16:27 jeffreykegler Working on a Google group question from Steven Haryanto (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/marpa-parser/qNb8eSs-JzU) early this morning I stumbled onto what I think is a very nice technique.
16:30 jeffreykegler Steven wanted to do an unanchored search using Marpa's SLIF.
16:33 jeffreykegler The technique I stumbled onto uses the discard mechanism -- it treats characters that are not part of the search pattern as whitespace.  The search patterns are then defined as lexemes.  It's easy to set the SLIF up so that search patterns are always preferred over the non-search-pattern characters.
16:35 jeffreykegler This means you could write an ack-like or grep-like tool that searches for pattern too complex to specify as regular expressions --
16:36 jeffreykegler certain kinds of language constructs for example, or
16:37 jeffreykegler constructs which are nested.
16:38 jeffreykegler Note that some regex engines will do nested constructs, but regular expressions easily go quadratic on these, and Marpa does not.
19:28 Aria Oh that is delightful.
