laptop finished booting from its USB stick :D
15:12 pdurbin yeah. I guess I should be more patient
15:12 Yoshi2889 I think
15:12 Yoshi2889 Ah there we go
15:12 * Yoshi2889 wipes HDD and installs Elementary
15:13 Yoshi2889 Hope the freezing issue is fixed
15:14 Yoshi2889 Hmm I can install it alongside my Ubuntu installation too...
15:15 Yoshi2889 Meh, elementary only ftw
15:15 pdurbin elementary?
15:16 Yoshi2889 http://elementaryos.org/journal/when-its-ready
15:16 Yoshi2889 It's awesome
15:19 Yoshi2889 So I'm installing elementary, I'm going on IRC on there
15:19 Yoshi2889 brb
15:36 pdurbin here's the post he mentioned from the formum: Discourse by Civilized Discourse Construction Kit, Inc. - http://beta.linuxvillage.net/index.php/topic,253.0.html

17:09 melodie pdurbin there are two ways of using bbcode ast SMF forums, you can choose wysiwig or the other mode; you can test it by choosing one or the other in your profile

18:58 melodie pdurbin_m welcome, did you find it useful ?
19:05 pdurbin_m melodie: well, I still prefer IRC :)
19:06 pdurbin_m melodie: you still prefer forums?
19:06 melodie I don't prefer, they have a different use, as I told you before... on the forum
19:07 melodie pdurbin_m each time you visit the forum you could hit this link:
19:07 melodie http://beta.linuxvillage.net/index.php?action=unread
19:08 melodie all messages posted would not go in an irc chan, and all would not be easy to find again, well our forums have section and we can seek something in sections, with the advanced search button
19:09 melodie and we can answer several hours to several months later, to a topic we want to participate to, this is easy
19:10 pdurbin_m yes, forums have a slower pace, which is an advantage over IRC sometimes
19:11 pdurbin_m and sometimes a disadvantage :)
19:24 melodie this is why I am not choosing but using both
19:25 melodie :p

21:06 * Yoshi2889 runs
21:06 melodie :D
21:06 NoNa mario bros *_*
21:06 melodie Yoshi2889 now my son has found his keyboard his mouse, cask and is searching for a screen
21:06 melodie :D
21:06 Yoshi2889 cask = case? :P
21:07 melodie no
21:07 Yoshi2889 Anyways nice :)
21:07 melodie headphones
21:07 melodie sorry
21:07 Yoshi2889 Ohh lol
21:07 melodie the mouse:
21:07 Yoshi2889 Nice
21:07 melodie http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00AAQRNQ8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2PGPJL0BBLHLX
21:07 Yoshi2889 Screens are not cheap, let me tell you that
21:07 melodie the keyboard:
21:07 melodie http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00A8LPN3U/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1IXDK1EB53BXC
21:07 Yoshi2889 Nice set :)
21:07 melodie yellow headphones:

21:08 melodie and he tries to find a monitor under 100 euros : there is one for 86
21:08 Yoshi2889 Lol nice, that's something different you don't see everyday :P
21:08 melodie how is that ?
21:08 melodie something different you don't see everyday ?
21:09 Yoshi2889 Finding a good monitor for under 100 euro's is a big challenge, I've been searching for one for a while now
21:09 Yoshi2889 Not everyone wears yellow headphones :P
21:09 melodie blue mouse, red keyboard, yellow headphones
21:09 Yoshi2889 Heh
21:09 melodie XD
21:09 melodie I show the screen he wants
21:09 Yoshi2889 Just like my bike, blue frame, green bell, orange bag
21:10 melodie http://www.amazon.fr/Samsung-SyncMaster-S19B150-Moniteur-MPEG4/dp/B00754XV0K/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1G0P08WHNB98J
21:10 melodie nice bike ! is it a typical Dutch bike ?
21:12 melodie what do you think about this screen ? not too expensive for the size and such ?
21:13 melodie 5 ms at time of response...
21:13 Yoshi2889 Looks good
21:14 melodie not sure if it is brilliant or not brilliant though (don't wa t
21:14 melodie w
21:14 melodie don't want him to use a shiny screen...)
21:14 Yoshi2889 You want him to use a matte screen?
21:15 Yoshi2889 Probably the borders will be shiny, but the screen itself will be matte
21:18 melodie Yoshi2889 yes, matte should be the right word, in French it's "mat"
21:18 Yoshi2889 Same in Dutch
21:18 melodie ok :)
21:19 Yoshi2889 So Elementary has been running stable on my laptop now for the past couple of hours
21:19 melodie it's nice to have you here, when on IRC you should come more often :)
21:19 melodie good !
21:19 Yoshi2889 I added this channel to my auto-join list ;)
21:19 melodie have you considered what I suggested at the forum ?
21:19 melodie thanks :)
21:19 Yoshi2889 I am not a fan of Enlightenment myself, I find it creepy to use
21:20 Yoshi2889 Like something isn't right :P
21:20 melodie oh I thought you loved it, for the fun gadgets
21:20 melodie when will you be trying Bento2 mini ? :D
21:20 Yoshi2889 Hehe I am a die hard fan of Elementary :P
21:20 melodie oh oh
21:20 melodie what is the difference ?
21:21 Yoshi2889 Oh, I have it installed in a virtual machine on my desktop
21:21 melodie which version ? large, small or smallest ?
21:21 Yoshi2889 Small
21:21 Yoshi2889 I think
21:21 melodie 550 MB ?
21:21 Yoshi2889 Take a peek at this page for Elementary: http://elementaryos.org/journal/when-its-ready
21:21 Yoshi2889 550 MB yes
21:22 melodie atm that is probably the best choice, but the next one is going to be the best :D
21:22 Yoshi2889 Hehe :P
21:23 Yoshi2889 I'm looking forward to the time Elementary OS goes stable
21:23 melodie it will be lighter on resource as is the 537 MB version, will have again network-manager instead of wicd
21:23 melodie and the desktop will be setup a bit like this one:
21:23 melodie http://meets.free.fr/Downloads/debian/images/bureau-du-jour.png
21:23 melodie :D
21:23 melodie with the left panel auto-hiding
21:23 Yoshi2889 Unity-like interface?
21:24 melodie without unity
21:24 melodie :D
21:24 Yoshi2889 Lol nice
21:24 melodie all supra light...
21:25 melodie top panel is tint2 and left panel is xfce4-panel, which allows doing more different things than lxpanel does
21:25 melodie figure out:
21:25 Yoshi2889 Sorry all of that tells me little to nothing :P
21:25 Yoshi2889 I'm not familiar with OpenBox, XFCE or LXDE
21:26 melodie opening the /usr/share/applications directory in the file manager, then just drag and drop icons from there to the left panel (one under the other), then move the icons as you like, add a few separators: you're done!
21:26 melodie I know well enough all three, but could never get used to KDE, and even quite unfamiliar with Gnome
21:29 ben2morrow joined #linuxvillage
21:32 Yoshi2889 I like GNOME 2, GNOME 3 is meh. KDE is good...but too bloated
21:32 Yoshi2889 Pantheon is sexy :D
21:32 Yoshi2889 But you can't drag apps in the launcher?
21:33 Yoshi2889 Oh wow AppCenter is almost ready
21:33 melodie the directory /usr/share/applications contains the desktop files, which in the file manager are represented by their icons
21:34 melodie therefore doing a drag and drop of the file desktops just creates launchers on the panel (like a copy paste from one to the other)
21:34 Yoshi2889 Ohh those are created by the process that runs when installing something
21:34 melodie not created : installed
21:34 Yoshi2889 I call that the same :P
21:35 melodie the desktop files belong to the packages created by the packagers, it is either the devs upsream or the packagers when deskop files are not already written, who create the desktop files (aka launchers)
21:35 melodie you call that the same because you never missed an entry in the menus, but when you will, you will know that you have to modify one, or to create it if it does not exist
21:36 Yoshi2889 Something completely irrelevant, but http://elementaryos.org/journal/introducing-appcenter < That's just plain awesome. The apps in the AppCenter will be reviewed beforehand, just like we do over at SMF
21:36 Yoshi2889 When I am missing something I just punch in the name in a terminal lolz
21:38 Yoshi2889 But, good luck with your project :)
21:38 Yoshi2889 I'm sure going to keep an eye on it
