18:38 frost_ hi
18:38 melodie hi frost_
18:38 melodie so you want to dualboot windows 7 and linux?
18:39 melodie explain what steps you have taken : did you downlaod a linux distribution?
18:39 frost_ I got win7 and debian. Dual boot. Not I decided to reinstall debian. I didn't installed grub and now i cannot access linux. Everyone on #linux tells me, to install grub in mbr, but, i did it two years ago and it overwrites my mbr
18:39 frost_ not i don't have win7 cd (i'm not at home), so i dont wanna risk, losing windows access
18:40 frost_ *now i dont
18:40 melodie sure, so what you do first is a full backup of the Windows partitions and MBR using Clonezilla : in Live mode only that's to day
18:40 melodie to say
18:40 frost_ i wont be accessing windows partition
18:40 frost_ i'll overwrite partitions, which i used before for old-debian
18:40 melodie what I usually do, is I use the network to do that
18:41 melodie if you are in Live Clonezilla it will access Windows partitions and allow you to save them as partitions
18:41 melodie that's a disc image, think of it as Acronis
18:41 melodie or you can use Acronis if you are already used to it
18:42 melodie Clonezilla can let you use another remote machine on the LAN to copy the partitions (bit to bit copy, it's long but safe)
18:42 frost_ ok, let's say i'll risk without backup. What could go wrong? I could only overwite mrb
18:42 melodie and it will look for a remote ext3 or ext4 partition I think (not sure, I used it only with one of the methods)
18:43 melodie well, are you even sure the bootloader of 7 is in the MBR ?
18:43 frost_ yup, it is
18:43 melodie if you want to be sure, you backup your partitions, it's not really difficult to do, it just needs your focus to what is written
18:43 frost_ i'm sure it's in mbr
18:44 melodie and you need an external media, it can be an external hard drive
18:44 melodie well, what can go wrong is that you may have to repair Windows boot, from within Grub2
18:44 melodie there are some Debian users here, not sure they are really here right now
18:45 melodie captnfab ? are you here?
18:45 melodie frost_ have you downloaded the very latest Debian Jessie?
18:45 frost_ yup
18:45 frost_ i've already installed it, but cannot access it, as i screwed with grub installation
18:46 melodie frost_ something else, if it's a laptop, is the battery on, fully loaded and do you have a save power grid, no storms coming around or so?
18:46 melodie what can you access? Debian or Windows?
18:46 frost_ windows
18:46 melodie with Debian installed besides? Is that right?
18:47 melodie then you will need to boot a live cd and reinstall Grub2
18:47 melodie I can get a few command lines for you to do that
18:47 frost_ should I overwite mbr?
18:47 frost_ with grub2?
18:48 melodie yes, using command lines preferably
18:48 melodie however there might be several solutions
18:48 melodie such as having a partition for the boot
18:48 frost_ it detects my win7 as vista
18:48 melodie but you need something to boot both
18:48 frost_ what if i wont be able to boot windows?
18:48 melodie this does not matter
18:49 frost_ it did matter last time, when i did that two years ago, i wasnt able to access windwos
18:49 melodie what if you make it simple and install EasyBCD in Windows, start it and let it take care of both systems?
18:49 melodie not free (but no cost) and efficient
18:49 frost_ i'm using it right now
18:49 frost_ easybcd points me to grub2
18:49 frost_ which is empty
18:50 melodie http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/
18:50 frost_ yup, got it
18:50 melodie does it show anything else?
18:50 frost_ just grub menu
18:51 frost_ then kernel panic, while starting kernel
18:51 frost_ but wait
18:51 melodie oh bad
18:51 frost_ let's say i'll install grub on mbr
18:51 melodie how did you download the iso of the linux distro?
18:51 frost_ it will overwrite mbr, yes/no ?
18:51 melodie did you download it the right way?
18:51 melodie frost_ yes, it has to overwrite the mbr
18:51 frost_ then how would i access windows, to install easybcd?
18:52 frost_ hmm, ahh, i can use it from linux
18:52 melodie but I could also suspect another issue that comes before: if you didn't download debian the right way
18:52 melodie easybcd : not under linux
18:52 melodie it installs in Windows
18:52 frost_ then, how to access easybcd?
18:52 melodie Grub2 works in Linux
18:52 frost_ if grub2 will fail windows
18:53 melodie you don't access EasyBCD you configure it in Windows and it takes care of everything
18:53 frost_ ...
18:53 frost_ but mbr is overwritten by grub
18:53 melodie please tell me that you dowloaded it right and checked the md5sum of the iso file ? before any further question?
18:53 melodie "but mbr is overwritten" yes, if you let the system install the boot loader
18:54 frost_ then how to access easybcd?
18:54 melodie if you don't let the installer of your new linux install the bootloader you can use EasyBCD
18:54 melodie let's sum up, ok?
18:54 frost_ you install grub2 -> it overwrites MBR -> grub fails to load windows -> how you access easybcd on windows?
18:54 melodie you have Windows and Linux now, but the Grub2 is not installed right
18:55 frost_ grub is installed on the same HD as kernel
18:55 melodie >  how you access easybcd on windows?  || you don't. You are stuck
18:55 melodie or you can use a Live CD Windows but then I don't know how you use it to repair the Windows bootloader
18:56 frost_ sorry, this channell is waste of time :( - you just offtopic (about battery level and md5, while it's not real problem). Anyway, thx for trying to help!
18:56 frost_ left #linuxvillage
18:56 melodie > grub is installed on the same HD as kernel || how did you do thias install?
20:31 melodie I'm listening to Sting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI8toRERrG0
