21:24 eagles0513875 hey melodie :D
21:24 eagles0513875 what do you need me to help with
21:24 melodie welcome eagles0513875 !
21:24 melodie well, first let me voice you
21:25 melodie done
21:25 melodie now this is what we need:
21:25 melodie a control center for the openbox environment
21:25 melodie I can show you a project which started back in 2013 and was discontinued, (with gtk3 and lua)
21:25 melodie and I can show you sort of a list of specs for the project
21:27 eagles0513875 ok
21:27 eagles0513875 right now problem for me is time
21:27 melodie then do you know the Slitaz distribution? Built on Openbox, it is/was one of the lightest out there, and having their own basis (not build on other projects) and not really stable unfortunately, when I tried it, several times, until their version 4.0 back a pair of years ago
21:27 melodie as for everybody, right?
21:27 eagles0513875 no
21:27 eagles0513875 im stuck on kde on gentoo
21:27 eagles0513875 willing to try a different desktop or WM
21:27 eagles0513875 but distro im stuck with gentoo for sure :)
21:27 melodie but starting to talk about projets is time taken, to foresee projects
21:27 eagles0513875 agreed
21:28 melodie and the openbox control center is a project which does need to take the time the right way, it should not be done in a hurry or without thinking it well
21:30 eagles0513875 melodie: it will be a very steep learning curve for me
21:30 eagles0513875 as I have to learn c/c++ and lua and gtk3
21:32 melodie do you have to learn all that?
21:32 melodie I just thought that for a start, someone knowing html and css3 could do a great job : Slitaz did it, why not use their method?
21:32 melodie at least for a first tool
21:33 melodie should I show you the file with the specs?
21:34 melodie eagles0513875 you can find the file here:
21:34 melodie http://meets.free.fr/Downloads/BentoVillageProject/OpenboxControlCenter/A_gui_to_configure_an_Openbox_branded_desktop.odt
21:34 melodie you can also follow part of what happens on the bento-dev mailing list, also hosted on one of phillw's servers (one managed by Jason)
21:35 melodie http://www.bentovillage.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/bento-dev
21:35 eagles0513875 kool welll ill have to do it tomorrow
21:35 eagles0513875 as im drained
21:36 melodie :)
21:36 melodie so am I, in fact
21:36 melodie if I could, I would offer you a herb tea, or a glass of good organic wine from my area :)
21:38 melodie eagles0513875 my wish for an openbox control center is that it would be easy for anyone to configure everything without having to fetch some unknown files in the .config/* and such, and have nice big icons in it to click on: I am aware that it can be done with html and css
21:38 melodie eagles0513875 is that right?
21:38 eagles0513875 is this going to be web based?
21:38 eagles0513875 if not i would go for a lower level language like python or even c/c++
21:38 melodie and my big wish, is that this gui would be desktop agnostic, which html and css are
21:39 eagles0513875 php html and css
21:39 eagles0513875 what exactly does the above mentioned do
21:39 eagles0513875 i woudl advise against web though
21:40 eagles0513875 as you would probably need a web server dependency for the application even to run on local host
21:40 melodie well, if you want to code in C you are welcome to do so, but I have read (pcman say in his posts on the lxde mailing list), that coding in pure C is very much prone to error. Then he switched to VALA that could produce C afterwards. what do you think?
21:40 melodie you might be right
21:40 eagles0513875 one perk with c/c++ is performance
21:40 eagles0513875 look at enlightenment
21:40 eagles0513875 plus
21:40 eagles0513875 melodie:
21:40 eagles0513875 everything is prone to errors regardless of the language
21:41 eagles0513875 another language we coudl use is the mono.net framework
21:41 melodie all I know is Slitaz used to be 36 MB large and be able to run one tab of Firefox in a P1 :D
21:41 eagles0513875 f
21:41 eagles0513875 another language we coudl use is the mono.net framework
21:41 eagles0513875 thats platform agnostic and will allow cross compilation for even windows and mac
21:41 melodie well the end result should still be light enough not to make the system more greedy that it is originally (83 to 130 MB ram, depending on the machines)
21:42 melodie Windows does not need Openbox
21:43 melodie and I don't know the future of Bento yet, it all depends how I can dive into darkxst's advice for seeds and for creating packages (time runs too for me)
21:43 melodie so I don't know if it can go beyond i686 and x86_64 platforms yet, nor when
21:46 melodie eagles0513875 as soon as you wish to look at it, and see what time you can give to it, let me know
21:46 melodie I should also show you the former project, as you don't seem shy when it comes to coding
21:46 melodie so that's mimas's work:
21:47 melodie https://bitbucket.org/fabriceT/control-center
21:47 melodie and there is a pic of it working in Lubuntu:
