04:11 hardmath123 Hey
05:13 jeffreykegler joined #marpa
05:14 jeffreykegler https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libmarpa-r2-perl/2.086000~dfsg-1
05:14 jeffreykegler If that link says what I think it does, the Debian folks work fast.
05:15 jeffreykegler Fedora did a Marpa release, but they're still on Marpa::XS.

05:18 jeffreykegler Marpa::R2 2.086000 is just over a week old, and already it's out on Ubuntu
05:18 hardmath123 Hey, jeffreykegler
05:18 jeffreykegler Hi
05:18 hardmath123 Just wanted to stop by
05:18 hardmath123 I ended up submitting a link to nearley
05:19 jeffreykegler "submitting" to whom?
05:19 jeffreykegler As your class project, you mean?
05:19 hardmath123 yeah
05:19 jeffreykegler OK, I'd wondered how that went.
05:20 hardmath123 I ended up with an A+
05:20 hardmath123 so clearly well
05:20 jeffreykegler Well, you certainly worked hard at it.
05:21 hardmath123 That's true
05:21 jeffreykegler I think all the other people looking at Marpa in academic settings are in graduate school.
05:21 jeffreykegler Or post-doc.
05:21 hardmath123 I do have a habit of forgetting about projects after the initial excitement, though.
05:21 jeffreykegler Don't we all
05:22 hardmath123 Well, you've stuck with Marpa for a while
05:22 jeffreykegler Yes, but my case is different
05:23 hardmath123 Oh
05:23 jeffreykegler For most people that's how it works -- they'll be enthusiastic, they'll do a lot, and then stuff like real life will get more interesting, so they'll take a break.
05:23 jeffreykegler Which is fine, because I hope they'll be back with lots of new ideas and energy
05:24 hardmath123 Well, the thing is, you start a project with the hope and optimizism of finally doing it right this time
05:24 hardmath123 by the third hour, you can't understand your own code
05:24 hardmath123 then you give up and go find another idea
05:25 hardmath123 *optimism
05:25 jeffreykegler The great benefit of old age is lowered expectations :-)
05:25 hardmath123 Waitwaitwait aren't you people expected to be mature?
05:27 jeffreykegler In particular, I think more in terms of "one step better it
05:27 jeffreykegler 's been done before"
05:27 jeffreykegler As opposed to "right" or "perfect".
05:27 hardmath123 Ah. That's oddly motivating.
05:29 jeffreykegler A lot of what I try to do is encourage people to take Marpa and go one step further in some direction ...
05:30 jeffreykegler even if that's means outdoing something I've done.
05:30 jeffreykegler I might even say *especially* if it means outdoing something I've already done.
05:33 hardmath123 Ah
05:34 hardmath123 I dunno. I feel at the moment, a lot of hackers (me included) seem to have a psychology where we spend disproportionate amounts of time as compared to the usefulness of code. I spent the last 2 hours aligning a single image on my blog perfectly.
05:34 hardmath123 (darn CSS margins!)
05:35 jeffreykegler I get into the same thing myself, aligning TeX equations, when I'm thinking I should be letting them be messy and just get the math right first.
05:35 jeffreykegler But I also have the theory that you have to give the right (left?) brain equal time.
05:42 hardmath123 Hmm. Is right (or left) brain the same thing as OCD?
05:44 jeffreykegler I was thinking about the supposed different between left and right brain thinking, where one is literal/logical and the other is more imaginative/holistic.  I'm told brain scientists believe that's actually nonsense, but it's survived as an popular expression.
05:50 hardmath123 True
05:50 hardmath123 That sounds frighteningly close to what people actually in charge of education say, though.
05:52 jeffreykegler hardmath123: what time zone are you in, by the way?
05:56 hardmath123 PST
05:57 hardmath123 It's 11 now. I'm supposed to sleep an hour ago.
05:57 hardmath123 But I just pushed the new version of my blog to the server, which was worth the hour.
05:59 jeffreykegler I'm also PST and it's time for me to sign off.
05:59 jeffreykegler bye
05:59 hardmath123 Bye!
