00:12 arthefact bonne nuit @tous
00:13 melodie bonne nuit arthefact
00:14 melodie oui une prochaine vois
00:14 melodie fois

Hi to all gnu/linux village people!
15:38 jovando joined #linuxvillage
15:39 jovando ok, better here :-)
15:40 jovando melodie: ok, so you know what to do?
15:40 melodie jovando I think you have several kernels installed in it, and two drivers, but the kernel installed last does not have the nvidia blob installed
15:41 melodie I have questions, can you answer to two simple questions?
15:42 jovando ok, yesterday i was already able to boot one time - and after throw away the old kernels, i have the boot problem again....
15:42 jovando yes, what are the questions?
15:43 jovando now i have just one kernel installed, because i deleted all the others
15:43 melodie what command line did you use to delete them?
15:44 melodie sudo apt-get remove --purge "linux-image-blabla" ?
15:44 jovando can i anyhow see the chat from yesterday? - forgot it to save
15:44 melodie jovando yes, it is logged, just have a look at the topic
15:45 jovando melodie: what does that mean, that it is logged?
15:46 jovando ok, i know, sry
15:46 melodie jovando please try to think before speaking, you are 27, not 13 years old :D
15:48 jovando ok, can i also see the history of the logged konversation?
15:50 melodie of course, of the conversations for we are not all using KDE here. ^^
15:50 melodie well I guess you might even be the only one :p
15:50 jovando oh, i have no kde at this laptop (where i write now)
15:50 jovando kde is on the laptop i cant boot...
15:52 jovando melodie: how did you mean: "just have a look at the topic"? is there a button where i can find the history of irq via topic?
15:54 melodie jovando you are a bit slow do you know? You should perhaps think of something to improve it
15:54 melodie http://linuxvillage.org :: canal LinuxVillage :: log: http://irclog.perlgeek.de/linuxvillage :: http://irclog.spacecompute.com/linuxvillage
15:54 melodie this is the topic
15:54 melodie click on the links after the word "log"
15:54 jovando ok, thx but i could just find our conversation
15:55 melodie jovando I don't mean to be offending do you know? I really want to be of some help to you but it is difficult because you do not listen/read
15:55 melodie yes you can click to the links, well this one for example: http://irclog.perlgeek.de/linuxvillage
15:55 melodie and browse in the calendar
15:57 NoNa joined #linuxvillage
15:57 melodie salut NoNa ! :)
15:57 NoNa salut melodie
15:57 jovando melodie: ok, i do read, but i really often dont know how to understand - this is a maybe a disadvantage of my personality...
15:57 jovando ok, i found log
15:58 jovando at last: genii gave me many instructions
15:58 jovando but i think it was in a query
15:58 melodie see you have two ways to deal with things, either you try to understand or you just follow instructions and you will never be able to progress. choose your way
16:00 jovando yes of course i try, and if i see the conclussion of something i remember
16:00 jovando ok, so i wasnt able to chroot from live cd
16:00 jovando so we went into recovery mode
16:01 jovando there we had access to the system
16:01 jovando we updated a kernel and then it worked 1 time to boot kde
16:02 jovando after that we deleted all kernel && installed the latest one....
16:02 jovando but after that i was again unable to boot into kde
16:04 jovando melodie: will the queries also be saved=
16:04 jovando ?
16:05 jovando i give you some screenshots... om
16:05 melodie jovando I don't know, you would ask pdurbin about that
16:06 melodie which one is the latest kernel you installed?
16:06 jovando pdurbin: hello, will the queries also be saved?
16:06 jovando 3.2.0-56-generic
16:06 melodie jovando when he will be around he will see your message and will catch up
16:06 jovando it is the only one now
16:06 jovando ok
16:07 melodie I have one more question : why did you install a distribution which is not an official one? Is there a particular reason?
16:08 jovando you mean the 3.2.0-56-generic? or the test kernel?
16:09 jovando grub: http://imagebin.org/277536
16:10 melodie a gnu/linux distribution is an operating system provided with additional programs, ready to be installed
16:10 melodie so I am talking about your linux box
16:10 melodie not just the kernel
16:10 melodie I am talking about "Netrunner"
16:11 melodie jovando now to the issue:
16:11 jovando this is a picture of my actual state: http://imagebin.org/277537
16:12 melodie I have noticed that you had an issue related to the graphics, well recently I could not boot to my Ubuntu done from a mini anymore for the same reason, so I accessed it from another system, because I have several gnu/linux systems on the same machine. (so I don't need to use a live cd)
16:13 jovando melodie: no there is no particular reason. at the time (2 years ago) i decided to try linux. i looked at the distribution tree and took one of the latest one (i saw netrunner) and said: letz try this one
16:13 melodie yes I see, the message in red says "load fallback graphics devices "fail""
16:15 jovando yes i think that is the main problem
16:15 melodie ok and to fix things you said you would not just re install, because you had a hard time installing applications, but this is strange in my opinion, because installing appliations in linux and especially Ubuntu is just a matter of firing Synaptic or the Software Center, and select what you want, then click "apply"
16:15 melodie so what did you do as far as installing programs is concerned?
16:15 jovando yesterday genii helped me to create a new xorg.0.conf file
16:15 jovando and we also changed someting in grub
16:15 melodie did you need something special in the system?
16:15 melodie omg!
16:15 melodie where is genii?
16:16 melodie is he/she on a chan?
16:16 jovando one moment maybe we talked at kubuntu offtopic channel
16:17 melodie if you see him can you invite him here so I understand what was done?
16:17 melodie and will you answer to the simple question : how did  you install programs and which ones?
16:19 jovando you mean at all? i install my programs via synaptic or muon
16:19 jovando the special i need is: compiz-fusion
16:19 jovando and screenlet
16:20 ben2morrow joined #linuxvillage
16:20 ben2morrow joined #linuxvillage
16:20 jovando about genii: i think he was at kubuntu and kubuntu-offtopic channel, but i cant find him
16:22 jovando however, we have changed the xorg and the error of: starting load fallback graphics devices dont appear any more.
16:22 jovando but it is still not starting
16:22 melodie you don't need compiz-fusion, nor screenlet, unless you absolutely need to freak out the mac users. ;D
16:22 jovando the new errors about vboxdrv and saned disabled : http://imagebin.org/277537
16:23 jovando melodie: oh, sry it is hard to read in this picture, i will take a new shot
16:23 melodie no
16:23 melodie not useful
16:23 melodie I saw
16:23 jovando ok
16:24 melodie please listen because we won't use the whole week on that, ok?
16:24 jovando can i anyhow switch from nvidia 304 driver to nvidia 319 driver?
16:25 jovando i have 6 different nvidia drivers at "additional drivers":
16:26 melodie what happens is that there is a conflict between graphic drivers, and besides there are some modules which fail to be loaded, but vboxdrv is not essential, so this is what I was trying desperately to get from you yesterday:
16:26 melodie the messages from the system (also called logs) which allow to see precisely what is wrong
16:27 melodie and instead of listening and throwing the @£$*%@@@@!! commands you insisted on doing the chroot before getting those files to me
16:27 melodie jovando you need to remove all nvidia drivers, and reinstall nouveau
16:27 jovando (i am not sure if this is right but i think: 304, 314, 319 and 304 update, 314 update and 319 update)
16:27 melodie I guess your distro relies on 12.04 ?
16:27 jovando good idea
16:27 melodie does it?
16:27 jovando i think so, it is the LTS version
16:27 jovando of kubuntu
16:27 melodie so yes
16:28 melodie let's have a look at packages ubuntu for the name of the nouveau packages
16:28 jovando let me guess: sudo apt-get remove nvidia-drivers
16:28 melodie bad guess
16:29 jovando ok one moment
16:29 melodie you will list all the nvidia packages installed with "dpkg -S nvidia"
16:29 melodie and from there you will have the exact name of each one
16:30 jovando http://pastebin.com/xCV8UdGK
16:30 jovando oh sry
16:31 jovando it dont work
16:31 jovando melodie: there is very long output
16:31 jovando can i pastebinit?
16:31 melodie yes, that would be a good idea
16:31 melodie are you really in the distro now?
16:32 jovando it is tty1
16:32 jovando and the picture above was tty7
16:33 jovando so it should be in the distro, shouldnt it?
16:33 jovando http://pastbin.com/PgB74aNg
16:34 jovando http://pastebin.com/PgB74aNg
16:34 jovando melodie: ok now you can see
16:36 melodie you should take some courses, do you know?
16:36 melodie you have left all the headers of the previous kernels, which take lots of un necessary space, you have installed several versions of nvidia which is why there is a conflict
16:37 melodie when you don't know which version fits you try just "nvidia" which is the current one, if that does not work just use nouveau
16:38 melodie if you want to dig further you go to the nvidia.com/gforce.com website to see which version number is the closest version number available for your graphic card in linux : be smart!
16:39 melodie jovando please try this command line, which might help filter, then paste again the result to pastebin:
16:39 jovando ok, are there some courses in video?
16:39 melodie dpkg -S nvidia  | cut -d":" -f2
16:39 melodie you need specific courses, adapted to your level
16:40 melodie this command line is supposed to filter the output so that we get only the names of the packages, without the list of files installed.
16:40 melodie it will help us with the removal of these packages
16:41 jovando http://pastebin.com/0ZP0VBTQ
16:43 jovando oh, it is not really smaller. the command i gave was: "sudo dpkg -S nvidia | cut -d":" -f2 | pastebinit"
16:43 jovando was that right?
16:44 melodie jovando this is the reverse of what I was expecting, I go back to the other chan to tell the buddy who provided me with the command line
16:44 melodie not your fault, you have done well
16:44 melodie jovando try this:
16:44 melodie dpkg -S nvidia  | cut -d":" -f1
16:44 melodie dpkg -S nvidia  | cut -d":" -f1 | pastebinit
16:45 jovando oh no, i have reached the maximum of pastes per 24 h
16:46 jovando this is not good
16:47 jovando i cant pastebinit any more :-(
16:48 melodie OO*
16:48 melodie never seen that before
16:48 melodie dpkg -S nvidia  | cut -d":" -f1 > nvidialist.txt
16:48 jovando is there a pastebin alternative?
16:48 melodie then scp the file somewhere
16:49 melodie this: > nvidialist.txt will send the output to a file having this name
16:50 melodie then you can send the file to "scp nvidialist.txt jovando@ip_of_your_other_machine:/home/jovando"
16:50 melodie this way you get the file in the machine from where you are talking to us here
16:50 jovando ok
16:50 jovando i will try it
16:50 melodie where the "ip_of_your... " can be for example 192.168.2.88
16:51 melodie or I don't know what, just check with the command "ipconfig"
16:51 melodie and you will have the ip number facing "eth0" or "eth1" or "wlan0" or such if you are using wifi
16:52 jovando melodie: yes i use wifi - wlan0 dont work
16:52 melodie I don't care, just do that and scp your file to your working machine
16:52 melodie ifconfig will tell you the ip
16:52 melodie of the working machine
16:53 jovando ok, thx - found
16:53 jovando it is 192.168.0.105
16:54 melodie ok
16:54 melodie do
16:54 melodie dpkg -S nvidia  | cut -d":" -f1 > nvidialist.txt
16:54 melodie then
16:54 melodie scp nvidialist.txt jovando@192.168.0.105:/home/jovando
16:55 melodie if jovando is the user name you have in the system which you are using to talk here
16:56 melodie jovando try also this one:
16:56 melodie dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia | awk '{print $2}' > nvidialist2.txt
16:56 melodie then
16:56 melodie scp nvidialist2.txt jovando@192.168.0.105:/home/jovando
16:56 jovando ok
16:57 jovando melodie: there is a error: ssh: connect to host 192.168.0.105 port 22: Connection refused
16:57 melodie this is from "wxl" at the lubuntu chan
16:57 jovando lost connection
16:57 melodie you have to start ssh on your destination machine
16:57 melodie sudo service ssh start
16:58 melodie if you don't have it you must also install openssh-server
17:00 melodie on the machine where you send the command from
17:00 melodie at least
17:01 jovando there are some errors: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6432896/
17:02 melodie E: Could not get lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
17:02 melodie E: Unable to lock directory /var/cache/apt/archives/
17:02 melodie would you first close either or Synaptic or the update manager, whatever is running?
17:02 jovando is this because of my distro update i do now on ubuntu?
17:03 melodie of course
17:03 melodie the package manager can't be started twice
17:04 jovando of course
17:04 jovando omg - it takes 30 min
17:04 jovando i cant cancel it, can i ?
17:05 jovando isnt it a good time for dinner?
17:06 melodie if you cancel it while it has started to extract packages you can break it, if it is just downloading you can cancel
17:06 melodie and restart later
17:07 melodie here it is 6 pm so it is not dinner time yet
17:07 jovando ok, and when i do a distro update next time, does it beginn from start?
17:08 jovando i mean does it start from beginning next time?
17:09 NoNa joined #linuxvillage
17:10 melodie I don't know, I suppose it depends how Synaptic is configured. Just check that the preferences> files tab allow keeping the packages in the cache
17:10 melodie Mo0O ? Goodbox ?
17:11 melodie http://linuxvillage.org/blog/2013/11/15/bento-ubuntu-remix-rc/
17:11 jovando ok, it is just because i now wait since 2 hours for downloading
17:11 melodie jovando you can restart it before going to sleep
17:11 melodie iel
17:11 melodie ie:
17:12 jovando ok, i will cancel it
17:12 melodie I don't know what is the right command line to shutdown a system in Ubuntu now. :?
17:13 jovando sudo shutdown -r now
17:13 jovando sry, sudo shutdown now
17:13 jovando i think that works
17:14 melodie -r is for reboot
17:14 melodie -h is for halt but I am not sure how it is setup
17:15 melodie I ask at lubuntu
17:15 melodie because it is a special system now
17:15 jovando http://paste.ubuntu.com/6432954/
17:15 jovando it is still the error: unrecognised service
17:15 melodie do
17:16 melodie sudo apt-get install openssh
17:16 jovando output: E: Unable to locate package openssh
17:17 jovando should i maybe do a restart?
17:17 melodie do
17:17 melodie sudo apt-get update
17:17 melodie then do
17:17 melodie sudo apt-cache search ssh
17:18 melodie which will list the packages names containing the chain character "ssh"
17:18 jovando ok
17:20 jovando melodie: here is the output: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6432970/
17:21 melodie so do:
17:21 melodie sudo apt-get install openssh-client openssh-server
17:23 jovando ok done: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6432980/
17:23 melodie do you sometimes read the output of the console? If not you should always read:
17:23 melodie The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
17:23 melodie gir1.2-unique-3.0 libunique-3.0-0
17:23 melodie Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
17:24 melodie you can type "sudo apt-get autoremove" to clean your system
17:24 jovando melodie: ok done
17:25 melodie line ssh start/running, process 6864 /// good, now you can go back to the other machine and throw the scp command which was failing
17:25 melodie <melodie> dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia | awk '{print $2}' > nvidialist2.txt
17:25 melodie <melodie> then
17:25 melodie <melodie> scp nvidialist2.txt jovando@192.168.0.105:/home/jovando
17:25 jovando what does scp command means?
17:25 melodie copy through ssh tunnel
17:26 melodie s for ssh
17:26 melodie cp for copy
17:26 jovando ok
17:26 melodie try to type in your console "man ssh" and look at the description at the beginning of the man
17:26 melodie then type "q" (without quotes) to quit the man
17:32 jovando ok, one moment - i typed the output of scp command: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6433048/
17:32 melodie type yes
17:32 melodie and press enter
17:35 jovando http://paste.ubuntu.com/6433068/
17:36 jovando ok, just for info - i am at just at 18:25
17:36 jovando so i do this now: dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia | awk '{print $2}' > nvidialist2.txt ?
17:37 jovando do you just need the nvidialist2.txt or also nvidialist.txt=
17:37 jovando ?
17:38 melodie why not both?
17:38 jovando ok
17:38 melodie I just don't know yet why the scp fails
17:38 melodie thinking...
17:39 jovando do i maybe have to open it from 192.168.0.105?
17:39 melodie do you have openssh-server and openssh-client installed in the machine where the problem is? If unsure would you try installing them?
17:39 melodie well the file being in the machine which fails you need to send them somewhere else
17:39 melodie in one way or another
17:41 jovando openssh-server and client are already the newest version
17:41 melodie reboot both systems one after the other and retry
17:41 melodie it might fix it
17:41 jovando ok
17:41 jovando see you in 1 min
17:42 melodie ok
17:45 jovando joined #linuxvillage
17:46 melodie you retry?
17:46 jovando melodie: hello
17:46 jovando rebooted
17:46 melodie yes I guess so
17:46 jovando have some ubuntu errors now
17:47 melodie while doing what?
17:48 jovando after the restart
17:48 jovando http://imagebin.org/277558
17:49 jovando error over error - i dont know but since i use linux i always see just errors :-(
17:49 melodie you can safely ignore it, because apport is buggy and thinks anything which was stopped by the user or still there before rebooting crashed
17:50 melodie well you have to learn more before thinking it's all the same
17:50 jovando ok, i will retry to start ssh server and sc
17:50 jovando scp
17:50 melodie some errors come from you because you don't always understand what you do, and some come from some of the programs. I have just not delivered apport and apport-gtk in Bento Ubuntu Remix and this way I am tranquile
17:51 jovando ssh runs
17:51 jovando yeah, you are a hero
17:52 jovando it worked
17:52 melodie lol
17:52 melodie just experiences and stubborn enough not to give up
17:52 jovando just needed to type in the password
17:52 melodie yes of course
17:54 jovando http://paste.ubuntu.com/6433185/
17:56 melodie good!
17:57 melodie Now I'll browse the ubuntu-fr.org wiki and see how we can use this list to remove them all with one command (make a script that you can scp from your working machine to the broken system)
17:58 jovando do you need the nvidialist2.txt too?
17:59 jovando nvidialist2: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6433202/
18:00 coyotus joined #linuxvillage

18:01 Seditio <jovando> error over error - i dont know but since i use linux i always see just errors :-(
18:02 Seditio no, no, no
18:02 Seditio that's just ubuntu
18:02 melodie Seditio please don't start
18:02 Seditio :3
18:02 jovando :-)
18:02 Seditio I didn't say anything
18:02 melodie Seditio my ubuntu spins work perfect, except if the user breaks it, so should it be with his spin
18:03 melodie Seditio you'd better! ;)
18:03 melodie jovando let's try something
18:03 Seditio I'm only saying this because the default ubuntu ISOs, i've tried them, ever since 12.10, they crash by themselves, you just install, run it, leave it idle for 5 mins
18:03 Seditio ubuntu has detected an error
18:04 Seditio also melodie, do you know any command-line music players apart from mpd?
18:04 melodie mpd is just a server
18:04 Seditio mpd/mpc combo I mean
18:04 melodie I don't, ask coyotus
18:05 melodie may he does?
18:05 jovando melodie: how long do you deal with linux now?
18:05 coyotus moc
18:06 jovando i mean at all? since year ...
18:06 Seditio [download]  13.1% of 28.60MiB at 103.74KiB/s ETA 04:05
18:06 Seditio this is slow
18:06 Seditio for a 1gbit server..
18:06 melodie jovando since 2004
18:07 jovando melodie: ok, and where do you visit linux courses?
18:08 melodie I don't, I learn here and there
18:08 Seditio in 2004 I was 9 and not interested in computers at all :L
18:08 melodie jovando let's work on your issue, stick here, and when the issue is solved I'll point you to a few pages
18:09 jovando ok :-)
18:11 melodie jovando can you get the contents of the logs in the broken system, just after you reboot in a way such that you try to get the X session working?
18:12 melodie then get the content of /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log in a way which will allow having the full content of them into a pastebin? You could use http://pastebin.fr to do that if you get them files in your working machine
18:12 coyotus je te fait ça vite melodie
18:12 melodie merci coyotus
18:14 Mo0O salut tlm
18:14 Mo0O io melodie
18:14 Mo0O j'ai pas eu de news pour le moment ;)
18:14 Mo0O sorry
18:15 melodie jovando please get the logs? and also /var/log/messages
18:16 coyotus melodie http://pastebin.com/KQCdmVVx
18:18 melodie jovando coyotus just did a script for you
18:18 melodie are you here?
18:18 melodie http://pastebin.com/KQCdmVVx
18:18 melodie you must copy the part which is in the lower field to a text file, make it executable, place it into your remove not working system and execute it
18:19 melodie ie you name it "remove.sh"
18:19 melodie and type ./remove.sh
18:19 coyotus chmod +x remove.sh
18:19 jovando yes i am here
18:19 melodie ready?
18:20 melodie jovando continue here please: <melodie> jovando can you get the contents of the logs in the broken system,
18:20 melodie ...
18:22 jovando jep i will work now on that
18:22 jovando is the "done" in the end also part of the script?
18:23 melodie oh yes
18:24 melodie jovando the logs are important to have even before you use the script
18:24 melodie I am trying since yesterday to get them from you do you fancy?
18:24 coyotus package=$(cat paquet)
18:25 melodie coyotus pas la peine de complexifier...
18:25 melodie :)
18:25 melodie ah
18:26 jovando aja, and what does ie mean?
18:26 melodie jovando do that:
18:27 coyotus mais alors je pense que une boucle while serai plus approprié
18:27 melodie get the content of /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log in a way which will allow having the full content of them into a pastebin? You could use http://pastebin.fr to do that if you get them files in your working machine and also /var/log/messages
18:27 melodie coyotus ok
18:29 jovando is this really good? ./remove.sh
18:30 coyotus say me the answer of the command jovando
18:30 jovando because i will run it with this command - i think it should first run at the broken machine, shouldn't it?
18:31 jovando command not found
18:33 melodie it must run at the broken machine
18:33 melodie and you must make it executable as per coyotus has told you
18:33 melodie <coyotus> chmod +x remove.sh
18:33 melodie so make it executable first, then scp the file to the broken machine
18:34 melodie just when you do scp you will type the ip adress of the broken machine instead
18:34 jovando i have made it executeable now
18:35 jovando ip of broken machine is: 192.168.0.104
18:35 melodie the aim is to uninstall all the nvidia drivers in one shot, however DO YOU THINK you can FIRST get the LOG FILES I have asked you about 10 times now?
18:35 melodie FIRST, PRIOR ?

18:38 jovando do i have to intall ssh server and client at the broken system too?
18:38 melodie you have done it already

18:39 melodie ah !
18:39 melodie good
18:40 melodie and also do start the ssh service on the broken one
18:40 melodie sudo service ssh start
18:40 melodie or sudo start ssh service
18:40 melodie not sure
18:41 melodie it is "sudo start ssh"
18:41 melodie I just checked
18:41 coyotus u must open the port 22 for autorize ssh protocol
18:41 melodie coyotus it should not be necessary
18:41 coyotus sudo service ssh start
18:42 jovando ok, so i do that before log files ... ?
18:42 jovando sudo start ssh
18:42 melodie coyotus it has worked the other way around
18:42 jovando dont works
18:42 jovando tried all commands... :-(
18:42 melodie try as coyotus said
18:42 melodie ok so reinstall
18:42 melodie sudo apt-get install --reinstall openssh-client openssh-server
18:43 melodie when you told me it was installed you might have messed up
18:43 melodie send the log files please
18:43 melodie so we can start look into them
18:43 melodie send the log files please
18:43 melodie so we can start look into them

18:44 jovando just om: sudo apt-get install --reinstall openssh-client openssh-server  - works
18:44 jovando 2 new installed
18:44 melodie do that, and I'll be back in a few minutes
18:44 melodie good :)
18:44 jovando so, now the log files
18:44 melodie good :)
18:44 coyotus sinon simplement ssh user@IP
18:48 melodie I'll be back in one hour, in the meanwhile jovando just send the logs please
18:48 melodie and use the script done by coyotus if you can
18:48 melodie merci coyotus
18:51 jovando jep i have all logs except of messages
18:52 jovando it seems that messages is not in /var/log
18:53 jovando ls does show me more than i can see
18:53 jovando can i filter the ls search?
18:54 jovando dmesq: http://pastebin.fr/31678
18:55 jovando Xorg.0.log: http://pastebin.fr/31679
18:58 jovando how can i see the hole output of ls? (because i think it is cut)
19:00 jovando i will go for something to eat in the meanwhile, because i didnt eat anything the hole day....
19:06 jovando ok, i found out how to have a look for all files in the directory
19:10 jovando but unfortunatelly "messages" is not displayed
19:18 jovando melodie: i am back in 30 min
19:29 melodie jovando you can search with "ls /var/log/messages"
19:29 melodie or
19:29 melodie jovando you can search with "ls /var/log/message*"
19:32 melodie jovando the dmesg seems ok but the Xorg.0.log is not complete you MUST use scp to send it to your main machine and copy it entirely to a pastebin
19:46 melodie jovando also let us know if you have invoked coyotus's script to remove all the nvidia packages
20:05 alphad joined #linuxvillage
20:08 jovando hi
20:08 alphad bonsoir
20:10 jovando ok, so i dont have to wait for your check of log-files?
20:11 jovando i first try again to scp the log file Xorg.0.log to the working machine
20:17 jovando i checked the Xorg.0.log file with "nano Xorg.0.log" - the file is as long as i posted
20:18 jovando there is also a Xorg.0.log - which is not even longer as the normal Xorg.0.log
20:20 jovando i carry on with coyotus's script now
20:23 melodie jovando no need I have already checked
20:23 melodie you carry on the the script which will remove all nvidia drivers
20:24 melodie then you will do:
20:24 melodie sudo apt-get install --reinstall xorg-xserver-video-nouveau nouveau-firmware
20:26 jovando ok
20:30 jovando broken machine means: E: Unable to locate package xorg-xserver-video-nouceau
20:30 NoNa joined #linuxvillage
20:31 jovando nouveaz of course
20:31 jovando ah, nouveau
20:32 melodie jovando you can connect to broken machine with ssh now
20:32 melodie from within the working machine
20:32 melodie in the console as simple user do:
20:33 yzeew joined #linuxvillage
20:33 melodie ssh jovando@192.168.0.104
20:34 melodie it will prompt you for the password of the broken machine, then once done you are logged to it from within the console, so you can copy/paste the commands I provided, directly into the console
20:34 yzeew bonsoir melodie ; bonsoir all
20:34 melodie salut yzeew
20:34 melodie jovando do you understand the advantage of doing so?
20:36 jovando moment .. thinking
20:37 jovando i think i understand
20:38 jovando so in the console of working machine i type: ssh jovando@192.168.0.104 first?
20:39 jovando you know: working machine: user=jovando    ip=192.168.0.105
20:41 jovando broken machine: user=pion        ip:192.168.0.104
20:42 jovando is the command on working machine right so: ssh jovando@192.168.0.104
20:42 jovando ?
20:46 Biaise joined #linuxvillage
20:46 melodie jovando then
20:46 melodie ssh pion@192.168.0.104
20:47 melodie ssh will log you into the remote machine with your user name for that remote machine
20:47 melodie tell me once done please
20:48 melodie jovando ?
20:49 jovando jep
20:49 melodie just read please :)
20:49 jovando yes
20:50 jovando melodie: ok, i am in the broken machine
20:51 melodie what is the hostname of that machine? It might be easier for me to name it
20:52 melodie jovando ?
20:52 jovando jep
20:52 melodie what is the hostname of that machine? It might be easier for me to name it
20:52 jovando hostname of broken machine?
20:52 melodie yes
20:52 jovando pion@pioncell:~$
20:52 melodie so pioncell is it's name
20:52 jovando ok
20:52 melodie pion is the user name
20:53 melodie now in pioncell paste:
20:53 melodie sudo apt-get install --reinstall xorg-xserver-video-nouveau nouveau-firmware
20:53 jovando pioncell the hostname?
20:53 melodie yes sir
20:54 jovando http://pastebin.fr/31686
20:55 melodie jovando wait a sec, I check the package name
20:55 melodie aha

20:56 jovando ok
20:56 melodie my bad
20:57 jovando worked: http://pastebin.fr/31687
20:58 melodie this is to be considered: "WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated!"
20:58 melodie it might mean you don't have the right authentication key in the system

21:01 melodie melodie> this is to be considered: "WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated!"  // from your last pastebin
21:01 melodie something about a missing key?
21:02 melodie jovando ?
21:02 melodie I am waiting for you and have more to say after, about the kernels of your's in pioncell
21:02 jovando yes, i have a number of special messages: http://pastebin.fr/31688
21:05 melodie there are two repos which are not valide
21:05 melodie Something wicked happened resolving 'packages.medibuntu.org:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)
21:06 melodie of course, it's stopped, so you should remove it and replace it with another one
21:06 melodie I can give you the info
21:06 melodie later
21:06 melodie the other one should not return 404 as it is the repos of your specific version of an ubuntu remix
21:06 jovando ok, thx
21:07 lastrodamo bonsoir melodie

21:09 melodie jovando "W: Failed to fetch http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/dists/precise/Release  Unable to find expected entry 'contrib/source/Sources' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)"
21:09 melodie this is not needed in a 12.04, there is a version of Virtualbox which works perfectly well
21:10 melodie jovando this is bad new for you:
21:11 jovando bad news?
21:11 melodie W: Failed to fetch http://packages.netrunner-os.com/dists/dryland-se/main/binary-i386/Packages  404  Not Found
21:12 melodie I have cut the end of the link until I get somewhere and the repos has changed name from "dryland-se" to "enigma-1306" and to be sure about what it means I've gone to the home page of the distribution:
21:12 melodie http://www.netrunner-os.com/
21:12 melodie your version is not a LTS, although it was built on the basis of a LTS
21:12 melodie you can't count with them anymore
21:13 melodie unless you get the next version, or upgrade (which might also break your system just a little more)
21:13 melodie anyhow
21:13 melodie you don't have an authentication issue
21:14 melodie jovando if you agree with that I will make you get a full list of the packages you have installed and keep it safe, would you like that?
21:14 jovando yes please
21:14 melodie ok, I'll go fetch the info in the French Ubuntu wiki
21:15 melodie and the other thing you should know is that you haven't removed the list of kernels and kernel-headers installed, maybe you have removed the list from Grub, but nothing more
21:16 melodie jovando you have provided that list to me here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6433185/plain/
21:17 jovando really? but i was sure that 3,509 MB space has been freed at this action
21:21 jovando yes, this was the list of the nvidia log file, wasn't it?

21:25 melodie jovando yes really
21:26 alphad joined #linuxvillage
21:28 jovando ok, and the update URL has changed...?
21:29 melodie if you upgrade from 12.04 to 13.06 or so, your system may break completely
21:29 melodie or not
21:29 melodie let's remove the kernels you don't need. Please first in the console of pioncell type:
21:29 melodie uname -rv
21:29 melodie give me the result here
21:31 melodie jovando ?
21:31 melodie please try to be faster
21:31 melodie there are still a few things to do before checking if the system is repaired
21:31 jovando uname -rv: 3.2.0-56-generic #86-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 23 17:31:43 UTC 2013
21:32 jovando ok
21:33 melodie now type this:
21:33 melodie sudo apt-get install aptitude
21:33 melodie let me know once done
21:33 melodie just say "done" when finished
21:35 jovando done
21:35 jovando already installed
21:35 melodie now do:
21:36 melodie aptitude search '~i linux-image-3.2.0-'> linux-image-list.txt
21:36 Munto joined #linuxvillage
21:36 melodie tell me when done
21:37 jovando done - no output
21:37 melodie did you see the > linux-image-list.txt ? this is the output
21:37 jovando oh, save by .txt you need it
21:37 melodie wait
21:37 melodie one more:
21:37 jovando ok, one mom
21:38 melodie aptitude search '~i linux-header-3.2.0-' > linux-header-list.txt
21:38 melodie yes, just say when done
21:40 jovando linux-header-list.txt : i   linux-image-3.2.0-56-generic    - Linux kernel image for version 3.2.0 on 32
21:41 jovando (i must add that usually i had the pae kernel of that
21:42 jovando but i am very glad if it works normally
21:44 melodie if you have a pae capable cpu you should install a pae kernel
21:44 melodie well
21:44 jovando ok, so...
21:44 melodie we will see that next
21:44 melodie first things first
21:44 jovando ok
21:44 melodie now:
21:45 melodie do you have a file having for name linux-image-list.txt and one linux-header-list.txt ? If yes, from within the ssh you scp the two files in your machine that works
21:46 melodie scp linux-image-list.txt linux-header-list.txt jovando@192.168.0.105:/home/jovando
21:46 jovando ok, how can i find this txt files on my broken system=
21:46 melodie jovando is that OK ?
21:46 jovando ?
21:47 melodie it is in the same directory as where you have typed "aptitude search '~i linux-header-3.2.0-' > linux-header-list.txt "
21:47 jovando clear, but i have to search the txt files
21:47 melodie and "aptitude search '~i linux-image-3.2.0-'> linux-image-list.txt"
21:47 melodie well well
21:48 melodie why would you search it? You are located in the directory where you created them, from the point of view of the console where you are logged in
21:48 melodie if you type:
21:48 melodie pwd
21:48 jovando sry, there is just our linux-image.txt file
21:48 melodie in pion@pioncell type as simple user:
21:49 melodie aptitude search '~i linux-image-3.2.0-' > linux-image-list.txt
21:49 melodie then
21:49 jovando done
21:49 melodie aptitude search '~i linux-header-3.2.0-' > linux-header-list.txt
21:49 melodie now you should have two new files
21:49 jovando done
21:50 jovando i bring you the files, one moment
21:51 melodie ok
21:54 jovando linux-image-list.txt: http://pastebin.fr/31689
21:55 jovando the linux-header-list.txt: is empty
21:55 melodie and the other one?
21:55 melodie try this then:
21:55 melodie (I have mistaken)
21:57 melodie aptitude search '~i linux-headers-3.2.0-' > linux-header-list.txt
21:57 melodie there was a 's' missing
22:00 jovando http://paste.ubuntu.com/6434473/
22:01 melodie ok, now one more, "for the road"
22:01 jovando :-)
22:02 melodie dpkg -l | grep -i linux-headers | awk '{print $2}' > linux-headers-full-list.txt
