00:01 jeffreykegler1 re multiple passes.  These days production compilers like GCC are unapologetically multiple pass.  Long ago, when tradeoffs were different, so that every compiler pass probably meant a full series of physical reads from the very slow disks of the time ...
00:04 jeffreykegler1 So some single pass compilers came out.  Even under those very advantageous conditions, their record IIRC was disappointing -- wrapping everything into one pass greatly complicated the logic and the speedup was non-existent or disappointing.
00:07 jeffreykegler1 Basically, if you have a tradeoff: adding an extra pass, versus anything else of significance, then my experience, and I believe that of the industry, is that the percentage play is usually adding the extra pass.
